What a pity that Gilles and Vincent Duqueine, the two brothers who built the very first F3 with carbon monocoque, are separated now !
After buit AGS and Ligier monocoque, and after the terrible accident of Gilles, who was a very fine and very fast driver, they are no longer together.

Wasn't the Reynard 853 the first carbon monocoque F3?

It depends, I guess. The Duqueine VG4 was (according to Hodges' A-Z) designed and built during 1984 for debut in the 1985 season, which would be in parallel with the Reynard 853. So which one was presented first, and which one raced first?

Pretty little cars though, both of them. I'd love to see more pictures of the work of the Duqueine brothers.

Yes, I agree, they are neat cars.

And it looks like the Duqueine was a Minardi or ATS wannabe :)

Gilles Duqueine is in a wheelchair after his terrible road accident, but is today manufacturing the HANS devices for the Stand 21 company as well as a good proportion of the ones sold today by HANS (Jim Downing) in the USA. His carbon-fiber technology is second to none on this planet, and his company produces as many as 15000 bicycle wheels every year.
Gilles attended the 2005 Monterey Historics with Stand 21's president Yves Morizot. Despite his paralysis, he gets around quite well, drives a hand-control modified car with no problems and a conversation with him is fascinating.

After the accident of Gilles (not o the track...just on the stupid road) the two brothers were searching for a very good driver.

Philippe Gache who haved just win the french Formula Ford (on the Rondeau M585) in 1985, was the man for. He had a tiny budget of Ford France and Midas and could run the Duqueine VG5 during the 1986 F3 championship along his good friend Jean Alesi and the Dallara. The results were astonishing for a one year old F3.

Here Philippe Gache in Monaco 1986 (Personnaly I had always think that Phillipe was far more better than Jean....)

Gerard, I agree, Gache is a terribly underrated driver.

Never got a shot worthy of his talent.

My good friend Iain Rowley has been labouring hard over the winter to get the Oliroy F3 car ready to race again. The engine runs fne, but there are a myriad of details that need to be attended to.
A visit to Gerald Swan's excellent F3 site will reveal a lot more about the car....

Alan,

Did Iain buy the Oliroy when it was for sale on Racecars Direct a couple of years ago?

OT: Alan, would you or Iain know the present whereabouts of Ken Taylor, who used work at Deltas and since was co-founder of Talon?

In october 1981, Gilles Duqeine (on the left) had beat Yannick Dalmas (on the right) for the "Volant Marlboro" with a time of 5'15"85 again 5'15"96...for Yannick !!!

He win one year in the French Marlboro Team of "Production cars" for 1982.

Here is the pic of Gilles, very happy, and Yannick a little less...(Hugues de Chaunac is in the middle)

I've only just come across your questions, Anders. The Oliroy was bought by Colin Painter a couple of years ago, and whilst he haa done a very nice job of restoring the chassis and suspension, he felt that the details (plumbing, exhaust etc) would be completed more quickly by someone who is doing that sort of thing all the time.

As for Ken Taylor, I'll ask Iain tomorrow, but I don't ever remember his name being mentioned.

Thanks Alan, I'll keep my eyes open.

TNF'er 'beighes' aka Stephen Bay is also helping me locate Ken Taylor.

At this time, the carbon technology was at the first step for minor formulas.

After have build their first chassis for the Duqueine VG4, they sold a chassis to AGS (see above) but also, and it is very little known, an other chassis to the "king" of hill climbs in France, Marcel Tarres.

Marcel built this F3000 for him in 1985, with DFV engine, very like the AGS JH20 . It was called Tarres DCL01. He expect to be able to engage it in some F3000 races, but the budget was to small and he cannot.

For the following year, in 1986, Marcel modified this car to convert in FL for hill climbs with a BMW. He give the drive to the fast lady : Anne Baverey.

Here, a rare pic ot this Tarres DCL01 F3000 :

This is the same car, uprated in FL form, with the BMW engine for french hill climbs in 1986.
It was raced by the Team of Marcel Tarres for Anne Baverey, with some very good results indeed.

Merci, Gerard. That's the first I've ever heard of this.

I always wondered how good Tarres was - he was the only driver to get a Dollop Racing car into an F3k field, in sunny Brummagem, but only lasted a lap or so.

Yes,
the car has been ordered and paid by Oliveira and Perroy and named OLI ROY begin and end of their names. Oliveira ran in french championship and Perroy in european championship.
It has a body coming from a Martini. I remember the chassis identification is in copper.
This car has been remade by Houlman - Hervé Delaunay at Rouen in France. He just drove it once at Croix en Ternois and advertise in Racecarsdirect. The car had been sold in England before he race in french Trophee F3Classic as he intended to do.
Some guys are interesting to see this car back in France....

Does anyone know how much of the AGS JH20 was based on the Duqueine 'project'. Was the JH20 a full Duqueine design or did they just produce the chassis. :)
