This site got wiped through some hosting connection.  It now redirects to the main site (.eu) which has a new format for photos which is compatible with IOS.

There is a photo on the site with a name missing (18:4, he standing to the right of Mike in the photo http://www.s15414038...es/friends.html) and some others could do with more information which was lost at the same time as the .info site.

The photo site was originally white on black but I've done it kind of grass mowings and hope it matches the rest of the site.

Hello John.  Sorry to hear about the website problems.

At first glance, the driver to the right of Mike, as we look at it, looks like Scarfiotti's twin brother, but I think it's Bob Bondurant.

Thank you.  Bob Bondurant sounds right to me - I couldn't match the face and hair line to any of the Italians on the team!

There's a story on this website http://www.sportscar...les/ParksM.html that he wrote-off fellow Rootes employee Geoff Williamson's Lotus Eleven at Mallory Park in 1958.  Does anyone know any more about this?

Parkes was entered at Silverstone on 10th May, at Mallory Park the next day and again at Mallory Park on 26th May according to programmes that I have seen.  I haven't seen results or reports for any of those races.

The car was racing in Geoff Williamson's hands at the British Empire Trophy at Oulton Park on 12th April and apparently disappears shortly after.

Michael Parkes had switched to driving the Fry-Climax F2 car by June 1958.

Don't know if it helps but a bit of 'previous history', via the Racing Sports Cars site.

This suggests that Parkes was racing a Lotus Eleven at Brands on 9.6.57 (finished second, owner unspecified but probably not Williamson who was racing his car at the same meeting), at Snetterton on 28.7.57 (owner G. Williamson, finished third), Brands again on 5.8.57 (owner unspecified, finished second) and in a Brands Formula Libre race on 7.4.58 (owner G. Williamson, won - car described as a Lotus-Ford 1172cc, rather than an Eleven). So there was some previous association.

The same wonderful site suggests Geoff Williamson had several outings with the Lotus Eleven between its debut (?) at Brands on 31.3.57 (finished seventh) and (as you say) its last mention against top opposition in the British Empire Trophy at Oulton Park on 12.4.58, when it broke its (by now) 1168cc engine in a qualifying heat.

Hope that helps untangle their racing schedules/obligations!.

Has anyone searched the glorious REVS site for period shots since Michael Parkes was 6ft4ins so would have stuck out of the top of an Eleven, I suspect.?

I’ve been interested in reading the current thread about the Lotus 11 because although I know and am in touch with Geoff Williamson’s children, now grandparents themselves, I’m short on information about that period and have been unable to trace any photos of LBW 800.

Geoff Williamson was not a Rootes employee.  Mike met him because Geoff lived in a village called Wheatley near Oxford which was also the home of Mike’s collegue Tim Fry who introduced them.

I’ve read before about the car running out of road on account of being nose heavy but can’t recall where the piece originally appeared.

I incidentally visited Wheatley several times with Mike during 1957 and 1958 and have memories of the Lotus being worked on and tested.  See https://mikeparkesdr...cing-1952-1959/

The list of races on the website www.mikeparkes.eu which my sister and I compiled from several sources does not mention the races that you refer to so I can’t help in that respect.  I do however recall a race at Silverstone which I watched at home on television.  In that race John Bolster, complete with deerstalker and distinctive drawl as usual, was reporting a pit stop by the Lotus in which, after the bonnet had been closed and Mike got back into the car elegantly pulling on his gloves, he started the engine and an object, which turned out to be the oil breather cap, shot straight through the aluminium bonnet and Mike shot several inches out of the driver’s seat.  The heat had melted a hole in one of the pistons and the spark lit the mist in the crankcase causing a big bang.  It might have put the car out of action for the succeeding race.

If anyone comes across a photo of the car please get in touch with me at feedback@mikeparkes.eu as I’d love to include it on the site.

Apologies if this article was mentioned and I missed it; in the October 1966 issue of Road & Track there is a Griff Borgeson article on Mike Parkes that can be found pages 89 to 94. It is titled Mike Parkes: About him, Enzo Ferrari has said, "a driver and a half"
