I read the four installments of the FIASCO war story by Don Capps recently and read in the latest addition that the FIA/FISA only named the current WC 'FIA Formula One World Championship' in 1981. What was/were the previous official designations of the series?

World Drivers' Championship is what it was usually called in English. NOT the World DRIVING Championship, which some American jurnos call it. That is for vehicles pulled by 4 horses!

The official title in the FIA Yellow Book was:

Championnat du Monde des Conducteurs/World Championship of Drivers

The constructors' title was:

Coupe Internationale des Constructeurs Formule 1/International Cup for Formula 1 Manufacturers

Thanks guys. So, if I understand correctly, the official title of the WDC from 1950 until 1980 was "World Championship of Drivers". The official title of the WCC from 1958 until 1980 was "International Cup for Formula 1 Manufacturers". Both titles changed into "Formula One World Championship" for the 1981 season.

And what about the World Rally Championship?

We now have the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers and the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers. When did the 'FIA' designation officially come into the title, already from the start, or later?

Just out of a sense of curiosity and risking attack as being "ahistorical" once again, is there any sense of agreement or disagreement on this notion? I have invited Winston Smith back to the RVM and just interested if this is still considered heresy.

Inquiring Minds and all that....

I watched 1981 Las Vegas Grand Prix recording from BBC and noted that they referred to World Driver's Championship, not to its already one year old new name Formula One World Championship. Moreover, today I checked 1988 Morning Star cuts and found that they used only "World Driver's Championship".
