First world championship GP at Imola was Italy GP 1980.
I know two more non championship races: Gran Premio Shell, raced on April 21, 1963 and Gran Premio Dino Ferrari, on September 16, 1979.
I have just discovered another race, 1. Coppa d'Europa F.1, scheduled on September 25, 1977. I don't know if this GP was really raced or if it was canceled; however I found it on Autosprint issued the previous week. This means that maybe this race was canceled few days before it scheduled date or it was raced and son forgotten.

I have also something to add to 1963 GP.

GRAN PREMIO SHELL F.1 - COPPA D'ORO 1963 - April 21st

Entry list (from Autosprint 38/1977 page 19):
CONCORRENTE NUMERO CONDUTTORE VETTURA

-------------------------- ------ -------------------------- ---------------------------

Ferrari S.E.F.A.C. 2 John Surtees Ferrari 1963

Ferrari S.E.F.A.C. 40 Willy Mairesse Ferrari 1963

Lotus Team 4 Jim Clark Lotus M.25 - Climax V.8 in.

Lotus Team 6 Trevor Taylor Lotus M.25 - Climax V.8

Walker Racing Team 8 Joakim Bonnier Coper Climax V.8 in.

Ecurie Filipinetti 10 Joseph Siffert Lotus - B.R.M. V.8

Ecurie Filipinetti 12 Carel Godin De Beaufort Porsche 4 cilindri in.

Ecurie Filipinetti 14 Heinz Schiller Porsche 4 cilindri

Ecurie Filipinetti 20 Giancarlo Baghetti Lotus M.11 - Climax 4 cil.

A.T.S. 16 Phil Hill A.T.S.

D.W. Racing Enterprises 18 Bob Anderson Lola - Climax V.8

Autosport Team 22 Wolfgang Seidel Lotus M.24 - B.R.M. V.8

Merlyn Racign Team 24 Teddy Pilette Lotus M.11 - Climax 4 cil.

Abate 26 Carlo Maria Abate Porsche 4 cilindri

Starrabba 28 Gaetabo Starrabba Lotus M.11 - Climax 4 cil.

Centro Sud 30 Lorenzo Bandini Cooper Maserati 4 cilindri

Centro Sud 32 Massimo Natili Cooper Maserati 4 cilindri

Schlesser 34 Jo Schlesser Brabham - Ford

Collomb 36 Bernard Collomb Cooper - Climax V.8

Prinoth 38 Ernesto Prinoth Lotus M.11 - Climax 4 cil.
I copied it from the original one (I found a photo on Autosprint). If you wonder why Lotus are named M.11, M.24 and M.25, I think that M. means Modello (= model).

This is my result, found on Autosprint 38/1977 page 17, compared to Quentin Cloud's website (and also on Autosprint 18/1984 page 58) :
  • Jim Clark (Lotus 25 BRM), 50 laps (250,850 km) 1.34'07"4 - 159.907 km/h
  • Jo Siffert (Lotus BRM) 1.35'23"8 (+ 1'16"4) (1.35'33"0 (+ 1'25"6) according to Quentin Cloud)
  • Robert Anderson (Lola Climax) +1'23"9 (1 lap according to Quentin Cloud)
  • Jo Schlesser (Brabham Ford) +1'41"2 (1 lap according to Quentin Cloud)
  • Carlo Maria Abate (Cooper Maserati) 1 lap
  • Carel Godin De Beaufort (Porsche) 2 laps (3 laps according to Quentin Cloud)
  • Jack Fairman (Porsche) 3 laps
  • Ernesto Prinoth (Lotus Climax) 9 laps
  • Trevor Taylor (Lotus Climax) 14 laps
Did not finish:
  • Bonnier (Cooper Climax) 22 laps
  • Collomb (Cooper Climax) 21 laps
  • Bandini (Cooper Maserati) 9 laps (8, according to Quentin Cloud)
  • Starrabba (Lotus Climax) 7 laps (6, according to Quentin Cloud)
Din not start:
  • Baghetti (Lotus Climax)
  • Seidel (Lotus BRM)
Fastest lap: Trevor Taylor, 24th lap, 1'48"3, 16.769 km/h

Ciao,
Guido

Let's go to 1st Coppa d'Europa (European Cup), in 1977.
The nost important question is: Was it raced or canceled?
Here following all what I know about.

