I think the Shadow painting is superb - and definitely finished enough for my tastes. Reminds me of the matchbox art from the 70's.

I totally agree with you Stefan. This is a great piece and I love it. I would like to use it as background if the format would fit.

BTW: the original design of the AVS Mk.I included air-breakes. Has anybody ever seen a illustration or drawing of that???

Finally got round to doing some proper sketching. Spent three hours in front of this 1927 Harley this morning and really enjoyed it - lots of interesting details...

Every day in December I'm going to be drawing little postcard-sized watercolours of made-up cars - it's called Auto Art Advent - here's the first couple. They're fun to do and it's a good opportunity to experiment a bit with the watercolours...

I see it has been fitted with an extra silencer, are we to presume from that it failed the noise level test at scrutineering and this was added for a retest ? Looks like it might just be mid-engined? Clearly quite a bumpy road too.

That looks like something from the movie 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes'.
Brillant, keep 'em coming.

I am planning to pick up pen and paintbrush soon after a forty year break - nothing approaching the standards set in this thread, but I'll be happy if I just get (re) started :)

Way back then, I used to use Rotring Rapidograph pens with watercolour tints... anyone any advice on tools for today; are the Rotrings still available, and are they the tool of choice???

Of course they are still around and they won't go away unless Rotring goes broke.

I'm still doing the advent sketches. Here's the last few days. First a hill climb special...

Sounds really cool, Mike! Good Luck and Have Fun!

I still have all my Rapidos, must have 40 nibs. Mine have only been dormant for 25 years, though... ;) You guys are tempting me to re-visit my past arts, I do miss all that (thinking of hand-pinstriping again soon as well, at least that pays some real money).

[Edit: Epic work, Stefan!]

Here are a couple of our family cars from around 1970-72 time; I had given up on the watercolour element by then, these were Rapidograph (AKM 47) and stationery shop felt tip (GY 2272):

I will 'restart' my thing here.

I feel that I have to 'pre-justify' what I do now, after earlier comments, so I will start off with some serious stuff before moving on...

I should also like to say that this work is not 'computer generated' but it is hand-drawn on a computer - there is a difference...

I would also like to say that I draw planes, not cars, so don't expect too much...

Hello Clave - welcome aboard - thanks for the great posts. I particularly liked the planes and it's great to see the sic-fi vehicles treated in the same way. No problems with it being digital - I use computers all the time - it's just another tool and it never magically does stuff for you (unless I haven't found the right button yet) - you still need talent to get something decent out of one.

The only thing I would say is that the cars look flatter than the planes when done as straight side views. I think it's fine for planes as they have a narrow tube-shaped fuselage at the centre. Cars, though have widely spaced wheels and you expect to be able to see a little of the back ones when looking from the side. I understand completely if you only intend them to be straight elevations.

Welcome Clave. Nice illustrations, especially the aircraft. Reminds of the old Profile Publications days.

What software are you using - Adobe Illustrator? Ideal for this sort of thing.

I'll chuck a train into the arena.

As I was the one to use the expression 'computer generated' when I suggested placing this work on the 'Artwork and drawing' thread, I didn't mean to offend, it was off the top of my head, spur of the moment, etc. I'm not sure what to call it, as to me there is a difference to traditional artwork and that done on a computer. Any suggestions? Or is there no difference?

I would suggest 'digital drawing' :)

It's always a tricky thing as everyone knows pen, pencil, and paintbrush as being traditional tools for making Art, and I don't know if what I do even qualifies as Art, but I use a pen and draw in an almost traditional way for the outlines, but the rest is different, so I would class it as 'Illustration'

Uh, sorry if I came over as touchy, but it has taken a long time for me to find something I am actually good at....

Adobe Illustrator is the tool of choice - nice train by the way, very nice

I think there's an overlap. It's something that comes up a lot in animation. I do mostly computer animation but started off traditionally. A lot of people think that the computer does it all for you but it's simply not true. It can make some things a bit less laborious (especially the colouring in) but if you let it do too much or if you don't know the rules of animation then you end up with a horrible floaty mess. Computers have made it easier for more people to produce animation but that doesn't mean there's more good stuff about. You have to know how to do it traditionally to do it well on a computer. I reckon that goes for drawing too.

Great stuff Tony - I had no idea you did this sort of thing too. Anything else we should know about - some saucy fantasy art perhaps? :)

I remember seeing Starfighters occasionally in Germany. When I was about 5 my grandparents used to have a restaurant on top of a forested hill with a look-out tower. If you were lucky you'd be at the top when one streaked past - pretty much on level with you - and close enough to see the pilot.

that Williams is a beautiful example of the depth Stefan refers to;

When I was in Germany in the late 70's & early 80's the Germans had a few problems keeping their Starfighters up in the air. I seem to remember one landed on an Autobahn, much to the the surprise of the local Merc and VW drivers!!

I hesitate to say without checking, fnq, as aero-types, understandably, get a bit irate when a Gypsy Moth is called a Tiger Moth, and these were done a long time ago. The book should say, I'll have a gander...

That's between Tony and Gwyndolyn :)

I'm not sure Gwendolyn would want more exposure on another thread Alan, but the 'Artwork and drawing' thread would be her more natural home, as she has always been a bit sniffy about cutaways. "It's not art, Tony dear, and I say that as someone who has modelled for dear, dear Pablo in his pre-cubist days (I'm pleased to say!), and dear, dear Lucien, who was more interested in my embonpoint than he should have been. Ah, he was so very naughty..." However, I might get her to strip off sometime, she does still love to flaunt...
