'Senna's the best, Nico's the prettiest'

The Formula One drivers have spoken: Ayrton Senna is the best there ever was and Nico Rosberg is a 'beautiful woman.'

Bild am Sonntag recently conducted an anonymous survey involving 20 of the 24 current drivers, with only Williams and Renault not participating.

The 'Best Driver Of All Time' went to the late Ayrton Senna, who secured in 12 votes, while Michael Schumacher was second with three and Alain Prost second with two.

As for the 'Best Active Driver', that went to Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, however, the Spaniard did not even feature in the top three for 'Who Will Win This Year's World Title'.

That was topped by Lewis Hamilton with eight votes while six drivers believe Sebastian Vettel will win it and two reckon it will go to Jenson Button.

Hamilton also led the 'Gnarliest Driver' category ahead of Alonso and Schumacher while Monaco was voted the 'Most Dangerous Track' ahead of Suzuka, Singapore and Montreal.

As for the 'Most Beautiful Woman In F1', TF1 reporter Marion Jollès clinched that title ahead of Hamilton's girlfriend, Nicole Scherzinger, while at least one of his rivals reckon Nico Rosberg deserves this honour.

Williams being the negative one again. What a surprise.

I bet Rosberg voted for himself. She seems so self-centered.

Best driver of all times:

1. Senna 12
2. Schumacher 3
3. Prost 2
4. Rindt 1
Clark 1
Hunt 1

Would be interesting to know which driver voted for whom.... Button may have voted for Prost, Kobayashi for Hunt? Nah, Kobayashi probably for Senna

Best current driver:

1. Alonso 9
2. Button 2
Hamilton 2
4. Vettel 1
Schumacher 1
Glock 1
Kovalainen 1
Chandok 1

Abstaining from vote: 2

Interesting that among his colleagues Alonso still has that reputation, so maybe the drivers know something the forumers here don´t.
Funny - Schumacher, Glock, Kovalainen and Chandok probably voted for themselves!
The vote was anonymous.

Who becomes WDC in 2010?

1.Hamilton 8
2. Vettel 6
3. Button 2
Alonso 2

Abstaining from vote: 2

Quite interesting, this one - probably Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso and Button have voted for themselves. Not so Webber (?!?) - he should believe in himself if he is to have any chance.

The gnarliest driver

1. Hamilton 3
2. Alonso 2
M Schumacher 2
4. Vettel 1
Kubica 1
Glock 1
Sutil 1
B Senna 1
di Grassi 1
R Schumacher 1
J Villeneuve 1

Abstaining from vote: 3

This is a fun one - J Villeneuve the gnarliest - who in the present field of drivers could have cast that vote? Schumi ? And about Ralfie? Trulli?

The most dangerous track

1. Monaco 9
2. Suzuka 3
3. Singapur 2
4. Montreal 1
Spa 1

Abstaining from vote: 4

Interesting that Singapur is considered so dangerous.

Given that BILD made that survey it will not have been taken serious by all drivers (particularily the German speaking ones) yet the results have a certain validity to them.

Ten drivers voted for their own wife/girlfriend to be the most beautiful woman in F1.

One driver voted for Barbie. Webber?!?

I wonder how the "gnarliest" question was phrased on the original questionnaire. Because that phrase has been google translated from the original German story.

It may be anonymous but its pretty obvious who has voted for themselves ! : I reckon everyone in the best drivers and WDC list probably gave themselves a vote.

Webber must have been one of the two who abstained from the WDC question - either that, or he has very little faith in himself!

I do know that both Button and Webber are Prost fans, so they might have been the ones who voted for him.

I do wonder, who voted for Rosberg?

fieseste/fies = nasty, mean, obnoxious

Presumably the original question was in english, so one can only guess which english word they used in their questionnaire.

It's surfer and skateboarder talk. It means awesome, radical, or extreme. Basically extraordinary events or abilities.

As an example, Tony's Hawk's 720 was Gnarly.

So gnarly is not "fies", which means nasty, mean, obnoxious.

Question remains, what have BILD put into their survey in English - gnarly and thus Hamilton has a much more positive meaning than "fies", meaning that Hamilton is the meanest of all drivers.

I'd say that gnarly in this instance would mean to display the riskiest behaviour- if you're skating/surfing and you do something that is gnarly, then you become gnarly yourself..

Schumacher: Vettel, Sutil, Liuzzi
Senna: Hamilton, Schumacher, Massa, B Senna, Chandok, Kobayashi, Buemi, Alguersuari, Trulli, de la Rosa, di Grassi, Kovalainen
Rindt: Rosberg

I don't think that was the meaning in this Survey. Why would they name Hamilton the most awesome driver but have Alonso as the best by a landslide?

Kind of funny isn't it because it seems as though they've had to vote for the best driver and the 'gnarliest' with gnarly perhaps inferring unpleasant. It's more than likely the 'gnarliest' is thought of as the biggest threat hence the dislike. Also I don't think a lot of these drivers took this seriously or they don't have a clue, also this is Bild is it likely to be fabricated?

That's how I took it in the English version. So his overtaking, wet weather driving, general pushing the limit wins him the award for being gnarly but doesn't get him the best driver gong which goes to a "less out there but better in driver eyes" Alonso.

In light of the German version, I'm questionning that a bit. But I can't see Bild getting such a big % of the grid to take part in a survey that would include a negative question like that. So I am guessing that Bild is playing fast and lose with the German translation on that one.

Actually, come to think of it, Chandhok is a Prost superfan so I would be surprised if he didn't vote for him. And looking at the BBC driver profiles, Button wouldn't answer the question about if he preferred Senna or Prost because "it would be wrong to try to choose between them".

Clark has got me puzzled as well.

Not sure how old most of you guys are (or whether there are any Americans in this thread or used to watch crap movies like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) but

"gnarly" is an Americanism from the late 80s/very early 90s that means pretty much the same as cool (but maybe a little bit more edgy).... its fallen into disuse and I havent heard it used (or seen it used in writing) in at least 10 years .... nice to know it lives in on Germany

http://onlineslangdi...ition of/gnarly this is the best definition for this context:

adjective
•very good, excellent; COOL.
That trick on your skateboard was gnarly!
That party was so gnarly I knew the police would show up.
See more words meaning: good, okay, cool, awesome, fun

This definition is also pretty much as I remember it http://www.urbandict...php?term=gnarly

...Surprise, surprise, F1 drivers think LH's driving is "gnarly".... whodathunkit!

Thanks, Oho, the point was which word they used towards the drivers in the survey (in English): mean? gnarly? nasty? obnoxious?

As knowing the word that they used had of course an influence on their vote - I wonder if they have really asked the equivalent of "fies" or a milder term. We´ll see what they answer.

So far I got two automated answers from BILD on my request for clarification, saying that my request had reached them and I should be patient.

A funny aside: BILD chose to call their survey "The most honest F1 survey of all times!"

Thinking about it, surely it was one of the Fauxtus drivers who voted for Clark...Trulli's been around for a while and suffered at the hands of some of those on the list, so it might be him, with a greater appreciation of the history of the sport.

As we're talking about current drivers, it can safely be assumed it was someone who obviously is far too young to have been there himself and, as there exists by no means enough conclusive film material about Clark, most likely gathered his whole knowledge second and third hand from books and old magazines and is now under the impression he knows more than his average peers.

That would make sense, one of the two Lotus drivers, Trulli or Kovalainen.
