This thread is not to discuss how socialist you think the licence fee is, how evil you think Murdoch is or what a rip off you think the Sky deals are. The Paddock Club is for discussion on non motorsport related topics.

Sky has already started with their testing news updates and this thread is for discussion of UK TV coverage of F1.

I am in the market for a new phone and this morning i discovered that Orange offers free add-on choices such a free SKY Mobile TV which includes SKY Sports 1 & 2. Does sky mobile tv also include the F1 channel?

If so then this deal would be awesome since all data for sky mobile tv is covered by Orange meaning that you have a reliable Internet connectivity for F1 that you don't need to share with flat mates or family member. Once can then easily do video out to a tv and enjoy F1 like its on the Beeb.

Lastly, does sky mobile tv include a catchup service?

After a bit of Googling it turns out Sky Mobile TV does not exist. Well, it did exist, it doesn't anymore.

https://mobile-tv.sk...ription/landing

On the 1st September 2011 Sky Mobile TV was replaced by a new service called Sky Sports TV.

How can I watch Sky Sports on my mobile?

If you don't have a Sky TV subscription you can subscribe to Sky Sports TV for £9.99/€10.99 a month and download the app from the iTunes app store. You'll have access to all 5 Sky Sports channels, Sky Sports News, ESPN and At the Races on your iPhone/iPod touch.

I would assume that Sky Sports TV will include F1 as it is/will be under the "Sky Sports" brand as a channel. May be best to enquire directly with Sky first, though.

Also, it isn't free - £9.99 a month here, however - March through November is 9 months so ~£90 (although you can then remove August, but if you like other sports you may wish to keep it).

Yeah I just checked and the name has changed to Sky Sports Mobile TV. It is free on some of the monthly Orange plans, otherwise the cost is £6 a month. Hopefully there is a quality option so that one can watch F1 at Stamdard Definition at the lowest.

I was just googling to check I would get the F1 channel as I have Sky HD but not sky sports - seems this is the case (this is probably common knowledge - but I wasn't sure myself).

However I saw the below post on the sky forum - does this help any non-Sky customers?

Can I STRESS that I can't vouch for the info below, dyor, etc: Some people seem to think it suspicious and they may well be right. I just saw it on a Sky forum and posted it here, thinking it may help some people - it doesn't apply to me as I have Sky. I'm sure a mod can delete if they think it dodgy. There'sno point me deleting it now as it's been quoted in other posts.

Hi Guys, Just thought I would join the forum to let you know about a great telephone conversation I have just had.
I am one of many people who do not want to pay the full subscription costs to enjoy the coverage of F1 2012, so have been searching for either a Free or Cheap way of watching all the races. I HAVE FOUND ONE.
Thanks to a Great Sales Consultant in SKY FREESAT, i have got information on the following.
If you happen to have a sky dish on your property, which you haven't used (left by previous owners) get the dual cable from a decent shop and fix a cable link into wherever your box is going to be, get your hands on an old or even used new sky box, via internet or Car Boot, etc..
Ring up FREESAT for Sky: 0844 209 0611
Order a Freesat Card (One off payment of £25 via phone, or if you have an old Card £20 online: https://mysky.sky.com/replacecard/home
Also this is where it is cheaper than a standard Sky Subscription (currently £20 WITHOUT HD Pack- £30.25pm including HD Pack - and this is the cheapest option apparently)...
Ask the Freesat Operator for an HD Pack Subscription (Month DD for ONLY £10.25 - Does not include movies or normal sports channels, BUT DOES INCLUDE FORMULA 1 HD CHANNEL) - and you also get the channel in SD, as well as all the normal non premium HD Channels.
So I now have the F1 HD Channel + 240 FTA channels + Extra HD Channels for ONLY £10.25pm (min 12 mth contract - which is normal) £123 for the year. Saving £240 per year.
Compare this to a Basic SKY Package to include HD Pack. £363 for the year.
Sorry for rambling, was just happy to be able to get F1 Channel for alot less than I was originally looking at paying.
If you want to confirm any of these details, simply contact FREESAT for SKY: 0844 209 0611.
Hope this was helpful to those who didn't want to get a Proper Sky Subscription just to watch F1.
...."

