Karun Chandok's Top 5 at minute 49.00 of the F1 Insider - who are your Top 5?

Interesting that Karun put Kimi in front of Seb (Fer and Lewis are understandable) - and especially that he has Nico Hülkenberg already in Top 5.....thus

1.Alonso
2.Hamilton
3.Raikkonen
4.Vettel
5.Hülkenberg

My end of season Top 5 are slightly more conservative:

1. Alonso
2. Hamilton
3. Vettel
4. Raikkonen
5. Button

Your thoughts on Chandok's Top 5? Your personal Top 5 at the end of 2012?

He's right to put Alonso and Hamilton at the top, although I don't necessarily agree that the former should be above the latter. Hamilton has been flawless this season (then again so has Alonso!). I just feel that Lewis got the most out of the car at almost every race, but Alonso seemed to tail off when it really mattered at the end of the season.

Not sure about Raikkonen above Vettel though. For me, everybody's getting a bit too hyped up about his return, and I think that with the speed that the Lotus had at the start of the year, Kimi should have more than one win to be considered superior to the world champion. Saying that, I was pretty underwhelmed with Vettel's performance this year. He looked rather average for the first half of the season, and only seemed to pull ahead of Webber when RBR found an innovation which switched the balance rearwards.

Hulkenberg in at fifth is perhaps the most controversial choice, but who else actually deserves to be there? Webber? Don't think so - well beaten by Seb again. Button? Had a dreadful season in my opinion despite the three wins, and has been outclassed this year by Hamilton. Any other contenders? Not for me... So I think Hulkenberg is justified in 5.

What is the point of this thread when there's already a thread about Top 10?

Hamilton has been brilliant but he didn't have the title pressure on him. So Alonso/Vettel with a slight plus for Fernando.

5th could be a number of drivers- Webber, Button, Hulk, Perez..... after the top four nobody was particularly outstanding all season long. They all had their dips in form.

My top five would be:

1. Alonso - stunning form all year
2. Hamilton - minor blip in Valencia v Maldonado/ wrong way on setup in Spa but otherwise a return to his 2010 form; an impressive turnaround after 2011 and especially after Buttons's victory in Melbourne.
3. Vettel- shaded by Webber early season, but flew later on when updates more suited to his driving style arrived- great races at Spa and Brazil showing his class
4. Raikkonen - should be even better next season, couple of victories missed out on in Bahrain and Hungary due to compromised quali sessions
5. Hulk? maybe his performances are fresher in the memory, but slow start to the season. Perez? Some stunning drives, but fell away after being announced as a McLaren driver. Webber? Two victories, good quali pace v SV, but seemed to have a scrappy end to the season. Button? Great start and some great drives, but his season fell apart for a few races, only unreliability suffered by his teammate saved him from finishing far behind in the points. Rosberg? Great drive in China, but was a bit anonymous for most of the season. The Merc effect? Schumacher? Started very strongly, but too many incidents. Also awful luck- Merc effect again. di Resta- impressive start to season shading highly rated HUlk, but like Perez fell away quite badly as the season progressed. I don't know how you seperate that lot..... I'll give it to JB, based on a greater number of impressive drives.

Karun's top 5 is the same as mine in the same order so not much to add.

Placing Vettel above Räikkönen would not be a crime, but he drove a car that was just so much better overall, it's hard to compare the two.

Come on, he scored points only 7 times (and his 6 last races was just hopeless)! Sauber was really strong in this season, way stronger than Merc but drivers wasted C31 potential.

I go with Chandhok's list, but just swap Vettel and Raikkonen. Raikkonen's qualifying was too much of a weakness to possibly be considered top 3 material this year IMO.

5 Maldonado (I know THIS will cause controversy)...

Yeah. I find it weird how someone can rate Maldonado so high, despite the fact I have some positive bias toward him (as a Williams fan I wanted the team to keep him for another year and failed to see better options available, he is the one among F1 drivers who I wished the best in the last 20 months).

I can think of at least 12-14 drivers who probably would have comfortably outscored him this year at Williams. And this is a thread about who did the best job this year, not who has the most speed if I understand correctly? So I find putting Maldonado so high somewhat unreasonable.

What does a hattrick of championships have to do with this year's championship? And what is so difficult about the concept that the world champion isn't necessarily the best performing driver that particular year?

Yes, because Mark outperformed him... 3 times!
Stop repeating a myth you know nothing about and do some research.
If being outperformed by your team-mate in thee races in a whole year doesn't earn you credit, Alonso has no business up there either, nor Lewis.

Not that bizarre - look at the car Seb had available these last three years. And - no one mentions Webber in the Top 5, so it is not unrealistic. Webber is somewhere between P7 - P10.

I think in many ways Seb will completely convince people only once he beats a team mate of the calibre of Alonso/Hamilton/Raikkonen or once he drives another car than a Red Bull and is equally victorious like he is now...

Great to see Hülkenberg, Perez and Maldonado up in some Top 5's - these are definitely stars of the future, soon to be joined by Vallteri Bottas.

Kimi had a very poor start to the season everyone seems to forget this. Hamilton has shaded Alonso. Hamilton was off the pace at one race, Spa, whereas Alonso has had a few more off days than that and his quali hasn't been as mind blowing as Hamiltons. Alonso was more at fault for Kimi than Lewis was for Pastor. However Alonso's starts and race performances have been very good in comparison to Hamilton (although could easily be down to Ferrari being bad quali/good race car and McLaren vice versa). I don't think there is any justification for Alonso ahead of Lewis, but a tie is feasible.

5. Hulkenberg

The cream certainly rose to the top in 2012.

Hamilton was driving brilliantly all season only let down by his team/car reliability.

Alonso has been superb but the Ferrari wasnt as bad as he made it out to be. Never count him out though.

Kimi was a little rusty to begin with but what do you expect with two years out of the sport. Drove brilliantly though, especially in the races.

Vettel - lacklustre when the car wasnt right came good but in a dominant package.

Hulk - narrowly pips Perez, but though takes him some time to warm up into the season - he's a gun driver and I feel McLaren/Ferrari should have picked him for a race seat next year

Not really bizzare. Inspite of winning the 2008 title, Hamilton was widely seen as the third best driver of that year, behind Kubica and Alonso.

Well there is no criteria at all. If that were laid out, perhaps all of our answers would be similar. As it stands, everyone is looking at it based on their own definition of "performance".

It's Mark Webber. Vettel did not have a stunning start to the season until they changed the car to come to him. He had a great end to the season with a dominant car and competitors with zero luck.

But those standards apply to all drivers, don't they? Who do you think was the strongest team mate this season out of Webber, Button, Massa and Grosjean? People most likely wouldn't say that Grosjean was the strongest, so that does not really explain why Kimi could be rated above Vettel.

Reposting the list from the other thread:

1. Vettel
2. Alonso
3. Hamilton
(all 3 more or less the same and very impressive throughout the season - any order is fine)
4. Kimi
5. Hulkenberg
(both impressed me, but both needed some time to shine)

We're supposed to believe this, coming from the man who spent most of the year playing down the performance of his car?
