Let's hope he didn't have to do any shots looking forward over the driver's head. Talk about being on the hot seat!

I'd have said it was the Marsh Special; with someone a bit closer to home handling the camera.

Frank,

Was that Tony Brise getting a lift from Brian Redman? I was at that race in '75 and I'll be there again this weekend (rain or shine!).

It looks like a Lotus with an American V8 stuffed into it. The injectors remind me of the can-am engines.

 Marsh-GM British Championship hill-climb car with Tony Marsh driving - making a Suncrush orange juice commercial! I just liked the bondage aspect, I suppose, plus the eiderdown round the bum as a crushable structure...

Is that Suncrush or Nutcrush

If you are stupid enough to be tied to a racing car do you realy need a crash helmet?

I assumed it was a nappy (diaper) - in case of, er , accidents.

I think it was Jody Scheckter getting the lift. Other photos from the same location show Brise in red as he clambers over the tire barrier and is a focal point as he strides across the pit lane from his Turn 12 de-carring:

I envy you the Long Beach experience, rain or shine. I missed my opportunity to sign on as a worker again this year. Wait 'til next year . . .

That F5000 pic has prompted me to dig out a book I'd forgotten I had: ''Roar in the city - a pictorial essay of the inaugural Long Beach Grand Prix''; aside from a map, the entry list and a brief intro it is an A4 paperback full of pictures by a chap called John McCollister. I can't remember where or when i bought it, but it's the only copy I've ever seen. Inside the cover, it has a hastily printed rubber stamp declaring it to be ''not sponsored, approved or endorsed by or associated with the long Beach Grand Prix Association'' - so I don't know if there was some trouble when it first appeared...

Reminds me of something I have read recently about a Jim Clark photo where he appears to be singing, whereas in reality he was mouthing at the photographer to remove his foot from the racing line.

For those who are not aware of him, a few words about Tony Marsh, the driver in Doug's pic. He won the British Hillclimb Championship as long ago as 1955, I think. He did F1 in in the late 50's on a low-key basis and is still competing on the hills and in sprints today. Far from competing in an historic car, however, his current mount is a carbon-tubbed Gould single seater with 3.5 litre Judd V8 power, a remarkable guy!

Marsh was RAC Hilclimb Champion in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1965, 1966 and 1967

A little like Ivan Tighe, who competed in ANF2 for a while, and also had a go at F5000...

But he was Australian Hillclimb Champion at least one year in the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties... and he's going for the 2000s, I suspect.

I believe Tony Marsh has a GTD 40 replicar with a Twin Turbo Rover V8 that he uses for sprints, eg Brighton.
