This thread is in reply to the crashfest going on in another thread. Rather than drool over "great" accidents, how about a thread devoted to great saves instead? I'll start with my nominee as one of the good ones. I'm not saying it's the best ever, but it came to mind as I thought about moments that revealed some pretty smart driving:

Mansell at San Marino, 1990, as Senna [nope, BERGER...sorry] aggressively pushes him onto the grass.

Adrian Sutil Melbourne 2011 -Q2 impressive considering the proximity of the walls

The James Allen collection:

Best save since Gordan Banks:
(Lewis Hamilton)

Best save since Gordan Banks 2
(Mark Webber.)

and of course although not strictly motorsport, is what its based on:

Kimi Raikonen once did a 360 at considerable speed at Spa.

Rosberg at Long Beach 1983.

Raikkonen at Spa 2002.

Villeneuve at Spa 2005.

And this one is pure luck.

Some un-matchable ones:

Jamie Hacking, Daytona Sportbike Barber 2009

Randy Mamola, 500cc WC Misano 1985

For F1, just type 'Keke Rosberg' into Youtube, probably all of the top five of all time can be found there. :)

I realize this is somewhat vague - but a few years ago during practice at one of the grand prix there was a massive slide by Kazuki Nakajima and he heald it down a straight coming out of a corner - on the replay there was a sound bite with Patrick Head looking on and declaring "well held Kaz" - with the accompanying facial reactions and a head smile.

Anyone remember that one??

Anyway, it was just a great save - and great saves on the adge like that are always great to witness.

In this instance you are correct, it was Berger, not Senna who'd retired after 4 laps or so.

It was misjudged, but no less spectacular for it!

But yeah, Senna did push several rivals off, squeeze them or pulled a "brake test" on them, his legacy is known for those moments.

Danny Sullivan's "spin and win" in the 1985 Indy 500 certainly counts as one of the best.

This is very vague, but I've seen a video where two drivers went off at the same place ( in the wet) on the same lap, and Senna was close to the same fate but avoided it. Can't remember the track either!

It's a miracle he was able to brake down into the chicane and still overtake Webber.

There was one by Hakkinen around 99, he put his car on the track, car wanted to spin so he turned the wheel other way and the balance matched perfectly so the car was going straight forward while pointing towards an angle about 40 degrees different then the direction it was heading for relatively long time. No idea how to find it on youtube

During the 1966 Indy 500, Jim Clark managed to spin twice but was able to continue to take 2nd place. This was at a time when the conventional wisdom at Indy was that a spin meant retirement (usually because of hitting the wall). You can see one of JC's pirouettes about three minutes into this clip:

Alonso at Nurburgring for Mclaren in 07 was a good save. He lost it in massively in turn 11 (?) on his quali lap but somehome salvaged second!

There's also a video floating around out there of Alonso (again) at Monza in '08 I think it is and he is basically losing the car in every corner, he even takes his hands completely of the wheel at one point in relief that he saved it!

It was Spa 2000. He made it look like driving a rally car. You can't find it on youtube because if you search for "hakkinen spa 2000" you get the famous overtake on schumacher.

He spun exiting Stavelot but the grass was still very wet so when the front tires hit it, it helped bring the car back out of the slide.

At the top there were lots of questions, on this bulletin board at least, about trick differentials and whatever over how the car behaved during the spin.

Poor quality video, but here you see Jenson Button in rain-soaked 2008 British GP.

He overtakes 2 cars in the complex, spins at Woodcote and carries on without even losing the positions he just gained.
