Does anybody know the address of Ian Burgess, the F 1 driver of the 60 ties.
The last address I have is in North London, but I think he has moved

He might be, but he didn't reply to me last summer. True, the letter didn't come back as Adressee not found either.

Mmh, maybe I'll pop round during the week and see if he's still there - not heard from him for quite a while.

Could you perhaps ask about his correct birthplace if you do get in touch with him?

Many thanks!

While there on other old threads are discussions about how and why , This here seems to be able to bear fruit ? I certainly would like to contact him , either personally or through one of you !

Perhaps it would be an idea to write a/the couple of questions we have ? He is not the youngest anymore.

Thanks!

I only found this :

Ian Burgess , Edgware , Middlesex HA8 7 , which I am sure is inadequate to the British Mail.

Ian Burgess' birthplace has been a Holy Grail mystery search for me, as some of you who know me will know. Even the late David McKinney couldn't discover it when he was doing the interviews for the mooted book about Burgess' life. Ian's death, and now David's removed any chance of knowing for certain. - the problem being Ian was adopted, from a London site and went to live in Bletchingley.

The birthplace is indeed still a mystery, but thanks to the Death Certificate which I had ordered, which arrived today, it has at least confirmed IB was NOT born in London - he was indeed, as David managed to eek out of IB, born in Scotland.

The failure of the death certificate to have the full birthplace means it'll probably be a mystery forever. Those that know are dead, or didn't keep records. Adoption records back then are very, very difficult to keep track of. Looking at Scottish records, there's not much joy either.

For the record the death certificate confirms:

born 6 July 1930, Scotland, died 19th May 2012, Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, Middlesex. Occupation was: Formula 1 racing driver (retired). Last lived in Harrow itself.

Causes of death: Heart Disease/Diabetes. David did mention IB had problems with diabetes when he met him in 2010-2011.

Forever ended up being 3 months!

Ian Burgess' grandson, Gustav has confirmed that Scotland was a deliberate entry on the death certificate.

IJB was actually born as David William Allan, who was the son of a Hampstead based journalist. The Allan's, like the Burgesses, were Scottish. Burgess, however, was born in St. Pancras, London.

So mystery solved!

Ian Burgess had quite a successful NZ Internationals tour in 1960.

He raced at Ardmore, Wigram, Dunedin and Teretonga for third at Wigram and a win at Teretonga, DNFs elsewhere. This shot is of the Burgess Cooper T51 Climax 2.2 at Wigram. (Classic Auto News)

The shot below is Ian aboard the Scirocco BRM during the ‘63 British GP weekend at Silverstone
