Getting caught up after being gone awhile. The Dodge van reminds me of the one my father purchased in 1967 while stationed at South Ruislip, a SWB one with the 318 V8 between the seats and three on the tree. We bought it before we took a month long tour of the continent to replace the dreadful Bedford van that couldn't get out of its own way even before one loaded it with four kids and camping gear. We were about run off the road when a lorry was passing us with opposing traffic coming that forced him back in our line before he cleared us on a trip to Land's End. Mom said we weren't going to take it on any trips after that. My father had great fun leaving the Spitfires, TRs and Jag sedans in the dust on the roundabouts, but always has problems with Cooper Ss.

I ran a Chevi Step-van (on Jersey plates; don't ask!) with a V8 on a three-speed column stickshift in Ireland from 1978 to 1980; it could blow off lots of unsuspecting Paddys and I had some great fun with it! (Pictured outside my pad in Limerick). I developed a taste for big engined vans, and some years ago in Florida, I hired a Dodge people carrier with an 8.1 litre V8; 1000 miles of some of the most fun motoring I ever had, but it was like refuelling a 747!

(Jeez, this is my 2000th post! clap.gif )

The Hartwell Imp was listed as black & white in the 1965 progs, driven by an A.D. Taylor (Anita Taylor?)
My first thought was Ray Payne though.

Tony Taylor

Thanks for the corrections on the Imp and now I look even closer it does look like a Spitfire at top left.

Hopefully Peter Bevan will confirm with me soon(via his son) if it is his A40 at top right just about to be refuelled.

Your memory is almost bloomin' bionic Glyn! I just had the names of Ginger Bevan and other A40 pilots, but could not be that specific, we need to win David's next quiz mate!!! lol.gif

Another Imp to follow the Hartwell photo, I again do not know who this is, but (complete guess!) maybe a Nathan Imp? Roger used to name them Impudence 1,2 3 etc, anybody remember this? I am sure Glyn and Andy will put the meat on the bones shortly up.gif

Photo as usual, courtesy of Robert B. in France.

Completely stumped by this one Sterling, if it is not Roger Nathan or an Emery car that Bill McGovern would have driven could it be Alan Jones (not the famous one lol.gif )
Looks as if the car is sporting BP logos so is the photo from 1968?

Over to you Andrew wave.gif

That looks pre-1968 to me. By that year, you had the 925cc supercharged Emery car, but that was yellow and black, Keith Holland's blue and white Fraser Imp. and Reg Payne's Hartwell car that was white and orange. There were lots of other chaps running Imps by then, Ed Hill, John Calvert, Bill McGovern, Richard Staveacre, Reg Hargrave, John Rice, Terry Watts, Jeff Ward, Nick Birch, Maurice Ford,Colin Henderson, Mike Freeman, Jeremy Nightingale, Bruce Waterworth, Adrian Webb, Tony Charnell, Jim Teagles, Alan Moore, Melvyn Adams, Trevor Wilcox, Jean Denton, Juhani Kynsilento entered by George Bevan alongside Bill McGovern & I recall seeing James Hunt driving Jeremy Nightingale's in the supporting race for the 1970 GP at Brands! Take your pick!

Thats a pretty full list of Imp racers Giraffe, can I add Andrew Mylius as well (I'm sure he drove for Hartwell but could well be wrong).

Yes you did see James drive Jeremys Imp in 1970 but that car was new for 1970 and the Group 2 regs that had come into force. I know this as dad bought the car (1967 reg. from a little old lady in Tunbridge Wells) and stored it in our garage for five months until Jeremy collected it just before christmas 1969. We were always impressed at how much quicker the car was when James drove it in 1970.

Later of course (1969), Andy raced the Falken Racing Developments Chevron B8, and the Gropa CMC Spyder that he developed from it together with Bob Curl of Nomad fame and raced successfully with Gerry Birrell. Andy was a Graphic Designer.

I thought it could be Roger's car, mainly because of the wheels, he used to have orange coloured alloys (IIRC) and these look as if they could be coloured, rather than "silver".

Could that also be an orange stripe, along the side of the car at the top of the door roundel? Roger's Astra RNR1A from 1969 also had the twin orange stripes up the nose.

Possible Andy, his Nathans were different, but, as you say, the Astra and Imps always featured orange.

At last, more photos from Rob B to drool over.

The Imp is probably Ray Payne's and the A40 looks very much like Peter Bevan's.
I also remember the car at top left, is it John Brittans MG Midget?

I think the Photo comes from c1965/6 from memory.

Old age is a real bummer. blush.gif

Glyn

The Imps that Ray Payne drove for his employers were dual-coloured in the Team Hartwell house colours, ie white on top, orange below the belt line.
He also built excellent Imp engines and transmissions for a number of customers, many of whom would put Hartwell stickers on the car.
I have two Payne-built 998 Imp engines, both of which are on active duty in Historic saloons, having hibernated through the Eighties and Nineties.

The wheels look like wobbly webs so perhaps an easy option in the early days in Imp development. It was announced in May 63 IIRC

Looks like Nathan's Impudence 2 - even as early as 1964, he carried a BP sticker on the front wing, judging by one of the photos in his autobiography.

At last, an answer to the question of who's car it is. How did Nathan get away with such blatant advertising though? I saw the car race many times and do not remember to logo on the side of the car.

Not Lotus wobbly webs, but Brabham F3 wheels. Quite a few Impers used them.

Some shots from the 1981 Historic Gold Cup at Oulton Park.

R14B. Is that Donald Day alongside?

Dan Margulies 250F

John Surtees with winning JCB 250F.

Stirling Moss with Ken Moore Cooper T51 and R9B behind.

Some more....

Tyrrell Matras'

Cooper F2

Chevron B8

I do not have a programme from this meeting but assume it is the 1967 Oulton Park Gold Cup, can anyone please identify the Cooper and Chevron?

The first two pictures are from the 1967 Gold Cup meeting when the Tyrrell Matras were for Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx (plus a spare), no. 24 Cooper T82 was the Gerard Cooper Racing car , entered for Mike Beckwith but raced, I believe, by Harry Stiller, while the Chevron is from another meeting entirely but possibly could belong to Charles Bridges (often driven by brother John), Digby Martland or Arthur Moore (although I don't recall what colour Arthur's car was), all of whom won races at Oulton in '67.
