So why was Richards sent home to get more experience when he'd already done a 500-miler at Pocono. Maybe he'd never turned right before?

Thought that might have been it, but looking at the '84 CART media guide it says Hubbard had run Super Vees in '80 and '81 and had some formula car experience before that, so he wasn't a stranger to road courses. Maybe he was just too slow.

From memory, I took it on the first day the cars ran which I guess was a Friday. Aside from that I've no idea whether it was a practice or qualifying session.

1986 Indy 500 chassis #s by Hungness.
Starting cars:
One older car - Krueger`s 85C-34 (Foyt`s 1985 Indy mount).
Al Unser`s PC15 was chassis 01.
Lola T8600s: Unser jr-07,Brabham-14,Boesel-15,Simon-08,Luyendyk-05,Carter-12,Moreno-10, Mario Andretti-11.
March 86Cs: Rahal-13,Cogan-19,Mears-22,Guerrero-27,younger Andretti-17,Fittipaldi-15, Rutherford-06,Sullivan-16,Lanier-14,Gary Bettenhausen-36,Pimm-21,Garza-10,Villeneuve-03,Ganassi-24,Ongais-37,Foyt-23,Vogler-20,Snider-34,Parsons-01,Tony Bettenhausen-33,Crawford-18,Brayton-19,Sneva-31.

Qualified cars did not start(Firestone destroyed his own Lola and 2 other already qualified cars on Carb day).
Firestone: LolaT8600-06 - withdraw, because he did not have backup(actually was, but only new tub).
Dick Simon (fastest DNQr) started instead of him.
Moreno and Snider had to start from the back of the field with replacement cars(chassis listed above).
Moreno`s qualified Lola was chassis 09 and Snider`s original #84 March was chassis 08.
Mario Andretti, started from back as well ,cause he destroyed his qualified Lola complitely on may 14. (According to 86 yearbook pg 208, Bob Laycock thought it was 02 or 03).

One more addition: Ed Pimm was definitely one DNQr at Cleveland 86 - he crashed badly during practice and injured his shoulder.

Dear malvi,

You wouldn't happen to have the 1988 Lola serial numbers, do you? We are currently trying to ID a 8800 series.

Dear malvi,

Thank you for your insight! The chassis we are trying to document is Lola S/N T88.00-23. After talking to Glyn Jones, I picked up that the car was fitted with a Hewland DGBL 145 gearbox and delivered to Carl Haas (Lola Importer) on April 28, 1988.

It was someone's belief that the car was Kevin Cogan's backup, but after some record keeping, I've failed to see that.

Any light on this matter would be appreciated, as we have a car with no soul at the moment!

Respectfully Yours,

Yes agree - Boesel actually qualified in his #23 March, withdraw that car and elected to start Simon`s #22 and started at the rear of the field.

Moreno`s qualified Lola was chassis 09 and Snider`s original #84 March was chassis 08.

To be more exact - Snider`s replacement(chassis 34) was the car run throughout the may as #44 with Chevy engine. Foyt`s crew put quickly the Cosworth on and changed racing # to 84 for Snider, after original #84 was demolished in accident caused by Firestone.

I add some 1989 Indy 500 year old Lola chassis #s by Hungness.
At least you can see what your car is not...

#50 Davy Jones-20 (88 Simon`s car)
#81 Vukovich-09 (88 Sneva`s car)
#71 Heimrath jr-15 (88 Hemelgarn team`s backup)
#56 Palmroth-03 (88 Heimrath`s car)
#86 Dobson-25 (this car wasn`t run during 1988 season)
#70 John Andretti-07 (88 Granatelli team`s backup)
#7 Sneva-16 (88 Guerrero`s car)
#91 Johncock-02 (listed as 88 Heimrath`s backup but i guess it could be mistake or chassis # is wrong).

