Shumi's are bad aren't they...

Spun by Grosjean in Malaysia? China?
DNF with loose wheel in... Malaysia?
DNF with jammed DRS in Canada
DNF squeezed into the barrier in Monaco
DNF Spain with Senna (Senna's fault IMO)

any others?

Schumacher has had easily the worst luck, quite contrary to his first career. I don't subscribe to the view that Alonso has had the best luck, he has simply been the best driver.

For example, the fact that Vettel retired in Valencia worked in the favour of everybody as he was owning everybody. Alonso won because he worked his way up to second via overtaking, thus making his own luck.

Likewise Malaysia where he was taking pressure from Perez, giving pressure. It was Perez who went off.

If best luck means best driver, it's clear he has had the best luck.

Alonso would've been nowhere near the Lotuses and Hamilton if it wasn't for the SC. Or did his amazing skill cause the SC too?

I'd like to reply but this will reignite the former discussions/arguments.

Engine failure in Malaysia, Bruno hit him in China in T1, Vergne punctured his tire in Bahrain.

I thnk this is more unlucky than just driving and seeing your opponent's engines failing.

Your analysis is negative, pointless and simply wrong all at the same time. First, you should look towards who made the most out of the situation and that was Ferrari and Alonso. Alonso overtook Grosjean as soon as the SC came in, putting him in the position that gave him the win (rather than second instead of third).

Second, McLaren would have had a front jack failure regardless of SC. Alonso was less than five seconds behind Hamilton when the SC came out. He lost 10 seconds to him in the pits. Third, Alonso was already ahead of Kimi.

Bahrain - DRS failure in Q1 and gearbox change
Spain - agreed
Monaco - agreed and he had fuel pressure/pump failure

Best luck is still Alonso. Remember, this guy hasn't retired with a car problem since Malaysia 2010. His car is as bulletproof as Schumacher's Ferrari used to be during its prime years.

That's not luck or bad luck, that's the team working hard on reliability, if other cars brake, then blame those teams for not working on reliability or sacrificing it for more speed.

Ah I'd forgotten Oz and Bahrain. So that's:

DNF gearbox in Oz
DRS failure in Q1 and gearbox change in Bahrain
Spun by Grosjean in Malaysia
DNF with loose wheel in China
DNF with jammed DRS in Canada
DNF squeezed into the barrier in Monaco
DNF Spain with Senna (Senna's fault IMO)

Monaco is some kind of joke? He didn't even touch the wall. And it's MS who was squeezing in.

In Spain is was his fault. Ruined his and Senna's race. He didn't got the penalty for free.

Maybe better way to put it will be that Alonso suffered the least from anything out of his control so far this season. I'm not really sure since I'm not following his races closely so I stand corrected, but I agree with most here as I can't see past Alonso really. That said, I take no credit off his performance this season :)

MS was squeezing in? Please, I've seen you post before - remember what you were saying about Grosjean and Schumacher in Malaysia? You tried to pin that one on Schumacher.

Spain? Senna wasn't going anywhere in that race: his tyres were shot.

I don't really treat your posts with much credibility .

We are discussing luck from driver's point of view, not team's. And drivers don't design the car to be reliable or not. Hence Alonso has been lucky (reliable car), Schumacher unlucky (unreliable car) this season.

Alonso has had the best luck and Schumacher the worst.

So where was Alonso that lucky apart from Valencia?
Australia - No
Malaysia - No/Maybe Hamilton's pitstop
China - No
Bahrain - No
Barcelona - No/Maybe only Hamilton's penalty
Monaco - A bit, surviving start
Canada - No/on the contrary
Silverstone - No

So where was Alonso that lucky apart from Valencia?

I suspect his position in this pole is less down to him picking up lucky points (as you point out) and more down to him having a trouble free run so far this season - no reliability issues, no botched pitstops, no drivers taking him out.

It doesn't feel enough to me to qualify him as the most lucky driver this season by the margin he's winning this poll by, but who's the alternative candidate? Perhaps "least unlucky" driver would be a better title than luckiest?

It's also worth pointing out that I'm sure different people have different definitions of "luck".

I suspect for most in this thread, it's anything outside the driver's control: so reliability, strategy errors, pitstops all come in to it.

For others, I suspect that it's a bit different. With what your team does being seen as a function of the car the driver is driving, reliability, strategy errors, pitstops are all factored in with "but you get to drive that car" and therefore don't qualify as luck.

From the point of view of within team battles (eg Massa vs Alonso, Button vs Hamilton etc), I think the former definition is fair (given they are driving for the same team). From the point of view of a full grid battle, I can understand the latter definition more. As it pretty much restricts the discussion to just "no fault on track incidents", I can see why it's not as popular though.

Lol at your thumbsdowns. In Monaco Grosjean drove into him, being pushed by Alonso, because the wall left MS nowhere to go. In Spain he committed down the outside then in braking area Bruno moved again. Then on top of the DNF he got the penalty.

Anyway you can take away Spain and Schumi still wins by a mile, even though by normal standards Hamilton has been pretty unlucky.

That's fine put it on the luck side.

On the other side his car was slower than his competition. Is fastest car luck or do drivers deserve it? If you start constantly from the back your luck-o-meter is in the low position at every race. There are many things that can happen during starts, during overtaking, strategy is limited.

If bad pitstop or engine failure can be described as unlucky from driver's point of view, surely speed, handling of the Ferrari in many races can be too. It's part of the package.
