Marc, I only get a red cross in a box. Any chance of reposting the 540K, or e mailing it direct?
Roger

So am I, but like all of Giorgio's red crosses it looks very much like one of Bruno's.

Ooops! There it is!

Yes Tony, but any thoughts on who crosses his crosses left to right and who right to left ?
I think we should be told !

Ah, the secret held close to the Betti bosom! Who is Betty Bosom? Sounds like a McGill 'naughty postcard' character! I may have to breathe life into her ample body...Betty, y'all ready for this? "Oooh, Tone, you naughty boy!"

Silly me! I've just remembered that Betty Bosom is Gwendolyn's long-time home help and confidante. Only met her once, as Gwendolyn is paranoid about a) losing Betty to another houshold, and b) Betty spilling the beans about Gwendolyn's colourful and on-going dalliances. If I hear anything I'll let you know. Cutawayland may never be the same again...

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, so please don't ask me to read 150 pages of posts, though they must be fascinating.
I just wanted to add that I used to be a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. I mention it only because their Journal was always full of how the copyright always belongs to the original artist. The publisher pays for the sole rights to publish and use the artwork, the original of which HAS to be kept by the artist (or company for whom he worked when the art was done).
We used to have to keep thousands of drawings we did for Ford, each covered by a piece of tracing paper then a folder of green card with our logo on it and the Ford code number which could always be found on the small prints in the finished manual's pages.

Another thing you might be interested in was that the original artwork for the Ford Probe concept car which became the Sierra was once displayed in the foyer of Dunton R&D office building. It was huge! And we would study it for mistakes whilst waiting for our contact to come and get us. Maybe they weren't mistakes as such, but good grief that thing was rough! It was covered in Tippex, scratchings out, you name it, but when placed on a rack camera and reduced to one page size in Motor magazine or whatever mag. it appeared in it looked fantastically crisp. I think it was Terry Collins.
I once had to repair one of his smaller ones of a Ford Dover diesel engine. Repairing graduated felt pen (Terry's style) with an airbrush (all we had) is NOT easy!! Took me all night.
My claim to fame? Did all the climate control see-throughs for the RS200 dashboard. I still have the initial visuals somewhere.

Happy days,
Sixlover

I believe that is one of half-a-dozen reproduced in 'Automobile Year' some time ago - I can't check 'cos I gave all mine away. It featured engines from several decades, and included amongst others the BRM V16. None, as far as I can remember, had the illustrator's names under the artwork, but may have been listed in the accompanying article. However, they were all coloured in the same fashion, obviously added to original B&W artwork. This could well be Vic Berris.

Lamborghini Diablo by David Kimble, from the "Motor Trend's 1991 David Kimble Cutaway Calendar"

Posted Image

Ibsen, thanks so very much for the Diablo. More please if you could sir, possibly Kimble's Countach or early Viper R/T10. I'm in the process of trying to find all of his work that appeared in Automobile Quarterly. So far have come up with.
volume 21 number 4; Miller front wheel drive
volume 22 number 3; 427 Cobra S/C
volume 23 number 1; Cadillac 16 Dual Cowl Phaeton
volume 23 number 4; Model J Dusenberg
volume 24 number 1; Mercedes 540K
volume 28 number 2; Buick Reatta
Along the way found some of Inomoto's work that he did for Automobile Quarterly, these are pen and ink monochromatic.
volume 6 number 2; Toyota 2000GT, this may have been his first work for AQ
volume 8 number 4; Allard J2X
I have yet to pay more than $11 for a volume.

You may find this site of interest. It has an absolutely great selection of car brochures, including some with Kimble's work. Seems to be mostly in the 90's Chevrolet, Ford and Cadillac. Cautionary bit of info, the Ad guys didn't seem to mind cutting bits of the drawings out if they crossed 2 pages so you end with maybe 95% of what was originally there. Oh ya, Porsche did put out a sales brochure for the 917 upon introduction, including price.

Hi sl, so very disappointing that you feel the previous pages aren't worth reading, but the thread has a life of it's own, and I would find it hard going to read the lot, although I do dip into it at random sometimes, out of curiosity! Fascinating to hear about TC's felt-tips, he had a distinctive, slick style, and of course, if the artwork is going to be heavily reduced, you can get away with murder full-size. I always woirked on the assumption that the original might end up 'gracing' someone's wall, quite possibly an important someone - but also, I get no pleasure from doing anything to a lower standard than I can manage, allowing for deadlines and cost!

Interesting about copyright, too. However, the internet has rather blown everything apart, with no-one being traced and prosecuted for breach of copyright in this area - I don't mind if I post a sample of work that is a) not my copyright and b) I've been paid for - it doesn't hurt me, but if it is my copyright and I hope to make money out of it, well, that's a different tube of gouache!