Firstly, the SEA was not the same car as Swingler's S2. The SEA was a Williams FW07 copy and it is interesting that it was built by Jackie Howerton who also built the FW07-copy Longhorns. My post above is wrong - the Longhorns pre-dated the SEA of course and the SEA would have been built about the same time as the second-generation LR02. I've asked Jeff to clarify that the 1981 Armstrong was the 1982 SEA but it's pretty clear from his email that it was. He says that the car was much-modified when it returned to Indy, with side exit radiators and a rounded nose. The last time Jeff saw the SEA it was completely dissassembled in the Armstrong shop in 1983.

Allen

Hello

Yet more on these cars, this time from the expert on the subject: Peter Swingler.

We got it mostly right. The SEA 01 (aka Armstrong) was built for 1981 as a redesign of the Orbitor. In the end, it shared only the steering box and the master cylinder. One car was built and raced during 1981. It was highly modified for 1982 with new rear suspension, nose and tunnels. After the 1982 500, a second SEA was built using the spare tub.

The Swingler was a project Peter did for Gary Irwin and is a quite different car to the SEA. Mahler then bought that car and renamed it the Lion and had a half-hearted stab at Indy in 1983 with it.

Both these cars were designed by Peter and built by Jackie Howerton, as Jeff had said.

Peter gave me the full history of both cars and I'll incorporate these into web pages on the cars as the Indy area of my website grows. It's good to be able to get the full details of these lesser-known cars.

Yes, 1986 DC1 was the same Lola T800, Coyne drove in 1985(bought from Newman-Haas). Coyne and chief mech Bernie Myers designed new sidepods, wings and rear bodywork around the Chevy engine and called the "new" car DC1. Tub and all suspension were still from 84 Lola.

One mistake I`ve spotted: 1986 Milwaukee I #59 DNQ - should be Mike Nish. (Miaskiewicz on your site)

Herbert is right...
From ICR magazine (nov 85), Sanair report:
"Making his first racing appeareance in Canada since winning at Mosport in 1977 was AJ Foyt. Driving a Lola T900 he had repossessed from the failed Kapsreiter Beer team, Foyt enjoyed the challenge of the little track."

Yes, this should be typo in Hungness yearbook - appearing twice: "The field" section-pg 98(Cogan) and pg 126 (Brayton) both Marches are -19 and chassis # section - pg 208 the same as well.
I do not know what is correct. Maybe somebody can help?

The car seen at Fontana had a standard air cooled 911 engine with a single turbo and ran slow laps. The restoration was OK (low bucks, not great), but none of the "correct" mechanical components from the original test mule was present. Now that was 2 years ago, and Lord knows what happened since.
Of course the original 2.6-liter "Indy" engines have long gone back to Germany and it is doubtful that they even exist any longer.
So asking half a mil for what amounts to be one of two test cars with an American chassis originally built for a Cosworth V8 is may be a bit over the top, like, falling off the planet when it was still flat. :)

Simply the 1972-74 Vel's-Parnelli Indy car designer, Maurice Philippe, out for a spin in his own creation. This is why I asked for a picture of him to make sure, because I did not quite remember his face. Now I do.

Josele Garza of Mexico City and Geoffry Brabham of Australia will be making their debuts in Indy-type cars in the Kraco 150, as will car owner David Psachie an aircraft broker in Santa Ana ,California.Psachie is serious about his first venture in the CART championship series. Some 1983 and 1984 corrections.
Chip Ganassi drove his STP Oil Treatment sponsored Wildcat Mk 9B under racing #20 in the end of 1983 season (I`m 100% sure about Vegas, Laguna Seca & season closer Phoenix and most likely also at Michigan II- i didn`t saw image yet). By Harms he drove #60 but it`s not correct.

In 1984 Machinists Union racing team has been cut to a one-car effort for Josele Garza (#55)who brought Schaefer Beer sponsorship to the team. Roger Mears finally parted MU(fired) during Indy 500. Team started year with pair of PC10s but 2 years old machine was already outdated and team switched to March 84C at Indianapolis. The team cars were wrenched firstly by Bevan Weston and in the second half of season by Mark Bridges.

