Also getting ahead of myself as it's only December 31, but New Years Eve and New Years Day are going to be extroadinarily busy for me....

Arguably sports car racings greatest name, Belgian Jacky Ickx, turns 59 today. (1945)

Hungarian, Zsolt Baumgertner, turns 23 today, and will shortly receive a Minardi PS04 Cosworth for a present. Not a bad gift... (1981)

The Frenchman Jean-Marc Gounon today celebrates 41. (1963)

Germany's Hans-Joachim Stuck is 53 today and is probably still racing BMWs somewhere. (1951)

The mysterious monikered 'Gimax', Italian Carlo Franchi is 66 today. If that is his real birthday. (1938)

British Group N Rallyist, Nial McShea is 31. (1973)

NASCARs Scott Riggs is 33 (1971)

French rally driver, Francois Chatriot is 52 (1952)

I've heard or read nothing of the sort but I do know that Jean-Denis Deletraz (same era, first part of name) retired for good in 2003. Third after Stage 4, sixth after Stage 5, at the time of writing the dual World Rally Champion has passed the second Checkpoint of Stage 6 heading for Tan-Tan.

Former Formula 3000 regular and reigning Spanish Formula 3 Champion, Ricardo Mauricio (1979), turns 25 today. Mauricio is trying to put together a budget to push back up further the open wheel ladder system for '04 but has not announced any plans yet.

I don't know exactly what "cut this" means but I definitely can say his given name was HELM and nothing else.

In his 1992 book "Motorsport in Deutschland 1945 - 1955" Reinald Schumann wrote this:

Zur Klärung der Zusammenhänge müssen hier noch ein paar Worte über die Glöcklers aus Frankfurt am Main eingeschoben werden. (...) Walter Glöckler war der Sohn des Gründers des heutigen bekannten Autohauses in Frankfurt namens Otto Glöckler und war bereits vor dem Krieg als Motorsportler aktiv (...). Walters Bruder hieß Wilhelm, und dessen Sohn wiederum hieß Helm. Er war also Walters Neffe. Sein Name war tatsächlich Helm und nicht etwa Helmut, wie er damals in der Motorsportpresse fälschlicherweise häufig genannt wurde. Der heutige Firmenchef, Otto Glöckler, ist Walters Glöcklers Sohn, also Helms Vetter. Auch er hat sich im Sport betätigt, und zwar war er Motorboot-Europameister der Klasse DU.

In brief: Helm was the son of Wilhelm Glöckler (- spot the origin of the unusual name "Helm"? -), who was the brother of Walter Glöckler. Walter Glöckler, Helm's uncle, raced pre-WW2 until the early 1950's, too.

PS. I hope Schumann got it right because AFAIK Walter Glöckler was born on 15 December 1908 and died on 04 January 1988. This would mean he was just one month older than his nephew. Obviously his brother Wilhelm must have been much older than him.

But I would like to see doubtful data cleared.

09 January 1960 is one of four dates of birth of Pascal Fabre I have seen so far. The other ones are 01 Jan, 08 Jan and 27 January 1960 - at least all in the same month and all in the same year. In my book I prefer the latter (27 Jan 1960). Who can say for sure?

For Rauno Aaltonen I have 17 January 1938 instead of 07 January.

For Alberto Uria I have 11 July 1924 instead of 07 January.

And for Narain Karthikeyan I have 14 February 1976 instead of 14 January 1977.

At first I thought it is intended as a way of congratulating people of some importance who are still able to celebrate their birthdays. But where are - for example - Martin Schanche (born 01 January 1945) or Mike Blanchet (01 January 1948) or Bill McGovern (02 January 1937) or Ove Andersson (03 January 1938) or Willy T. Ribbs (03 January 1956) or André Simon (05 January 1920) or Keith Greene (05 January 1938)?

And then came the mentioning of Dick Rathmann... Okay, I thought, it is also for remembering the ones who are no longer with us.

But then: Where are Fritz Huschke von Hanstein (born 03 January 1911) or Sammy Davis (09 January 1887) or Gioacchino Colombo (09 January 1903)?

Having a health enforced sabbatical from competition, Richard Burns can celebrate his 33rd birthday today (1971).

While like Stefano Fabi a few days ago, we have another young hot shot celebrating his 21st. He won the Gold Star of Australias Champion Driver while still a teenager and when 20 became the youngest ever winner of Australias Greatest Motor Race, at Bathurst last year. Today, Rick Kelly is 21 (1983).

Porsche racer Gabriele Lancieri is 29 today (1975).

Finnish rally star, and well versed exponent of the Mini, Rauno Aaltonen is 66 years young today (1938). I think.

The man who is still trying to become Australias oldest driver, but it still waiting for Murray Carter to retire, Sports Sedan legend, Bryan Thomson is 69 (1935)

Hello Rewind,

The "de la Vega" part is the family name of Pedro's mother. Her first name was Concepcion (Conchita). Her life was full of tragedy, loosing 3 sons and when Mexico City was struck by that big earthquake in September 1985, her apartment collapsed and she died from the injuries 2 weeks later.
Thanks for the link, I didn't know Peter used my pictures for this great website. In fact, these pictures were taken on 11 July 1978, exactly seven years after Pedro died. The roses are mine and they were put there by Pedro's mother. I met her there and she was accompanied by her daughter (Pedro & Ricardo's sister). It was a very emotional moment for me because on the day he died, I'd promised myself that one day, I would go to Mexico City to put flowers on his grave. Why? He was my hero and had given me a flower from his wreath after winning the Spa 1000kms race of 1971, I was 16 then and had witnessed my very first motor race.
