Hi All

Any clues on what the ring gear came off as used on the little flywheels fitted to the 30 degree lean over FJ/F3 motors in the early sixties?

The clutch shaft running through it all is a 10 spline, 7/8" and MK IV Hewland box is relatively early, serial numbered just above 100 together with a 30 degree Hewland Spacer Plate.

I've had a couple of possible votes so far, one for a Renault Dauphine and the other as "maybe some small Fiat".

I imagine that one of those may be about right, or not far off the mark at least........any ideas??

The flywheel in question over which the ring gear is shrunk, measures 7.885" over it's front side edge.

It's stamped "Shrunk on 12/64" which may date the ring gear as earlier than that......

Repco p/n 224.....232mm od, 200mm id, 8mm wide, 90teeth. 1956/60 Dauphine / Floride 845cc.....200mm equates to 7.874" which would equate to the heated size reqd to shrink it on to the flywheel. Nothing elso on my list that comes close in regard to dimensions you supplied. Those Renault box's are/were tough little beasts, I ran a 1650 ford thru one out of an R10 with locked spool & never broke it in a Hillman Imp years ago with 10" wide race rubber.
Cheers

Now comes the fun bit, sourcing one. I would suspect that Dauphine stuff will be a little thin on the ground now. best of luck.

In an article in the Independant On Sunday, they reckoned that the "widow makers" were still being made in Argentina as late as 1971! Perhaps Repco have a branch in Buenos Aires!!!

Or, how do you say Repco in Argentinian??

I believe that there is a standard Toyota item that will do the job. I need to do some checking & will get back to you in a few days.

Made a couple of calls. Miss info I'm sorry.
Apparently BDA Atlantic ones can use a Morris Minor ring gear and there is a Toyota one that is basically the same but thicker in width before modifying. This measures to a diameter of 270 OD tho. Not the size of what you were after.

Best suggestion would be to turn up a billet out of a good quality carbon steel and hob or mill and index the teeth into a new single piece flywheel.
Lighter, Stronger & Better but not cheaper. You could then run it as is or induction or flame harden the teeth. However I did see an aluminium flywheel with ali teeth that ran quite well. Just don't have a miss engage tho.

Good Luck!

The standard ring gear for any racing Ford based engine in an openwheeler with a Hewland
is 104 teeth ring gear which as has been stated is ex morry minor/ A 30 etc. with the exception of
F.Fords which use a 110 tooth ring gear presumably ex Cortina/Escort.
By Ford based I mean , Ford pushrod/twin-cam/BD series.

Bryan Miller.

Just replaced the 90 tooth ring gear on an early MAE Cosworth 30deg F3 engine.
The Repco part number is correct - Renault Dauphine. Don't know how many are left though !

I have used a decent gear cutter to cut a custom EN24T ring gear to my spec to fit a starter to an Edwardian Wolseley that the owner was finding difficult to start by hand. This cost a surprisingly small sum, and the only issue was should the gear cutter leave it as machined or hardened, as if the latter, he couldn't guarantee it wouldn't warp. We opted to have it hardened and it went on beautifully and has never given a moment's trouble. Not sure where you are located - my gear cutter was in the middle of England - but PM me if you want the details...

I seem to remember using an Austin A35 ring gear as a replacement.
