This race was run to a fuel consumption formula, with strictly regulated fuel loads. Speed was not the primary objective of the organisers and a number of drivers were running so slowly to conserve petrol that they exceeded the 5pm limit to commence the last lap and were flagged off the course. This was caused in part by the very wet conditions.
Coatalen's fastest lap is a bit misleading, since his car had leaked fuel overnight and officials refused to let him refill the tank. He therefore started lighter than everyone else and went off "like a speed-boat", knowing he'd not get very far! He was twelve minutes faster than anyone else on the first (standing start) lap.
