You’ve seen 360-degree, panoramic photos before. You may have even taken a few with the latest Android release or iOS app. But what you haven’t experienced is the fully controlled, immersive 360-degree video on offer from Making View.

The Norwegian company released its latest collaboration with Red Bull, fitting the firm’s custom-developed camera system atop one of the energy drink dynasty’s F1 cars and giving driver Sébastien Buemi a chance to tackle the track.

The result is the video above, which allows you to pan around the circuit using your keyboard or mouse as Buemi canes the open-wheeled racer up and over 200 MPH.

Considering motorsports coverage hasn’t kept pace with the technological advances enjoyed by football, basketball and baseball fans, this has the potential to bring racing action into the 21st century – assuming you’re basking in a steady stream of high-speed bandwidth.

Was wondering that myself, but a bit of googling says its Norway’s Rudskogen Motorsenter, in their show car in August.

This youtube video shows it circulating with the funny bulbous camera on top...

It is indeed Rudskogen, a track owned by Harald Huysman (former World Sportscar driver for Walter Brun, and former manager for Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen). Michael Schumacher also own 5% of Rudskogen, and Harald uses that for what it's worth.

What a pitty there is no F1 race in Scandinavia. Finnland would deserve one! Amazing landscape, not like these smoggy India etc.

Neat video. It is correct though that F1 coverage has not really kept up with most other sports - never see anything like split screen shots that are almost mandatory on NASCAR coverage (yes, they are sometimes overused, but great for simultaneous pit stops etc.).

Too bad it can never happen. It's way too expensive to happen nowadays. Norway would probably be the only country (in northern Europe) which could afford it... Or maybe not even it.

This really is a great video. I hope we get to see this sort of technology deployed more. Wouldn't it be great to see the crowds and other cars in the middle of a first corner rush?

If mounted strategically on each side of the body on each vehicle, this could perhaps help aid in analytical work how vehicles interact on the track in real time, with increased data accuracy.

Going by how Bernie and his companies improve F1 broadcasting we will see this technology beeing deployed in the year 2525

FOM is just too lame, otherwise such great stuff could be the norm on F1 coverages. As others have said, there is so much thing that could be done to improve the broadcasting but they are stand still in the past in FOM. Even their telemetry is out-dated