1. COPPA D'EUROPA F.1 - September 25th, 1977

PROGRAM:
  • Friday, September 23:
    from 16:00 to 18:00, F.1 free practice
  • Saturday, September 24:
    from 9:00 to 12:00 F.1 qualify (1st session)
    from 15:30 to 17:30 F.1 qualify (2nd session)
from 17:45 Renault 5 Alpine qualify
  • Sunday, September 25:
    11:00: Renault 5 Alpine - 1st heat
    11:45: Renault 5 Alpine - 2nd heat
    14:00: Renault 5 kit
    14:45: Renault 5 Alpine - final
    16:00: 1st Coppa d'Europa F.1
ENTRY LIST:
Autosprint hasn't any complete entry list, because - it says - the list wasn't complete yet when they print the article, even if it was issued only a week before the race. However, temporary entry list included following drivers:
  • Eddie Cheever (Ferrari 312 T2), official team and #1
  • Bruno Giacomelli (Brabham BT45 Alfa Romeo), the same used at Monza by Watson. At first, this car could have been given to Riccardo Patrese, but when article was print this idea was abandoned.
  • Arturo Merzario (March 761), his usual one
  • Vittorio Brambilla (Surtees TS19), official team
  • Tony Trimmer (Surtees TS19), I don't know if official or private team
  • Boy Hayje (March)
  • ? (March)
  • Loris Kessel (Apollon)
  • Teddy Pilette (BRM P207)
  • Otto Stuppacher (Tyrrell 007)
  • Alessandro Pesenti Rossi? (Tyrrell 007)
  • Emilio Villota (McLaren M23)
  • Lamberto Leoni (?)
  • Maurizio Flammini (?)
  • Gianfranco Brancatelli (?)
  • Renzo Zorzi (?)
March and Tyrrell (official or private team?) still had to choose thier second driver, no possible names for March while Pesenti Rossi was quite sure to drive Tyrrell.
As regards young Italian drivers (Leoni, Flammini, Brancatelli and Zorzi), organizators were looking for some car to give them.

Besides, Giacomo Agostini and Johnny Cecotto should drive Alfa Romeo 33 SC 12 (sport car 1977 champion) in a pursuit race.

TRACK RECORD
  • Formula 1: Carlos Reutemann (Ferrari 312 T2) 1'37"113 (test, November 1976)
  • Sport 3000, official record: Arturo Merzario (Alfa Romeo 33 SC 12) 1'42"4 - 175.718 km/h (Imola 250 km, September 4, 1977)
  • Sport 3000, unofficial record: Vittorio Brambilla (Alfa Romeo 33 SC 12) 1'41"73 (practice Imola 250 km, 1977)

Guido

All the records have Niki Lauda winning the 1979 race in the Brabham BT 48. But I have a half memory of reading that it was the BT46B (The infamous fan car). Or did they run it in the Race of Champions? Does anyone else remember?

I don't think it was either, actually. Lauda definately won the '79 Imola race in a BT49, and I don't believe - although I wasn't there - that the 'fan-car' appeared at the RoC...

I'm pretty certain that the fan car only made the one appearance - Sweden 1978 and was banned thereafter by the CSI. I have no recollection of it ever appearing in another competitive race (whether championship or not).

Unlikely an F1 race was held in 1977 that we do not know about! I used to be able to buy Autosprint in London around that time, and they were always promoting F1 events at Imola, odd that they got as far as publishing a timetable, then no explanation why it did not happen?

BT48 Twinny, not the 49. Only win for the V12 Alfa ?? Also does the BT46B entry for the Donington Nilsson Trophy meeting count ?

Thanks - Donington must be what I was thinking of. I've another question but I'll go and find a fan car thread.

Back to Imola 1977 about which I haven't a clue.

Was this speculation on the part of Autosprint, or were these provisional team entries?

In the 1963 race, note that Jack Fairman was listed in 7th place, but didn't appear on the entry list. He was at Imola, as test driver to ATS, and was drafted in to the Heinz Schiller car, de Beaufort's other Porsche no 14. He told me that he practiced unaware that the Porsche was a six-speeder, and his crew called him in, wondering why he was off the pace, then to advise him that he had the use of another ratio, if he saw fit!

(+) this car should have been driven by Miguel Angel Guerra, but Copersucar (the sponsor) wanted a Brazilian driver (Guerra is from Argentina), so Ribeiro was choosen.

TRACK RECORD
  • Formula 1: Carlos Reutemann (Ferrari 312 T2) 1'37"113 (test, November 1976)

Lauda's 1979 win meant that he actually won his last race (and last Brabham-Alfa race too) before his first retirement. That isn't something that is mentioned very often.

(Plus, Lauda retired from Australia 85 in the lead, so you could say he went out on top both times)

Back to the Imola races...

Motoring News also carried a preview of the phantom 1977 race in its September 15 edition.

NEW FERRARI AT IMOLA?

