News from Goodwood's press office about a new feature at the Revival meeting in September which might be of interest to some of you.

British Motocross comes to Goodwood
A record number of Spitfire aircraft won’t be the only things being scrambled at this year’s Revival (16-18 September) as Goodwood celebrates the careers and results of a group of British Motocross riders who won countless international scrambling events between 1955 and 1966. These will include the winners of the majority of BBC TV’s popular Grandstand Scrambles, plus every British 250cc and 500cc Scrambles Championship between these years.

The Revival is renowned for the quality of the riders and pre-1966 motorcycles that regularly contest the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy race, with the black-leathered competitors proving to be a firm favourite with Goodwood spectators. The new addition for 2011 of a dedicated Motocross paddock area and a wealth of top riders is certain to further enhance the Revival’s appeal for motorcycle enthusiasts.

The list of Motocross Champions due to attend the Goodwood Revival includes Les Archer (Norton), Dave Bickers (Greeves), Dave Curtis (Matchless), Arthur Lampkin (BSA), Don and Derek Rickman (Metisse), and Jeff Smith (BSA). Les Archer and Dave Bickers won the 500 and 250 European Championships respectively in 1956 and 1960-61, and Jeff Smith won two World Championships in 1964-65. The Moto Cross Champions will complete a daily parade around the Goodwood race circuit at the Revival; the majority of them mounted on their original machines. The Motocross Champions and their machines will be located alongside the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy competitors in the Motorcycle Paddock, adjacent to the Chicane on the Goodwood Finishing Straight on the circuit infield.

Scrambling Paddock to explore
In addition, an authentic period Scrambles Paddock will be re-created and filled with a group of 50 riders and their motorcycles. Amongst the pre-1966 machines already confirmed are Ariel, BSA, Cotton, DOT, Greeves, Jawa, Matchless, Tribsa, Triumph, and a Velocette, plus two early sidecar outfits.

Surrounded by a chestnut paling fence the period paddock will be adorned with an assortment of authentic 1960s advertising banners, plus the mandatory Scrutineer’s tent. Kitted out in contemporary clothing (rugby shirts atop bib & brace black leathers or Barbour suits) the supporting cast will also complete a daily parade of the Goodwood circuit…at a respectful distance behind the former Champions.

Goodwood will also acknowledge the 50th anniversary of Metisse Motorcycles at the Revival - the manufacturing firm founded by Don and Derek Rickman that later won The Queen’s Award for Industry – with a display of their motorcycles. A new book about the Rickman brothers’ exciting careers will also be launched during Revival weekend.

I have to say that I wasn't aware that all of these scrambling heroes were still with us :)
