What an impressive body of work has been posted on this board. Thanks for creating this, Anders, even if you missed out on being number 3000. I ended up as number 50000 on a drag racing board that I was a part of here ... and it really wasn't as big a deal as I would have thought. No prizes, a parade, or nothin' ...
Ok, going to put a couple of more of these scans up. I am trying to make sure that these haven't been up before here, and apologize if I duplicate anything.
This is another Allington illustration of the Lotus-engined Ford Cortina. I pulled it from Sports Car Graphic, March or 1963 ... for reference.

This is one that I know has been up previously. I had a stat neg shot from one of the Shell posters, and scanned it in, then downsized it to send out. Should be a fairly clean rendition of one of my favorite James Allington illustrations; the Ford Mk. IV.

This is another repeat of one of the Shell Allington posters; the Chaparral coupe.

This is not an A.J. Foyt's car. This is the drawing of the car in which Eddie Sachs had that fatal accident that year 1964. It is a Shrike-Ford
Not to badmouth you but putting the reords straight OK?
Foyt drove a Watson-Offy that year and won the race with it.

It does say Shrike in the drawing doesn't it ? I suppose you didn't know Ted Hallibrand named all his cars Shrikes

Also nowhere was it stated that this was the car Foyt raced in the 500, an Indy racer is just that, it doesn't have to be a 500 racer

As for badmouthing that may be a choice of words, it would be a bad choice in reality

Have a bunch of these things already pieced together but need to make sure to clean them up and patch them together before I send them. The first three hadn't been completed, but a little playing around with these to connect the pieces is pretty decent. Not sure whether I would rather have the half-page one-piece versions or the two-piece full spread that has to be put together.
I think my least favorite deal are the ones with the color background added. The imprecise cutting of the background, and the horrid registration of the printing make them a real pain. I have tried to take out the color, and to smooth them out as much as possible, but some are fairly tough. You will see that when you get some of the Gordon Bruce and Clarence LaTourette pieces.
Glad you like them ... and I assume you were talking about my stuff there, since I had done the Cortina ...

You had me confused there for a moment, Marc, but Tom worked it out!

Tom, could you down-size a little, I'm only getting 3/4 of the illustration on my screen! I did some bits and pieces on the Shell cutaways - a tour de force by Jim, and many hours overtime for us both. After the cutaway of the Lotus Cortina we did the illustrations for the Workshop Manual, and that in turn got us quite a lot of work from FoMoCo UK. In fact Jim was doing parts list drawings for them for many years, probably untill he had his stroke.

Stuff like that tends to fall by the side, but it certainly is helpful to find things once it gets this detailed and with this much material to dig through. No, I'm talking about just opening the page of the forum, for some reason the previous scans that you posted are screen-fillers and more! It's nice to know that you are such a fan of Jim Allington, I have hardly any prints of his work, even though I worked for him for nearly ten years, and I missed the auction of his collection, or I would have bid for some. What I would have liked most was a cutaway of a four-cylinder Coventry Climax and transaxle, the drawing he was finishing when I first met him, and what inspired me to become an illustrator!

I have copies of 74 James Allington cutaways in my collection. Of course, locating them to scan isn't always the easiest thing to pull off. Will see if I can find something on that Climax 4 if it is in there. Might be a pretty small rendition.
Not quite sure about the sizing. The ones that I have posted on my own drawings are all down to a 15-inch image at 72dpi, I believe. The ones that I am pulling up from the collection are going out as 2000 pixel images, so they are a bit larger than the others. I think that the illustrations need that extra resolution to show well, and the smaller ones were just what I had on my harddrive for my own "sample" work.
Those links should allow you to pull the files off as files a little easier, so maybe I will include both, if it isn't interfering with anyone else's reception of the illustrations.
Can I assume that you have posted files on all of your own work here? I am listing 90 illustrations of yours in my collection, so was just wondering how close that was to covering most of them. Haven't crosschecked to compare to the things posted on this Board, however.
I need to update this thing using the material sent out here, as there are quite a few artists that are going to pop way up in numbers of illustrations, I have a feeling.

Just checking in quickly this morning before getting out of here to spend the day with my daughter. Have to open up the listing and check to see what is in there, but I am not sure I have that assembly of the Climax Hewland setup. Will check again. I seem to remember something of an XK-E drawing being in there somewhere. Will try to check later this evening for you.

