While perhaps a duplication of effort compared to "On This Day" thread, but perhaps just a well wishing appreviated version of it.
Also getting ahead of myself as it's only December 31, but New Years Eve and New Years Day are going to be extroadinarily busy for me.... On this the first day of 2004, I would like to wish the following a very special happy birthday. Arguably sports car racings greatest name, Belgian Jacky Ickx, turns 59 today. (1945) Hungarian, Zsolt Baumgertner, turns 23 today, and will shortly receive a Minardi PS04 Cosworth for a present. Not a bad gift... (1981) The Frenchman Jean-Marc Gounon today celebrates 41. (1963) Germany's Hans-Joachim Stuck is 53 today and is probably still racing BMWs somewhere. (1951) The mysterious monikered 'Gimax', Italian Carlo Franchi is 66 today. If that is his real birthday. (1938) British Group N Rallyist, Nial McShea is 31. (1973) NASCARs Scott Riggs is 33 (1971) French rally driver, Francois Chatriot is 52 (1952) Australian Peugeot touring car racer Mike Fitzgerald is 49 (1955) And Tasmanian touring car driver, Dean Crosswell will be 33. (1971) A happy one to you all. EDIT: After a chat with Richard/rdrcr he has kindly lent me his dates that I do not have, cheers very much kind sir, and thank you all who have posted on his, and also on Jim Thurmans thread. Here follows the additional dates with attributed author. 1928, Sportscar racer James R. "Hap" Sharp born. rdrcr |

Well ... I found Numbers of Helmut instead of Helm (which sounds more as a diminutive name for me) in many sites, entry lists and results, from various origins...
Does Anybody can cut this for Herr GLÖCKLER ?? BTW January 12 1972 Toto WOLFF was born followed on the 13th by Alexei VASILIEV (Both in FIA Gt) |

Does Anybody can cut this for Herr GLÖCKLER ?? In his 1992 book "Motorsport in Deutschland 1945 - 1955" Reinald Schumann wrote this: Zur Klärung der Zusammenhänge müssen hier noch ein paar Worte über die Glöcklers aus Frankfurt am Main eingeschoben werden. (...) In brief: Helm was the son of Wilhelm Glöckler (- spot the origin of the unusual name "Helm"? -), who was the brother of Walter Glöckler. Walter Glöckler, Helm's uncle, raced pre-WW2 until the early 1950's, too.
PS. I hope Schumann got it right because AFAIK Walter Glöckler was born on 15 December 1908 and died on 04 January 1988. This would mean he was just one month older than his nephew. |

Thanks Reinhard
My first task for this evening was to check my Schumann for that very source So you see, fvebr, it doesn't matter that Helm is usually a diminutive of Helmut, and it doesn't matter how many people jump to the conclusion that Glöckler was Helmut, and it especially doesn't matter how many websites copy wrong information |

I hesitated quite a while to join in on this thread. And I hope I will not succumb to the temptation of proof-reading every single item.;) *
But I would like to see doubtful data cleared. 09 January 1960 is one of four dates of birth of Pascal Fabre I have seen so far. The other ones are 01 Jan, 08 Jan and 27 January 1960 - at least all in the same month and all in the same year. In my book I prefer the latter (27 Jan 1960). Who can say for sure? For Rauno Aaltonen I have 17 January 1938 instead of 07 January. For Alberto Uria I have 11 July 1924 instead of 07 January. And for Narain Karthikeyan I have 14 February 1976 instead of 14 January 1977. Oh, dear! BTW: May I politely ask what is the aim of this thread? At first I thought it is intended as a way of congratulating people of some importance who are still able to celebrate their birthdays. But where are - for example - Martin Schanche (born 01 January 1945) or Mike Blanchet (01 January 1948) or Bill McGovern (02 January 1937) or Ove Andersson (03 January 1938) or Willy T. Ribbs (03 January 1956) or André Simon (05 January 1920) or Keith Greene (05 January 1938)? And then came the mentioning of Dick Rathmann... Okay, I thought, it is also for remembering the ones who are no longer with us. But then: Where are Fritz Huschke von Hanstein (born 03 January 1911) or Sammy Davis (09 January 1887) or Gioacchino Colombo (09 January 1903)? If the aim is to name birth dates of all motorsport people - living or dead, important or marginal - then this thread will grow considerably. In my records I have more than 150 persons whose birthdays are or were in the year's first two weeks... Don't get me wrong. These remarks are not intended to be disrespectful. It's only that I would love to know which sort of contribution is welcome. EDIT (more than one year later) : * Well, eventually I did. : From my own notes and thanks to contributions from many people (Falcadore, Richie Jenkins, Jim Thurman and others) I produced the following lists: 22 December – 20 January, 21 January – 19 February, 20 February – 20 March, 21 March – 20 April, 21 April – 20 May, 21 May – 21 June, 22 June – 22 July, 23 July – 23 August, 24 August – 23 September, 24 September – 23 October, 24 October – 22 November, 23 November – 21 December This post has been edited by ReWind: Sep 18 2009, 17:43 |

The aim is to impart a little knowledge if only slightly relevant but of an upbeat nature, and remember those who have gone before.
I doubt very much that whatever you have in mind would be unwelcome. Post away! I must say I had Jan 17 for Aaltonen as well. I can't claim to have the records of everyone who has ever been born, I can only contribute what I have. If they don't appear here the omission is from lack of knowledge, not from editting. I'm not that big on all this motive stuff. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. Originally posted by ReWind

Having a health enforced sabbatical from competition, Richard Burns can celebrate his 33rd birthday today (1971). While like Stefano Fabi a few days ago, we have another young hot shot celebrating his 21st. He won the Gold Star of Australias Champion Driver while still a teenager and when 20 became the youngest ever winner of Australias Greatest Motor Race, at Bathurst last year. Today, Rick Kelly is 21 (1983). Porsche racer Gabriele Lancieri is 29 today (1975). Finnish rally star, and well versed exponent of the Mini, Rauno Aaltonen is 66 years young today (1938). I think. The man who is still trying to become Australias oldest driver, but it still waiting for Murray Carter to retire, Sports Sedan legend, Bryan Thomson is 69 (1935) 80's Ozzie touring car Holden runner, and today front running Historic Touring Car racer, Greg Toepfer, is 53 (1951) Rally driver, Salvador Canellas, is 30, (1974) |

January 18 Mexico's beloved and missed Pedro Rodriguez would have been 64 today. Pedro917 - Can you confirm that Pedro's as well as Ricardo's full surname was in fact Rodriguez de la Vega or is this a misinterpretation of the inscription? |

Hello Rewind,
The "de la Vega" part is the family name of Pedro's mother. Her first name was Concepcion (Conchita). Her life was full of tragedy, loosing 3 sons and when Mexico City was struck by that big earthquake in September 1985, her apartment collapsed and she died from the injuries 2 weeks later. Thanks for the link, I didn't know Peter used my pictures for this great website. In fact, these pictures were taken on 11 July 1978, exactly seven years after Pedro died. The roses are mine and they were put there by Pedro's mother. I met her there and she was accompanied by her daughter (Pedro & Ricardo's sister). It was a very emotional moment for me because on the day he died, I'd promised myself that one day, I would go to Mexico City to put flowers on his grave. Why? He was my hero and had given me a flower from his wreath after winning the Spa 1000kms race of 1971, I was 16 then and had witnessed my very first motor race. |
