Well, I've been ill, but I'm more or less better now - and apart from a week in hospital, nothing has stopped me from posting apart from lack of material except my own, and a few Bill Bennetts that I have yet to scan. The rate at which this thread has blossomed is astonishing, and everyone can be congratulated, some more than others, no doubt, but it is invidious to rank contributors.HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!!

That Neon is a pretty bad drawing when it comes to the cutaway parts...specialy the drivers seat is totaly off.
Were the Haynes covers from that time all that bad?
No matter how good the book is, I would propably not buy it because of the cover. (When the cover illustration is that bad it can't be much better inside.)

It is pretty poor. At least it's still a drawing. Current UK Haynes Manuals are a photo with a bit of the bonnet removed to show the engine and other parts showing the brakes. It wouldn't take much more work to see more of the inside of the car.

That was my attitude, but ended up spending probably an extra 25 hours modifying my first illustration for them, first adding in some details on various components that I thought would be interesting to the DIY guys, then taking almost all of it out again. They had done research that showed that the general public would think that a car was tough to work on if the cover drawing was complicated. I said that I thought they would appreciate that the inside must be complete if so much effort was put into the cover, but had to take that stuff out. Did two more pieces for them, much simpler and would have been happy to continue, but they had a deal with Kimble at the time, and I heard that his agent gave them crap about me doing the drawings. The same guy who pushed the mass-market research approach ended up banning me because he had to answer questions about them making sure they had a backup for the drawings.
Wimp!
Turned out not to be a satisfying experience for anyone involved.

I know that there is a difference in thinking and approach of things between americans and europeans when it comes to cars.
The general public are (specially in the US, sorry) idiots when it comes down to technical things*. DIY guys don't give a sh** anyway.
My brother is one of those DIY guys and he's just been rebuilding an engine (for the very first time). OK he's been using the official repair shop manual insted for an aftermarket manual.
* I know a few carsales guys and they all say that americans usually don't care about technical stuff as long as the car comes in the right colour and has enough cupholders. They also barely specify their cars. It's more like: 'I take that one over there'.

Just to make things easy, here is another file on the James Allington version of the Lotus 22 for you. You should check that wonderful Index that Ibsen puts together ... just up the page on 270 for you. Specs should be available on the Lotus site or somewhere relatively easy to find online.

There is something about these early jets that I find quite attractive, both US and UK planes. Possibly because I grew up with them, but the latest hardware has always fascinated me - I think it's just a dose of nostalgia kicking in. Thanks Tom.