Car #59(Parsons/Karl/Lewis/Kuhn) entrant throughout the 84 season was McCray Racing owned by Joel F. McCray. This team started the year also with PC10...
Posted Image
Parsons at Indy
Image from Hungness 84
... and swiched to year old March in mid-season.
Image in Mark Windecker`s superb site (Kuhn)
http://mwphoto.smugm...263267/Original
McCray`s chief mechanic was Roger Beck who worked for the team also in 1983(Krueger-car #46).
Both teams based at Indianapolis and probably McCray`s team got some sort of help from Machinist Union?? At least car name sometimes listed as AGFA/Machinists.

I'd like to add some information provided by GoKartMozart:

The #91 Eagle that debuted at Indy with Teddy Pilette, and then was raced at Milwaukee by Clark Templeman Jr, Milwaukee II by Steve Krisiloff, and Pocono II by Steve Krisiloff was Eagle #7207, which was a former Sugaripe Prune Juice Special.

Picture One is the Lotus F1 test at Indy in the fall of 1962. The car is a Type 25 with the 1.5-liter Climax V8. Jimmy is at the right of the picture.

Picture Two is a Firestone tire test by Hall and the Chaparral 2A in the summer of 1965, after the Road-America race.

Picture Three: this car was just sold to the same person who is now restoring my two 1972 Eagles, 7229 and 7230.
The car is very original and basically as last raced, still in those colors.

Buddy Lazier`s car #at Indy 1989 was 35 - in honour of his father Bob who drove at Indy 1981 under this number and actually bought this car for son.

I can add also another DNQ from Meadowlands 1984 - Randy Lewis tried to qualify there with first time AGFA sponsored, McCray owned, year old March but non delivery of imported gears cost him critical practice time and prevented qualification. My source is 84 Laguna Seca program where is story about Lewis & AGFA (Randy was local guy from Hillsborough). Also at Cleveland, with 38 (sic!!!) drivers attempting to qualify, he was only qualifier with 1983 machine(Ferguson & McRae added later to field under promoter`s option).

Lewis in 1984 - but hard to say where???

Also Stan Fox at Pocono 1984 definitely drove 83 March(Pabst/Leader Card) ,like he whole season did.

Lewis' only race that year with AGFA sponsorship was at Cleveland, but Cleveland doesn't have any guardrails, so if that is him I'd say it's in testing somewhere. Mid-Ohio perhaps?

Could it be a picture from Elkhart Lake where Lewis failed to qualify?

That's a possibility, although according to Phil Harms' stats, the sponsor on Lewis' car was from McCray Plastering instead of AGFA.

According to ICR mags(Aug/Oct 1984) This McCray M83C was bought from Bill Alsup after Indy 500 who still "was waiting for his refurbished Argo JM15 to arrive from England".
So this car should be March M83C-19 - ex 1983 Galles Racing , Al Unser Jr used instead of his Eagle
at Milwaukee and Pocono.

By entry list Brabham`s #54 PC7 was sponsored by Kraco Car Stereo and Garza`s #55 PC7 car name was Banco Mercantil De Monterey/SA Martin Jet Sales

This photo could be taken at the 1981 Phoenix race (or 1980, but looks like a qualifying pic)

After little research I`m almost 100% sure about ICR magazine`s & Mr Harms little typo - the driver attempted to qualify at Cleveland 1984 was Barry(instead Harry) Ruble - sprint car veteran from Burton, Ohio.(it might be explanation to his attempt to qualify on his home track at Cleveland)
His name already appears in 1983 Mid-Ohio entry list - #65 Barry Ruble,Burton,OH, Luxury Racers,Kingfish-Chevy.(I do not know was he actually on track there or not). But if i am right, this driver is active still now(check Google) and should be this guy...

In the second case, it might be self-explanatory? :rotfl:

OK, I will go to my room now. :)