Nearly bought an RS200, but then sat in one that was on display in TriMoCo's Dunstable showroom and couldn't operate any of the ccontrols, none of the pedals, the steering wheel or the gear-lever, it was built for midgets. It looked the dog's doodads, though!

Hi Tony, oh no, I didn't wish to suggest I didn't think the thread worth looking at, only that late at night when I found it, I really couldn't go through it from the beginning. I also wanted to effectively apologise if I doubled up somewhere. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I WILL get through it all, eventually, but my connection is SLOW. However the long winter nights are coming too quickly for comfort!

I did go back to the very beginning and found Andrew Kitson's posts. Boy, did that jolt the memory card! I still live in the Wisbech area and did once join that course at Isle College part time, to learn how to use a paint brush. The tutor seemed amused but very helpful to me. I could illustrate alright and airbrush, etc. I knew all the then current techniques, but I'd never pushed a sable round a page and felt a few weeks of tuition there might help. I didn't realise that at that time Bob Freeman had been there and done that with his wonderful pencil and brush style, which I still see as the finest expression of technical illustration as almost an entertainment. Of course, it would be plagiarism to do anything similar.
Unfortunately I got busy suddenly and couldn't continue the course, but used the College shop for subsidised materials supplies for a few years. CS10 board, Ellipse guides, Mars Pens, (my preference) and Letratint/Letraset, Pantone pens, etc.
No doubt that faculty is all gone now.

Also found it amusing to read about English contractors abroad. I too was part of that for a time, working for Cebra Design in the wonderful Wasserburg, just outside Wolfsburg. Having an office in the tower of a 14th century lakeside castle is really something!
I was asked over to dig a friend out of the mire, who'd taken on too much work. I had a fortnight to draw and paint a large one-off illustration of the then new engine delivery plant at Salzgitter. The final painting ended up on Dr. Porsche's wall which pleased me no end.
I can't recall how many hours it took, but I was so well paid I didn't need a job back here for 6 months!

I would have loved to have stayed, but there wasn't a need after the engine plant job.

Much later I went back as part of the vast English contract mob as a clay modeller and hard modeller, starting at Wolfsburg and moving on around Europe working for anyone who would pay the pieces of silver.
I would work in Wolfsburg and dine at the Am Wasserburg restaurant opposite my old office in the castle.
One of the old guys I worked with was a millionaire purely on what he'd earned as a contractor over so many years. Of course he had a trail of unfinished houses, broken marriages and failed projects back home, but seemed to thrive on it.
Although I earned outrageous money over there as a modeller, I always wanted to get that call from Cebra Design asking me to draw again. I miss it and have started doing paintings of classic engines just to amuse myself, now the computer has retired me off.

Cheers,
Martin

I should have added a smiley, Martin - no offence meant or taken. When I stumbled upon this thread it was, I think, only five pages long, it is astonishing how it has grown, and the thought of ploughing through it from start to finish is daunting.

Edited to say that it was only two and a half pages long when I first chipped in, and it had taken two years and nine months to get that far! Ooh! What a roller-coaster ride it's been! Thanks a lot to macaron, ibsen and Tom West for so many posts, and everyone else who has found an obscure cutaway and stuck it here! I must get around to scanning the little collection of Bill Bennet stuff that I saved from the skip all those years ago, but I will have to rely on others to stich the bits together...

Well, I've got as far as page 6 this morning waiting for the gas man to call and my eyes are stinging already, which is why I could never work on computer. I also have a numb bum now.
Reading those early posts from Andrew Kitson talking about Helmstedt and being there in '89 when the wall came down really got me going as I was there at the same time. Everywhere you went there were dead Trabbies just left in ditches all round Wolfsburg with the roof rack straps hanging as "Osties" had grabbed their cases and run for the city! It was an amazing time to be in Germany.
The guys at Cebra all wanted we Brits to bring tapes of prog rock back after weekends home and we always complied, so my illustrating days in Germany were all to the background of Yes, Gong, Gentle Giant, etc., which made life great.

What a fantastic thread. My old mate in America sent me a link about two years ago, but I couldn't get accepted on the Autosport forum for some reason, so I lost it.
It would be a bit difficult quoting early posts now!
I think your humour and contribution has kept this going so well.
A humour that our delightful German hosts could never understand until we explained it to them, then they'd go home, watch the Fawlty Towers and Python videos again and come back in the next day still laughing!
If I'd known that there were illustrators "upstairs" at Volke in Wolfsburg when I was down in the clay studios I'd have been up there like a rat up a drainpipe!

On technique, when I did my Government training course (no college for me) we were taught a method of making our own perspective called the "Mini Ball grid" whereby you decided on your vanishing points and then worked backwards to achieve a level of measured foreshortening which worked very well. When doing a gearbox or the innards of a Day/night tank gunsight it was essential to be able to get shaft centres aligned.
I've still got some somewhere on some, by now, very crispy tracing paper.
Great to be reminded of the technique of transfer paper and a stylus, too.

Also your early comments about a modelmaking background are spot on. I regard all my drawings as 2D modelmaking. In fact now I can't sell a technical drawing for love or money, I'm back to modelmaking. Boats mainly, as the best computers can't make a varnished mahogany Greavette Streamliner, though I might have a bash at a cutaway of one for old time's sake.

Thanks again.

Martin

Hi Manfred, thanks for the welcome.

I doubt I could match Tony's legend. I was a jobber with a couple of fair breaks. By the time I decided to try illustrating as freelance it was all going over to computers. My old boss decided to get in on it and bought "one of these new things called an Apple Mackintosh".
He was persuaded by a somewhat dodgey friend "in town" that he shouldn't get left behind. He brought the thing back to the office and wired it up, insisting that I do the required section of a Cummins straight eight diesel on the machine. Well, try as I might for two and a half days I did get something out. It looked like a mediaeval woodcut! I spent the following afternoon doing it the proper way with a pen on board. I believe I still have a print of the woodcut somewhere.
A year later the office had been subsumed by a big car design company and the illustrators were all callow youths in lightweight suits dozing gently in a fake half light in a barn of an office. Occasionally they'd fight over who could relieve the boredom by using the one old drawing board (mine, I noticed).
They described me as a dinosaur. I explained that it took a meteorite to wipe them out, but a simple power cut would be the cat that peed on their sad matches and left a happy man to see the sun and the sniff the fresh air.
That was the sum total of my illustrating with computers!
I went back to modelmaking (3D), which in turn has now almost gone the way of the ether, with the noble exception of mahogany speedboats from the Golden era, which I now do for a crust.
So the meteorite hasn't struck yet, but I understand there's a big increase in the number of cat's looking for somewhere to pee and nobody knows how soon the lights will go out.

Meanwhile I can sit back and enjoy this thread, although I'm still only on page 14!!

Cheers,
Martin

Welcome Martin,
I am sure you will enjoy.
As an aid, Ibsen has indexed all the posted cutaways and links up to post 5879 on page 140.
Easiest way to find it by scrolling down to the bottom of the page you are on currently...you will find a box there that says "150 Pages v "
Click the little arrow, and a drop down menu "Jump to page" appears...type in 140...or any other page you want to locate...click GO, and you'll be taken straight to that page.
Then all you do is scroll down and find what you want to look for.

Now there's a coincidence! I used Jim's drawing as a base for my colour version - with his permission, and I paid him eight times what he was paid for doing the original illustration, even though he wasn't expecting payment! I went to Donington and checked their version in the museum, then basically coloured it in - I was due to go on holiday with the family, and there wasn't time to do a cutaway from scratch, so this was the only way out.

Thanks for the help, macoran and the welcome.

Nice engine the Cummins. First engine ever designed to be turbo charged and wouldn't work without it, so Ford guys told me. It had no manifolds. They were all cast in and the turbo just bolted straight onto the block, but that made the section a right royal pain to show all the cast in stuff. Interestingly it also had a camshaft that only operated injector pumps. Each injector was filled with a metered amount of fuel, then the cam came round and "squirt", it was in. Nice touch.

Time for my Horlicks now, Nursey!!

Oh well at least I got the one Ferguson P99 by him in there.

What tripped me was the aircraft link, to me the Dunlop Maxaret anti-lock system came to mind, and I linked
it to Harry Ferguson's 4wd

A nice surprise tonight, chaps.
Thanks for all the references.
I would normally have switched off by now, but the rain killed our link earlier so I'm catching up and my wife just joined facebook (oh no!!)
This thread is taking up a lot of time, but it's so good.
I'd put one of my engine paintings on, but they aren't cutaways and of limited interest as they are classic canal boat engines done as something with which to fill the evenings when we lived on our historic ex-working boat, so they were done whilst the thing was rocking and banging the bank in the wind!
Also, I haven't a clue how to put them on here.

Now, I really must away to my pit.
Thanks gents.
Cheers,
Martin

Ibsen,

Sorry to mention this because it looks so selfish since I donated the cutaway to Macoran for addition in the thread

but the 1960 Kurtis-500F Novi is missing on the list of contents, it appeared at page 148.

Henri

I don't know if anybody noticed:

The congratulations for post number 6000 goes to ibsenop with the second part of the cutaway index.

