Rumours the 27 could blow the rear wing with exhaust gasses, i saw it in scarabs blog but would it actually work?

He said it would produce too much drag, but blowing the outer part of the wing can bring some benefit, especially while accelerating.

"Rumours are Ferrari & McLaren both have the sidepods split from the side impact protection & thus a split floor. (cont'd...)"

"Split sidepods\floor: This creates a shorter floor & moves downforce rearwards to compensate for the loss of EBD"

"This is similar to the short floor used by Mercs W02 in expectation of a lesser EBD effect in 2011, but without the short wheelbase. Clever!"

All from ScrabsF1 on twitter

Same approach by McLaren and Ferrari.

Justifies the employees movements!

If you are a Vodafone subscriber there is a prizedraw to win tickets attend the official reveal of the MP4-27: http://vip.vodafone....170120121445288

I am a subscriber so needless to say, I have entered. There's also a competition to win one of Jenson Button’s (used) race undershirts - not so keen on that!

Rumors say that the new Ferrari is ugly, while Jenson said on twitter that the MP4-27 looks beautiful!

Let's hope that the McLaren version is the beautiful and the most effective one!

Only a week away!!

Probably this is the most logic development path to follow therefore more teams may have had this idea.

* haven't some engineers gone from McLaren to Ferrari recently (+ Pat Fry who has still some McLaren "DNA" in him?)

Will the car shown at the launch be exactly the same as the one at the first test, if not in what ways do you expect it to differ?

id imagine parts they don't want photographing such as diffuser maybe the scale of certain areas, they might have the exhausts configured differently?

The front wing on the launch car will probably not be the one used in anger.

And I'm sure lots of parts will change from the first test to Melbourne. They're all going to be as sneaky as possible with all they can.

Personally, I hope that any performance differentiators they can hide are hidden and disguised as much as possible for as long as possible.

I'd imagine they'll be testing a number of configurations of exhaust/rear wing, sidepod/cooling in testing so the car may be quite different in the first race to the launch.

I'd imagine McLaren would at least test a Red Bull-esque wing (which has been adopted by a number of teams) as well as a development of the late 2010 through 2011 front wing philosophy in testing.

Same for my team, but it's pretty late in the game and any major things would be too much of a design change to really affect anything any time soon.

So on the Ferrari thread, a link was given about Mac and Ferrari running exhausts high up to blow the rear wing. I brought this point up before and was shot down like I didn't know what I was talking about. Anyone read that?

I haven't read it, but am guessing it's pure speculation... Ferrari and McLaren employees aside few wil know until the first test sessions methinks... And whichever team gets it most "right" will be quickly copied..

Yes I've read it. It came from Scarbs who is well known in the F1 world. He has a lot of technical knowledge of the cars and knows some people from different teams. He said there were rumours are Ferrari & McLaren both have the sidepods split from the side impact protection & thus a split floor. This seems to coincide with the Piola drawing of his interpretation of the new Ferrari. It(the split) was illegal last year but there was a revision for 2012 and it is a very clever idea. We'll see which teams go with it and which ones don't. I see McLaren, Ferrari & RBR going with the split.

Tomorrow we'll see the real thing! :) I reckon the /9 was altered just enough to lose the nimble beauty of the /8, wider rear for Peugeot power (joke anyway) and the nose slope was also altered.

I hope we'll get to see a pic of the /8 without ugly bargeboards, hint, hint... ;)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Not too long to wait now :)

Item 3, the front end pull rods, I'd be very supprised to see them.

Also the artist seems to have placed the crash structure too far forwards.

From Andy in the Ferrari thread which kinda says to me McLaren have these wing structures but further back. :p

This car was as good as the Williams, it's shame it was never recognized due to an engine that lacked 100+ bhp to the Reanult engine (and 50+ bhp to the Ford on Schumacher's Benetton).

i like minimal, but for me the best looking F1 car's were the 2007-2008, just ridiculous amount of intricacies, each lending to the aerodynamics of the car, works of art in terms of performance, this made them beautiful to me. The latest car's have come a long way since Melbourne 2009, where they just looked a little ridiculously under developed for a modern piece of machinery. But now i look at the RB8 and the MP4-26 and think one is as close to perfection packaging the other an innovative solution, both look supreme machines. Next year... we'll I like the design of the 'Leaked' Ferrari, and I have no worries that the McLaren will look every bit of a mechanical work of art.

It's an evolution of a sport, it would have stagnated had we stuck to the 2008 spec, so its good that they change it up every so often, it's one reason I'm excited for 2014, a reboot to see something different.

Don't forget, the more power the engine makes, the greater the cooling demand. Plus there is more sophistication with cooling now - KERS cooling, gearbox, oil, etc.

That car, though - it has that rare quality of being right because it looks right.

Modern engines with improved manufacture and materials probably need less cooling than older ones regardless of the power output.

Maybe - not to a huge degree though. put it another way - if they could make modern F1 cooling inlets smaller, they would! There is not an obvious correlation between inlet size for an 80s/90s/whatever car and a current one.

As for the forthcoming Mac - I hope they come up with something that doesn't look like a few wild concepts shoe-horned together. Just look at that MP4-8 - it looks just right - like one person designed it, not a hundred! And that is possible nowadays - look what a masterpiece the Red Bull was.

I agree with most of what you're saying. I just think that the FIA should consider aesthetics when making the rules. I'm sure some people will laugh at that suggestion but I really do think the 'look' of the cars is very important. I personally hate the re-fuelling ban because it forces the teams to design cars that are the length of a border seperating two small countrys. Waay too long, way to big.

I agree that Formula 1 should not and cannot stagnate. As much as I love the look of the previous generation cars, F1 should never look back and never, ever go retro. I just hope for a new generation of forward-looking, beautiful cars.

"beauty" is subjective. There are many people who just plain hate the look of 90s. There are people who like long and slick cars.

I never liked the 90's cars much myself. I'm 'getting used' to the look of the post-2009 cars. My favourites were the 2007-2008 aero demon overlords though.

Also back then engines did one race and that was it. If engines with the current regs only had to last one race, I'm sure the teams could skimp a little more on cooling.

So it looks like the U-pods might be a thing of the past. Will any one else be dissappointed if the /27 is revealed with conventional side pods?

I hope the rumours of the 'fighter plane' side pods is true. I also hope that the nose goes even lower then the /26.
I know everyone will say "I don't care as long as it's fast blah, blah, blah...". Well that's a given and I'm sure that every McLaren fan is hopping for that. I'm just wondering what you guys hope the /27 will look like?

Oh yes, certainly. I like jet fighters and Merc G class at the same time. Call me freak, but this is the reality.
However, I will have to live with the nature twin of 2012 F1 car:
