What is that small logo on the side? To me it resembles a red trident.

It is a red trident, symbol of Neptune Oil Co (now absorbed into Shell).

Pre-race Parade, Longford 1964.

I can easily identify Bob Jane, but not the other driver beside him, nor the driver whose face is obscured by the windscreen pillar. The rider in leathers in the white car is Kel Carruthers.

The guy beside Bob Jane looks a bit like Greg Cusack squinting into the sun. The guy in the passenger seat could be Frank Matich I would say.

By the way, does anyone know if it is possible to change password used to log on to this forum? I have not been able to find a way of changing . Thanks in anticipation.

I agree that it does look like Cusack behind. Must be the ATT car as Jane didn't run in the South Pacific Trophy. It was a good call as the Australian Tourist Trophy finished Matich, Jane then Cusack according to Barry Green's Fast Track Back Longford.

PS. Chris, go to User CP near the top in the middle, and this gives you a Change Password option.

Yes, must be Matich with the garland around his neck...

I'm trying to identify the location of the photo too... those little trees are the same as the ones that Timmy Mayer hit that year, but on the wrong side of the road and with the wrong background to be at that part of the circuit. Although 1964 was a drought year, IIRC, and that might make a difference to the appearance of the background.

I haven't seen photos of that area, but to me it could possibly be approaching Pub Corner, with the photographer standing outside the Mobil servo. The white tyre on the edge of the road also indicates proximity to a corner.

Yes, that's the point on the circuit I'm talking about...

Timmy Mayer died right near the Mobil servo.

That would probably be Eric Reece in the passenger seat this time...

Hill was the race winner, McLaren had won the series.

And judging by the hand placement of the man positioned above the driver's head in the photograph, I think it certainly indicates proximity to the Prince Of Wales.

Thanks for the tip David. I have been using the system delivered password for years, and not known how to change it.

You're sure right there, Terry...

That looks like Lionel ahead of Glynn... but those cars on the infield, that area's about 30' lower now, and the concentration of Holdens is no longer so great.

And the girls, they're undoubtedly showing a lot more wear than they did that day.

Another nostalgic "they way we were" photo, Oran Park, 1975 Tasman meeting (F5000 by then). It's one of a small batch I took before the attractions of the Esky became too great.

That is a very flash looking scruitineering bay. Puts a lot of permanent circuits to shame. (reminds me of my brother telling me about Sandown in the 90's when the scruitineering bay blew away!)

It's a Buchanan body with fibreglass top. I have no recollecion of the car

At first I had to agree with David: doesnt appear in the programmed list in the Bathurst book, so a special find I thought, and another personal smack on the wrist for the author

However, in the results appears Bruce Maher Buchanan Holden. Given the company the pink car keeps in the photo above, with cars arranged in classes, my guess is Bruce Maher Buchanan Holden

The Viaduct was very good for angles... but what about the skid marks that go down towards the creek on the other side of the road?

Terry, how did you get Peter Longley's pics, and how many do you have?

This looks like the same car a fortnight or so earlier... love the tow car!

Peter, an old mate, knew I was interested in racing photos, and when he discovered a few boxes of his slides on the subject he gave them to me. He had long ago pitched out all his b+w stuff in one of his various house moves, and these boxes had somehow survived, all that was left of his motor racing photography.

1 box Bathurst 500, 1969

1 box Longford

1 box Lakeside

1 box local Caversham touring cars

1 box 1962 AGP.

My immediate interest of course was with the WA stuff, because I was preparing the CD ROM version of Around the Houses at that time and colour was manna from heaven. Only lately have I been digging out the Eastern States stuff for a look, and to share with TNF.

You may remember Peter longley was Racing Car News correspondent for Wa racing in the late 60s.

And this is Peter Longley last year. It was the 40th Anniversary of the Light Car Club of WA and one of the big celebration events was a "gumnut" rally, suitable for the oldies. Peter (a top rally navigator in ancient times) navigated for me; and with advice and heckling from the ladies in the back seat we came third.

Guess the make and model of car.

Regarding the Sach-Cummo photo and car identification:

Definetely not Nota Din. Witness:
Pin type mounting on front shocks, Nota Din had eye fitted shocks
Narrow front wishbones - too narrow to be Nota and Nota Din had wider
Height of everything in front of cowl. Nota Din had everything lower than tops of wheels.
Age of build. Nota Din was a 1962 build. General view of car in photo shows to be probably fifties build, wheels, tyres etc.

Alternative conclusion by deduction, its Mini Din.

Historical note:
Nota Din started hillclimbing in mid 1962.
1962 championship won by Barrie Garner in Nota Major, a slightly larger direct take off of the Nota FJ's now Medley brothers owned.
Sach and Nota Din won consecutive championships in 1963 and '64.

Shame to hear of Ralph's demise but we all are suffering from the same problem.

Sorry about the slow response, busy on too many things recently,

Regards

Joe

Re Nota/Mini Din.

My guess is thatthe pic was taken in 1958, when Dave Van Dal, who took the pic, went to NSW for the 1958 AGP at Bathurst. I think that pins down the model.

And the white "rally car" with Peter Longley in it was built in Crewe in 1970.

Yep, R-R.

Re R/R - Yes I also concur - the moulded rain-gutters are the giveaway. But as late as '70? It's certainly a Shadow, but S1/2/3...?
