  oooh.

Porche vs Peugeot vs Toyota. now all that is left is for ferrari to create a prototype

EDIT: Aston should be in the mix aswell, if they sort out themselves.

Porsche/Audi owned by the same company and a possible conflict of interest. That means Audi will probably leave?

I wonder if they'll do different specs, hard to imagine a diesel. Plus Porsche and Audi aren't really in the same section of the car market.

They may do it the same way they did with Bentley. Run the first year for testing and then pull out to let the other manufacturer win...

YES!

Audi-Peugot has been a great fight, but nothing can beat Porsche-Ferrari. So I keep my fingers crossed for them to join as well (with Alonso, that would be cool - ok, now I'm getting carried away....)

This and the world championship: sportscar racing has been deadish for quite a while, but this year we can hardly complain!

So will it be Red Bull-Audi, or will it be Williams-Audi? :-)

Good news Porsche are back. It was said on comentary during the 24 hours that the ACO and Mazda were having a meeting on Saturday night and that a fuel economy formula was in the offing again.

It would be wonderful to have a formula that allowed more diverse cars.

Toyota is already in, albeit only as Rebellion's engine supplier. But if they like what they're seeing (and apart from nonsense fuel equalization, why wouldn't they) they might as well come back with full effort. Cologne factories are still there.

Porkies back at the front, yey. Spyders never really catched my imagination.

So Porsche will run for 2014, then that whole project will disappear?

I think both will stay. Like Ross said, both companies are not directly competing off the track, and it might be a way to have VW run a diesel program and a petro program.

But according to Adrian Newey, the original plans to have four-cylinder turbos were proposed because Audi was showing an interest in F1, and have now been changed to V6s because the interest is no longer there.

Anyway, it's great news for such a famous marque to return with a works prototype programme. Hopefully Audi will stick around as well.

Nice to see a classic name committing to LMP1, but I can't see Audi sticking around - would be nice if they came to F1, but based on what Newey said, I can't really see that either.

I think VW viewed it as one or the other. Go to F1 with Audi, or stay in sportscars and bring back Porsche. I think they did the best thing for them. VW has no F1 experience, and nobody wants to remember Porsche's last attempt.

It's great to see Porsche setting out it stall like this. I hope both Audi and Porsche can co-exist and be competitive enough to fit for outright win.

That probably depends largely on the regulations come 2014 though.

It will probably be similar to how it was when Bentley raced at Le Mans. No factory Audis but doesn't mean no racing Audis

They won't allow a factory Porsche LMP1 racing against a factory Audi LMP1.

That will be a petrol engine then.
Strange, really.
The biggest car builder in the world (I think they are ahead of toyota) could certainly finance a little V6 turbo for F1.

Great news, Porsche are sportscar racing as far as I am concerned. 2014 though? Giving themselves plenty of time aren't they. I can't see Audi sticking around, why would VW spend money on 2 teams competing against each other and also effectively halve their resources. You'd think the majority of the Audi personnel, with all their experience, will just step into clothes with a new badge on. I hope its called the 918, like that Hybrid concept car they did last year.

Also I was fairly sure it was confirmed recently that Toyota have already started testing an LMP1 commissioned by Dome and are using the Lola engine deal to get an idea of what the crack is?

RE Ferrari getting involved. There was that much publicized quote from de Montezemelo when he was invited to drop the start flag a couple of years back when he said Ferrari would return to Le Mans one day. Maybe that was just a tease. You'd think with all the cost cutting going on in F1 and the ban on testing they'd have the time/pocket money to be able to do it, what happened to all the lads on their test team? Or maybe they have signed a pact with the devil (Bernard Ecclestone) that they will only compete in Formula 1? If so, just bung a Maserati, Alfa Romeo or Lancia badge on it, we'll all know what it really is!

Also, rules that allow better equality with Petrol/Diesels and larger engines but with a fuel restriction formula would be nice. Variety is the spice.