As one that can't draw. I want to thank those that do. The art, and I do mean art, in this thread is fantastic and greatly appreciated. This is the first bookmark I check and it never fails to impress and make me laugh. I love the insights into technique and to read the humor from such talented artists reminds me that they are just as twisted as myself. My only regret, that aside from thanking all of you, I do not have much to contribute. I have some cut aways in large sizes that I haven't posted. I would post them, but I am very respectful of the artist and do not think it right. A while back I created some mods for a computer game and saw them later incorporated and being sold without so much as a thank you!

DHFallio,
I'm sure the artists all appreciate your kind words.

Although I was always generally pleased with my work, I never thought of it as part of the "arts and mysteries" nonsense. I did a Government training course and was lucky to get a job immediately with the company that trained me. I was straight into doing the new Ford Cargo truck and a job for Marconi.
Then I was put on site at the Marconi factory drawing cruise missiles! How's that for a baptism of fire?!

But anyone with a bit of a feel for the pen and an engineering background or even just an interest could have done it. We were all very well taught and all got jobs. Two guys even started businesses straight out of training!

I can't speak for all illustrators, but I've always thought, "if you can do it better and quicker than me, good for you and tell me how, please". I have exactly the same feelings about modelmaking which I also do professionally. Some people want to keep it all to themselves. Pah!

Of course, neither is easy ;)

After putting all my drawing instruments away seven years ago when I went off to live on a canal boat and do very little I thought I'd never find them again. Having moved back "on the bank" I am delighted to find every item, ellipse guides, proportional dividers, flexible curves and even all the dozens of little plastic templates I used to make to draw endless wiring looms for Ford and JCB.

I now do boat drawings and they'll all be useful.

Cheers,
Martin

Just tried the image thing but got error statements about dynamic tags or some such.
So I can't put anything up.

Any ideas?

Sorry Henri,

I undestand nothing about the Novis and I put in the Index this way => Novi Ferguson by Robert Thatcher - page 148
so I tried to correct this way => Novi Ferguson 1960 (Kurtis-Novi 500F) by Robert Thatcher - page 148

Please, tell me the right way.

No. However, apart from the 'How to post your images' thread at the top of the Nostalgia Forum introduction page, if I can do it so can you. I signed up to imageshack, and although there was a step in the process that I couldn't understand, and the TNF instructions didn't help, I overcame it (thanks to Michael Ferner!) quite quickly, so if there is a step that confuses you we can help. I wrote detailed instructions for someone who was having serious problems, if I can remember where I saved them, and assuming I haven't deleted them, I will send them to you.

Martin

Go away for a few weeks and look what turns up :)

I missed the wall coming down but did a run soon after with some artwork to IGS in Helmstedt. The road between Hanover and the old border was a nightmare. Trucks and Trabbies everywhere at 3 in the morning!

As for British Comedy. Minder died a miserable death as Arthur Daley just didn't translate :drunk:

I was at Eckards "Volke" were the opposition!

Well, just got back online after a couple of days away, and am very glad to see that I ended page 149 and pushed us over to the momentous mid-second century mark, and beyond. Some interesting note here, including the comment that obviously upset everyone about the time not being worth going back to read 150 pages of stuff.
Since I did that when I started, downloading all of those images when I realized what a huge resource was being opened, it is interesting to hear something said like that. The responses have been reasonable, and the explanation worked, too.
This is one of my most often-viewed sites since I found it, and even the crazy review of the past years' worth of material was well worth it. Does take a while, doesn't it?
Will be putting more stuff up here shortly, but have to complete a modelkit design that I am working on ... American subject, so don't get too excited ...
Take care, guys.

Tom, I don't think anyone was the least bit upset about any comments - I may have missed a smiley from what was meant to be a light-hearted response to sixlover Martin, but I am assured that no offence was taken! As I said, 150 pages is pretty daunting, and takes some considerable time.

By the way, all subjects are exciting, including American...

I don't know if Volke had illustrators. They were loaded down with up to 150 Brits at any time in modelling, design, engineering and the inevitable tinnies. They were some of the most miserable devils I ever encountered. They earned almost as much as us yet their accommodation and flights were paid for and they were even lent cars. They always seemed to come from Nuneaton, or Treacle Town as we always were told to call it, just to upset them!
I had a great Scottish designer to work with called Scott Ferrier, who could design, illustrate and was a fair engineer too. Designers are not supposed to know how things work.
My speciality turned out to be mechanisms and he would always come and chat clever mechs. with me, often bringing his favourite cutaways to illustrate (sorry!) points.

I wonder where he ended up.

alansart, not sure what you meant by the go away for a few weeks comment. Am I being thick or missing something?

Maybe it's just late!
Cheers,
Martin