As said above, this may well be bull, so dyor, etc

Isn't Indycar going to be on SSF1 as well? Or is it only the opening round that has been announced?

Only the opening round has been announced as being on SSF1. Hopefully it turns out every round will be on the channel.

Another thing I just remembered, the opening titles for BBC F1 are being replaced, out go the CGI cars, and in come real F1 cars.

As I have stated before... I think you will find RupeeVision® are only using it as bait to get you to subscribe to the full SS package later on.
However I really hope I'm wrong on that one as the increase in achievable viewers this platform brings would be great for IndyCar.
I have heard that Randy wants the Indy500 seen by as many international eyes as possible so we COULD have a Monaco/Indy double header that might eat into the Beeb's 3rd live offering. As is the way with these broadcasters Sky has not responded to ANYONE'S inquiries to do with anything IndyCar.

f1 ultimate, dont know if you know this already, but rather than going direct to orange, your probably better off going buymobilephones.net , mobiles.co.uk dialaphone etc, as they normaly have much better deals. and you can use topcashback.co.uk to get 30quid back aswell :). got my lumia 800 like that for what works out to be 14 or 16 per month after rebates, with a decent contract, id be lucky to scrape under 30quid per month direct from carrier :/

Hmm, perhaps SSF1 will eventually turn into a dedicated motorsports channel for Sky Sports. Having WRC coverage, NASCAR, F1/GP2/GP3, Indycar and such. Imagine that! I'd actually consider maybe getting it.

I already have SKY HD and Sky Sports so this is only a dream. Add into the equation Georgie Thompson will be involved it is marvellous.
I am sure Sky will make this bigger and better than the BBC because SKY don't know the meaning of a budget.
I am sure looking forward to the 2012 season and beyond.

Very interesting - thanks for posting that. I think (might be wrong) that if you have freesatfromsky and pay for HD you'll also get Sky+ functionality.

Re - IndyCars, it's definitely on Sky Sports, not disputing that, just a question of whether they will take the sensible option and put every race on SSF1 or throw it round on Sky Sports 2, 3 and 4 like usual.

I would be VERY suspicious of this. The whole point of a Freesat (or Freesat from Sky), is that it is free of monthly costs, only a one off up front payment.
With this you are entering into a contract with Sky, and I have no doubt THEY WILL force you to take out the minimum Sky package, which is Entertainment Pack - £20.
If this in fact true (and not a load of rubbish from the salesperson in an attempt to con you in to getting a proper Sky account/subscription) you would only get a small number of HD channels anyway (BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD and Luxury Life HD).
I have a feeling that you have been conned out of money and you will not get the Sky Sports F1 channel!

I would be suspicious too. I've been a Sky customer for many years now (don't have HD or sports, though). I get the impression that, in general, Sky have shifted away slightly from targeting new sales (I think they know they've captured a most of what's realistically available) and they are now aggressively trying to convince existing customers to part with £10.25 more for HD. I see the F1 channel as part of that.

There are many 'ordinary' sky channels that are not available on Freesat from Sky. I'm sure the same will be the case with HD. I find it hard to believe that the HD subscription would give you any more than the HD versions of the channels that are already included in the Freesat service (e.g. BBC1 HD, ITV1 HD etc.). Afterall, if you want just the Sky+ service (no extra channels, just the ability to use a the Sky+ box, that you pay for separately, to record programs), they will charge you £10.25pm. I seriously doubt you'll get the F1 channel thrown in for that price.

I fear the peacock is right on this one.
SSF1 will NOT be on Freesat regardless of where you get it from.
The Sky Mobile you mentioned has been rebranded as SkyGo available for as a monthly sub.