I think they looked at Toyota in F1 as their motives to stay in sports cars. Even as an engine builder, it is difficult to be competitive in F1, for anyone. Why spend hundreds of millions of dollars/euros with a big chance of not finding success?

I guess Porsche will have petrol engine? But, what chance they have against diesel? I don't think Audi against Porsche will be bad for VW. Both company will gain from it, their clients are different.

I can't see a big reason why Audi and Porsche can't co-exist at La Sarthe. Audi lets VAG boast about their diesel powerplants and how advanced they are while Porsche goes with a Petrol approach.

I think it might have more to do with LMP regulations expected to change quite radically (energy/fuel limit formula) in 2014. Nothing is official, but see "MINUTES OF THE LMP CONSTRUCTORS MEETING JUNE, 30th 2010" here: http://www.mulsannes...newsjuly10.html

If the regulation change happens, 2014 is the earliest date that is viable.

Comment from Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller earlier this year:

"We would not necessarily have to line up against Audi, but we would do it if we need to and it would mean there are two of the [VW] group's brands fighting in the races. The likelihood that the group wins would therefore obviously be increased."

He urged all the VW brands to get together to "agree on a motorsport strategy for the coming years".

It's great news, and following on from the news of a World Championship - things are looking up for Sportscars.
It's also a sign of the VW Groups commitment to top line Motorsport - the WRC with VW in 2013, and now this in 2014.
Will Audi stay?? If not, I would imagine the Porsche's would be run by Joest - so most people would transfer over. Dumas & Bernhard are already Porsche factory drivers.

Umm...

An update from Audi Sport, Porsche's sister brand, in a statement said this decision was a purely Porsche one:

“This is the decision of Porsche company, a decision in which Audi is not involved. Audi relishes the prospect of every strong new opponent at Le Mans and in the new FIA Sportscar World Championship. Porsche’s entry into the LMP1 class is evidence of the high level of attraction of sport prototypes”.

Seems Audi are sticking around, but I wouldn't be sad to see them go on the condition there was another serious factory effort to take on Peugot, which it seems there would be.

Oh yes and bring Vipers new upcoming model to face Corvette in GTE, then we would have a real classic in our hands again!

Hopefully Porsche won't completely ignore the 911 and 'several' GT2 teams they're currently supporting.

According to Adrian Newey, they won't be joining F1. http://en.espnf1.com...tory/52832.html

This article actually confirms nothing, because the answer lies in the fact they moved to V6 Turbos.
As Newey says, the V6 is actually much more practical to package in the car than the V4 - so for all we know, Audi may have realised this and could have been quietly pushing for the V6 instead of the V4.
although it doesn't run true with their diesel program, I certainly think that Audi is still a possibility for F1. There has to be significance in the fact this has been announced a day after the F1 2014 engine regs.

“This is the decision of Porsche company, a decision in which Audi is not involved. Audi relishes the prospect of every strong new opponent at Le Mans and in the new FIA Sportscar World Championship. Porsche’s entry into the LMP1 class is evidence of the high level of attraction of sport prototypes”.

and this bit of PR answers approximately zero questions!

We'd also be foolish to forget Williams' ties with Porsche in recent years; they helped develop KERS for a factory backed hybrid 911 GT3.

good spot, but if audi is really into the whole diesel thing i still can't see them in f1.

I think that Audi is in to the whole winning thing, not diesel, 4WD, turbo or any other exotic configuration of 'something', they have been smart at appearing 'different' when entering various levels of Autoracing, and maybe they do have a V6 Turbo with energy recoupation or whatever they are trying to sell the next engine incarnation as to us the sweaty masses.

Le Mans is now very much a 'been there, done that' for Audi they need a new challenge.

Will it be F1? Who knows, does a McLaren powered by Audi sound feasable?

A factory team would be awesome, especially if they took some of the drivers and team members (howden!) across too. But I think it is more likely they would be engine suppliers - to start with anyway (see BMW)

Well, there is a spare place on the grid. I don't think Audi have the facilities needed at present to have a team in F1. In fact, the R18 is actually built by Dallara.
