Not too many spectators over the weekend (& most of those in driver's suits.........). They don't know what they missed...........

PS a two day 2 for 1 ticket cost me £15 which equates to £3.75p per person per day. That's a gift if you ask me! :)

It's incredibly reasonably priced. I always preferred watching historics to modern cars when I was younger. I wish there was something that could be done to bring the spectators in. They just need to be convinced.

We went on Sunday and had a great day out - between my wife and myself we took over 500 photos. It was nice to be able to just wander about and talk to all and sundrry.

Last night's BBC4 documentary prompted me to post this pic of Ben Eastwick's evocative 1955 D-Type Jaguar from the weekend. Appearances by D-Types are becoming increasingly rare these days as their value precludes them from being raced, it seems?

great photo's by all. In one pit there was a Cobra with large rear wheel arches (I use the term loosely as they were not subtle ones!). The car looked stunning (although also brand new and modsports) It was black with blue tinted rear window. I presume it was due to be in Flav's race but it didnt start - in fact it was being loaded onto the truck as the race started. Did it fail scrutineering or did it break?
The reason Ben is so happy to use his is because its a continuation car built around an original engine (from memory) - I think he is quite open about it. In the old days he ran it in an invitation class in the BRDC Historic Sportscar Championship as it didn't have FIA papers but that of course changed with HTP papers. I stand to be corrected if I am wrong

When I was younger they weren't historic !

Didn't spot your elusive Cobra Simon, but the two that didn't race or run in qualifying from the five Cobras entered were the Darren Turner / Ludovic Caron car from France and the Gary Pearson / Carlos Monteverde example, so it will have been one of these two.

Meanwhile, Simon Hadfield cracks a beer as we bid farewell to the fabulous Lotus 48, hopefully not for another 11 years.

And as it was not an event for new cars, that is possibly why you saw the French Cobra being loaded onto a truck, Simon?

Those Jags at front were very, very quick, very, very new and they are British! 2 10 in an E Type-must be very good drivers?Hang on they are Historic Drivers so can't be that good. It's called development which is crazy when you consider it's called Historic Racing which I supposed is a reenactment of what happened in period.Don't think so.

Agreed , however i can understand that the rubber used for even period tyres would be of better quality then in period, but as you say it is supposed to be recreation of the way things were .

As an example tuning carbs today i assume they can use the electronic devices like Crypton tuners, but in period i would have done it using a piece of rubber hose and my ears to hear the suction . that gives away how old i really am lol.

Tony-Thats what the customers want. The customers are the entrants. Its called development but will lead nowhere apart from less and less people will be prepared to pay for this stuff.2 10 for a Jag E type when the better drivers were a bit slower in E types. The cars are legal these days in HTP terms but do they have any direct resemblance to Oulton and BUY 1 ,I doubt it apart from looks. That little thing that was biting their heals for the first few laps must have got their attention and made them think if the winter expenditure was worth it.
It will be a long term problem in Historic Racing and the only saviour are the race organisers who can legislate what cars they accept.

Unfortunately only the Goodwoods ,Monaco,Le Mans can do this with oversubscribed entry lists can do this and do manage it up to a point but you cannot expect the other organisers to act as referees when they need full grids to make a living.

John Flav's race was heavily oversubscribed as was Guards so they were in the position to make a stand. Tony we clearly have similiar taste - I thought that Husky Van was delightful!

Of all the organisers I would have thought that Flav /Ness series will take stock of what happened at Silverstone and sort the grids for the remaining three races although its a bit late for Monza. Some of the quicker cars had only just come out from winter build so speed was unknown. The Harrington will not go again as I made a mistake putting it in that race but feel that a class structure should be sorted so you see Porsche 356,Elites,Turners as well as big guns.E Types quicker than Cobras,904's and would have been quicker than GT 40's if they had been let in.
Pre 63 should be a much more historic type event.
Is Historic Motor Racing a subject TNF should involve itself in,I doubt it Tony.Only actual Historic cars that race and there are precious few of those.

sorry I mean Anglia van - I am sure there was also a Husky van as well. I presume the Jaguar Mark VII tow car was a Webb support vehicle? Next to it was the most immaculate Mk2 3.4 - it really looked like a new car.

Can someone tell me more about the HWM-Jaguar #48 (or 148), reg VPA9? The body style at the front looks not dissimilar to the blue HWM-Jag GT here, and not at all as it looked in the '50s when Tony Gaze drove it, as in DCN's book 'Powered by Jaguar', when it looked more like Milligan's XPA748.

- I am sure there was also a Husky van as well.

The original Husky had the Minx 1390cc motor, as did the Commer Cob van, and the later version was a derivative based on the Imp van. The floorpan of the original Husky, of course, as everyone knows, was the basis of the Sunbeam Tiger.
BTW any more info on the de Tomaso?
The Corvette may be a replica, but there were some special versions in period, I will need to check details, and, from memory, some more very special versions, Mako Shark, SS incl supercharged engines in the very late 50s and early 60s, something of a pet project for Zora Arkus Duntov IIRC. You might like to check it out. I recall them from The Autocar in period.

On Saturday directly behind the pit garages about halfway down was a sleek metallic light grey coupe possibly late 60's / early 70's. It looked a bit like a grifo but with squarer bodywork which had lots of rivets visible - anybody know what it was?

Thanks - have to wait till I get home to see the picture as Imageshack blocked at work!

Is it definitely a Bizzarrini - The badge on the front doesn't look right for how I rememebered it and a google image search doesn't throw up anything identical. If you were wearing your trademark green fleece and brown hat then I think I saw you striding down the pit lane but wasnt confident enough to say hello.

Mentions of VPA9 in that thread were mostly about its history and said it was still in Australia; DCN's 2005 edition of 'Powered by Jaguar' said the original body had been reunited with it after years on a Skoda special and restoration was nearing completion.

No mention of Hans Hubner and how it acquired the current body..............

The Gaze/Australian car was raced in Europe in 1999 and 2000 (as VPA9) by Mac Hulbert and new TNFer Julian Bronson, and Michael Steele since then

A second car, allegedly started but not finished by the factory, was built up as a Jaguar-engined single-seater in the 1980s, and converted to sportscar spec in the mid '90s with open bodywork (also as VPA9). It has been in Germany since 1996, and is presumably the car now with Hans Hubner

There was a theory that the Gaze car was really VPA8, but part of the number had been worn off by stones or something else, but I believe that has been discounted