There was a question about the E-Type, of which I have a copy as a small tech poster. Hve to dig it out, but think I know where it is. Will scan it when I get a chance.
To fill in the details ... after having been in the same house since 1984, and having the office since about 1987, I have moved all of that stuff, flat files, magazine boxes, etc., so things are not quite as retrievable as they were at one point.
Will get it on the radar list.

No Tom, it's a Grand Prix Car type of set-up.

I used to have something in the 30-35 range of subscriptions coming in to the house every month. I kept them in the magazine files, in order, and all that anal retentive stuff that we tend to do. It came time to start thinking about condensing a bit, so, after cleaning out all the cutaways in those magazines, I ended up throwing them all into a dumpster that I had brought from the city. I would have been out there under the street light that night, except that it was raining that day, for the first time in six months, and probably for the last time for a further six. Without that release process, I would still be obsessing over what I might have tossed that day. And, it completely filled the gondola; I was surprised, after seeing what 25 years of American car magazines looks like, that it hadn't collapsed the roof over the second floor.
I still have boxes of the stuff, but it is all now related to cutaways, as I figured I would prioritize down to what was important ... it is important, isn't it???
Scanning through this stuff now, after doing all of the "hot Rod" related material previously, brings it all back again. Will make sure to get everything done that I can, especially the larger stuff from the Allington and Matthews collection. You guys have been doing some nice archive stuff, being so large, so will try to stay with you on this stuff.

With that in mind, I include here the James Allington version of the 1962 Lola Climax V8 Formula 1 car. I found it as part of an F1 review in Car & Driver, May, 1962.

Ouuuuuu...Ahhhhhhhh.......These morsels are exceptional savory Tony. What I particularly like is the absence of black line to define the drawing. Since I learned from Dave Kimble, the black line image of the inking becomes part of the final rendering. Until I converted over to digital illustration, I hadn't really realised just how important those lines were. When I shut off the line layer image in Photoshop of a painting, the color work looks like hell! It's depressing to look at and makes me want to better develope my rendering skills.

Hi Tom - that was one of the first things you mentioned to me when we first made contact, some time ago. You had assumed from the MS article that I was working in the same way as Mr Kimble, but there were no black lines! To me the lines should not be seen, although I really admire your work, it's just a different approach. In fact, in some instances, in some printing conditions I think the lines help to hold the detail together.

Jim Allington coloured some of his cutaways, and he used paint on board, but he 'filled in' existing linework, ending up with a result not far from your technique, but not as neat. It surprised me that he used this method, as there was a photograph in his studio of him in RAF uniform, sitting cross-legged, cap on the ground infront of him, between two oil paintings, one of a horse! I don't know why he didn't adapt his painting skills to the cutaways, but it isn't something we ever discussed. My first colour cutaways were also more like coloured drawings, but I decided to bite the bullet and try pure colour and see what happened - and stuck with it. I don't think there is a 'right' way, just differences of choice in working practice and final result.

Edited to say that I've just noted that the detail from the Ilmor 500I cutaway is unfinished, the paint is missing from the bottom of the pressure-relief valve bore - this must be from an early transparency, as this is how it is reproduced in Karl Ludvigsen's book, but the artwork - I've just checked - is complete! Bit embarrassing.

I don't want to start a whole new topic for this one question, but I was wondering what the wheelbase of a Porsche 908/3 is. I was doing a quick comparison of a Ferrari 312 PB to a 908/3 on a diecast website, and everything I found while googling said it was 90.6"/2300 mm, the same as a 917K. Since I always understood that the whole purpose of the 908/3 was to negotiate tighter race tracks, this just doesn't make sense.

I though one of you highly intelligent Porsche fans might know. Sorry, I don't mean to hi-jack this thread.

I was working for Jim at the time they were drawn, but didn't contribute a single line or dot - my 'influence' was to change the way the tyre side-walls were stippled. I can't remember which cutaway it was, but having been given the task of stippling the tyres I took my courage in both hands and asked if I could try a different approach.

As there was no panic to finish the drawing and if I failed the stippling could be erased, Jim gave me the nod. I'd been studying the lighting on tyres in photographs and in real life, and noticed that the darkest area was an ellipse that ran eccentric to the tyre, from the contact point with the road to the top of the wheel rim. When Jim saw what I had done he immediately adopted it, much to my relief! I used exactly the same shading when I started with colour.