DMN listed in the first post all the available options.
Referring to that might help stem the tide of queries regarding SSF1 subscription possibilities.

Think the point of the original post is - he is buying the HD pack for £10 a month on top of the freesat service.

They have stated many times SSF1 will be included in the HD pack.....so we will see in due course if this tfollows via Freesat (which actually it isnt as he has also purchased a subscription)

Think the point of the original post is - he is buying the HD pack for £10 a month on top of the freesat service.

They have stated many times SSF1 will be included in the HD pack.....so we will see in due course if this tfollows via Freesat (which actually it isnt as he has also purchased a subscription)

The whole point about the Sky HD pack is that it's an upgrade for what are already premium channels in the Entertainment, Movie or Sports packs, so I don't believe Sky would sell you that without one of those subscriptions, as all the basic HD channels are included in their Freesat pack, but none of the premium channels are available to Freesat customers. The idea may work - and as dank pointed out, that's an Apple support phone number - but I would have serious doubts unless you're using a Sky+ or Sky+HD box: Sky cards are box-specific and I'm not sure one programmed for HD will work in SD-only boxes. In fact - I just noticed the very odd wording in that post: "an old or even used new sky box". My guess would be that you'd need a REV 9 or above box to do this: most second-hand boxes will be REV 8 or below, since they're the ones which can't receive HD.

Just to be clear, it's Freesat from Sky. SSF1 will not be available on standard Freesat, you would have to be using a Sky STB with a Sky card. Having said that, everything on the Sky site indicates that the HD pack is an optional extra on top of your standard package. I'd be surprised if you can get the HD pack on it's own, but then from a marketing perspective it would make sense as a tenner month from people would still add to the coffers without costing Sky much.

Clatter is absolutely correct. SSF1 will only be included if you subscribe to the HD pack as well as the entertainment pack.

Did you read the bit where I said the telephone number included in that information is complete and utter bunkum? There's your answer.

Only the opening round has been announced as being on SSF1. Hopefully it turns out every round will be on the channel.

I thought it had been confirmed that only round 1 was on SSF1 as from round 2 onwards it will be spread across the Sky Sports channels?

Mistake and shame if true. Most races are on a Sunday evening uk time it would be ideal for the channel in my opinion.

The BBC coverage will hopefully be miles better without the terribly biased Sparky Brundle, as well as the unprofessional Croft/Davidson pairing.

From what I've gathered, commentary on Sky will be like this:

Croft - Main commentator, practice, quali, race
Brundle - Co-commentator, quali, race
Davidson - Co-commentator, practice, pundit on race day

Correct, although Brundle will be seen on the channel "on all 3 days". I should note at this point Davidson will miss Australia and Korea due to this. So it'll probably be Croft and Hill or Croft and someone else in the box for practice in Melbourne.

I'm surprised that MB would sign a deal where he's not lead commentator....

I'm not too sure about Hill being in the box for practice. He did say in an interview he wouldn't be commentating - although I guess he was talking about race comms and practice is a slightly different ball game. I wonder if we might not see John Watson brought in as Ant's understudy.

Are you aware of any other races that Ant wont be available or is it just those 2 for the whole year?

Because he seemed so keen to take over from Legard, he did a good job of it, and anything less effectively sounds like a demotion...

I'm not sure it's a demotion. He's playing the role of expert.

Also he's playing a bigger role on screen with more features. He has stated before that doing the grid walks and having to get to the booth and prepare for commentary was sometimes difficult. Ben Edwards also said he didn't envy Brundle doing the grid walks so soon before doing the commentary. He felt he needs to be in the booth preparing his information, stats etc.

Really looking forward to Ben Edwards, he is going to be good. Just a shame Brundle won't be the co commentator!

As an aside, who was the co commentator with Edwards on the CART coverage on Channel 5 in the late 90s?

Here is a look at the OB unit used by SKY for flyaway this season
Interesting that they are using the AT&T fibre connection rather than satellite for uplink.