Imola hosts a non-championship Formula 1 race on September 25th at which there's a strong possibility of seeing the new 1978 F1 Ferrari making its debut in the hands of Eddie Cheever. No details have been released concerning Maranello's latest F1 machine but it seems sentimentally appropriate it should make its racing debut at the Dino Ferrari autodrome.

Other provisional entries include Bruno Giacomelli in a Brabham-Alfa, Arturo Mezario in either his new car or his March 761B, Boy Hayje and TBN in the two F & S March 761s, Giarcarlo Martini (Lec), Emilio Villota (McLaren M23), Brian Henton (Boro Ensign) and Loris Kessel (Williams FW03).

I can find no mention of a result or any indication that the race was cancelled in the later editions of Motoring News. Very strange.

Milan, very interesting to see G Martini entered in the LEC, I don't remember that at all! I guess it was in the 2nd car, after Purley's big accident earlier that summer in the original. What was the connection between Martini and Purley/LEC/Mike Earle I wonder ?

Originally from Autosprint #39/1977 page 35 - ROUGH translation is mine

So IMOLA F.1 had to surrend: last Monday, while Autosprint was being printed with article about «Coppa Europa F.1 - Dino Ferrari» organizators were receiving 6 renunciation, from «private» drivers managed by Peter Gaydon plus Surtees (for Brambilla and Leoni). AC Bologna, the organizator, had only 7 cars, including a Ferrari for Cheever and - but only for practice - another one for Reutemann, so they had to give up. A "bitter" give up, as it was said in a communicate, but necessary, also for spectators: thay couldn't show them some F.2 with few F.1 cars.
We have no room today for talking about this subject as we should, not only for say again that Imola deserves F.1 (and A.C. Bologna asked hard again to CSAI to host Italy G.P. in rotation with Monza from 1978), but also to denounce responsability of who is th origin of this massive retirements, for a lack of engines and spares.
Also curious telex sent by Mr.Ecclestone after the give up, asking for "explications" deserves a special comment. Because such a person was imputend in distinguishing himself last weeks in trying to convince Mr.Ferrari to renounce to Imola, an alternative F.1 that worry him and English group bound to Cosworth

This is a very rough translation, but I think good enough to understand Autosprint article.

1. GRAN PREMIO DINO FERRARI - September 16th, 1979

TECHNICAL DETAILS:
(from Autosprint 38/1979, page 34 - sorry for my poor technical English!)

As this is a non championship races, there are many T-cars and old cars:
  • Alfa Romeo: Brambilla has the old 178, unchanged; Giacomelli has the new 179 with new details on front wing, different frow what used (and broken) at Monza. Brambilla has a 6 speeds gear box, Giacomelli 5 speeds.
  • Arrows: the old A1 with oil radiator on the front and rear horizontal suspension. It was used for the last time at Monaco GP.
  • Brabham: BT48/02 for Lauda, used at Monza as T-car and unchanged
  • Copersucar: Ribeiro has the old car, used for the last time at Great Britain GP.
  • Ferrari: 312 T4/037 for Scheckter, 312 T4/038 for Villeneuve; both with the most recent brakes
  • Lotus: 79/20 for Reutemann, used at Monza as T-car and unchanged
  • McLaren: Tambay has the old M28/3 used for the last time at Silverstone. During first test he had many problems because he was using springs suitable for the new M29. Meanwhile the new M29 are in South America with Watson, for some test (I don't know on what track).
  • Merzario: Merzario has the new A4 as usual (but with too soft springs) and the old A3 as T-car
  • Shadow: DN9/5C for Gabbiani, DN9/3B for De Angelis; both with the most recent chassis, but old suspensions in order to save the new one for championship GPs.
  • Tyrrell: 009/5 for Jarier, already used as T-car at Monza
  • Williams Team Agostini: FW06/02 for Agostini, FW06/01 for «Gimax»; the same used by official team up to USA West GP.
  • Wolf: Rosberg has the same WR8 he had at Monza as a T-car, with little change in order to solve some understeering

GRAN PREMIO CITTÀ DI BOLOGNA or DELLA RICERCA - spring 1976

(from Autosprint 10/1976, page 5; Autosprint 12/1976, page 31 and Autosprint 23/1976, page 24)

In spring 1976 a non championship GP should have been raced at Imola. In a calendar issued in February, its date was April 19th, then it was moved to May 9th. During South Africa GP there was a meeting and nearly all team managers decided not to go to Imola and Dijon (for Swiss GP, another non championship race). Only Ferrari and Max Mosley (March) still supported it, but of course it was not enough to save the race and it was canceled.
Later Ferrari tried to save it by moving it to June 20th or 27th and again to September 19th, but with no results.