Thanks for the comments. That is really great coming from you two, especially ... not to disregard anyone else in the group. Those files that I posted are something like half the size of what I have as the assembled files. I have been saving those at something like 11x17 (or whatever would fit there) at 300 dpi. Just don't look too closely where I had to fill in the gutters that they trimmed out of the drawings at the page breaks ... wouldn't have wanted to layout things to get them in the centerspread or anything ...
Of course, I am having to piece them anyway, as the scanner won't do larger than 8-1/2x11.
Stippling is an interesting subject for me, as one of the worst sections of a drawing that I ever did (not that they were all that great) was attempting to stipple a tire, but without using ink. Obviously, you can't really get a dot out of a pencil unless you are all but stabbing through the surface, and since I am drawing on mylar, it would have had to be with carbon bullets or something. I ended up doing the stippling that turned into hashmarks ... making the tire look like a chia pet or something ... looked like it needed a shave, at least.
I finally cleaned it out so that it is out of my drawing now that I have been able to get it into digital form.
Now, the irony of the situation is that my sister, who has never done any artwork whatsoever, did two stipple-art illustrations of babies when she was in high school. Did a hell of a job, and then decided that they were too much work and never did another. Drives me crazy that she could do that, and I couldn't ... and I do this crazy stuff and she can't figure that out.
Anyway, I guess I will have to check out Tony's technique more and see if I can do it, although I have been cutting through the top of the tires now so the shading doesn't really work with my style.

Stipple. It should look as sharp and black as your scans of JA's drawings Tom, but if I scan it in B&W all I get is moire patterns, so it's a grey-scale scan. We used to have a feeble joke, probably not confined to Jim's studio - "All that stippling will drive you dotty!" I rather wish I hadn't revealed that...



Another attempt at a B&W scan - the print that I scanned is only 4 7/16" - 116mm wide, so it's asking a lot of the scanner I suppose. The actual print is somewhere between the two, as detailed or more as the grey-scale scan, as black as the second. Done in 1964.

Those things are great, but I have been involved in the modelkit and diecast business for many years. Haven't done that many kit designs, but have tended to be fairly unlimited in what I was able to do.
Sort of like being a perpetual 13 year old ... and don't get paid that much to do it now either ...

Going to put up another Allington engine illustration here, this being the Lotus Cortina DOHC 4 from 1963 or so. It is a little muddy since it was originally printed with a background in color behind it, so it tended to clog a bit.

OK, just to give the eyes a break from the strain of studying those detailed Allington illustrations, I am going to step back and put up a couple of my early pieces. This one is probably the first national level car that I ever got a chance to illustrate. I was blown away by the fact that Gene Snow would consider working with me back then, but he was great, and we still talk every once in a while at a race or something. He was part of the big Revell Drag Racing program in the early 70s, so became a real household name here at that point. This is his first real dominant flip-top Funny Car, a Keith Black-engined Full-sized Dodge Charger.

I would think the writing is not the work of James (for whom I used to fabricate odds and sods for his various projects - all were neatly sketched and sadly all drawings then thrown away!) because thats a dry sump oil tank!

Last one for the day here ...
This is a Corvette Roadster Funny car that was among the best looking cars of its time ... that whole candy red and gold leaf lettering thing that was a signature look back then. Marv Eldridge ran a company called Fiberglass Trends, and was among the top manufacturers of funny car and other fiberglass components in the late 60s. This was probably his most successful and best known car, until they banned the roadsters in the class. He had to switch to a coupe body, and literally ran into the guard rail against my leg one night while I was shooting trackside stuff ... sorry for the irrelevance there.
He ended up getting killed test driving a car for some guy in Hawaii ... but without wearing helmets or belts for some reason. Anyway, this was a pretty standard setup for one of these cars, and the flat angle was based on the fact that we photographed it at his shop, and things were so loaded up that all I could do was back it out in the alley behind the shop ... this was the most interesting photo angle I could come up with.

I am sure that you are correct, Simon. Have a feeling that was added at the publication, as they liked to do that type of thing instead of presuming the reader was, well, actually reading the article to figure out what was in the car.

Jim's illustrations were never released with annotation, that was up to the publication. However, if you don't do it yourself you cannot rely on some non-technical hack getting it right. If I thought that an illustration was going to be annotated - and this tended to happen mostly in the 'popular' press - I would include a rough print with labelling as a guide. Still couldn't guarantee accuracy, though! Best way, as I did with the Marlboro exploded drawings, was to do it yourself, complete with key, written in American.

TW, your posted JA illustrations are still coming up 1½ screens wide...nice, but awkward.
