Probably never had trouble with his 917-10 fronts for the same reason. I've never seen such a big gokart!Jody told me that he never had problems with the Trojan's front tyres as he never used them because the car was always sideways!

And to come back to the on-track machinery, what sort of car is Alan Jones driving in the last pic ? A March of sorts ?

Thanks, I'm happy that you like the images!Great pics as usual ! Apart from the artistic quality of the actual snapshots, I'm amazed at the sharpness, brightness and intensity of the colours - are those slides or colour negs that you're scanning , and may I ask what sort of equipment you use ?
And to come back to the on-track machinery, what sort of car is Alan Jones driving in the last pic ? A March of sorts ?
Most of these were taken with Kodachrome 64 and 25 slide film, scanned with a Nikon 5000ED scanner using SilverFast software, and corrected in Photoshop. When all is said and done, each image takes one to two hours start to finish (plus the 1/125th it took to shoot ).
Being that Kodachrome lacks the color and luster of Fuji films over the past two decades, and that color is evolving in our tastes as well, I correct the images to appear similar to my more current Fuji Velvia 50 chromes.
I think the March was a converted 761 F1 car, and may have been called a 76A. I looked in the race program, that driver's entry is missing.
Thank Again!

Alan started the year in a Lola T-332 and ran the March late in the year. In how many events, I can't recall.

Teddy Yip told Doug if anything went wrong he would stand behind the repairs. Allison was allowed out in practice where he wrecked the tub. Doug Shierson had to pay all repairs and Theodore Racing never gave him a cent. Thus, Doug Shierson didn't have any love for Teddy Yip the rest of his racing. Bruce Allison was given the ride because he was friends with Alan Jones.

Jones driving the Shirey car in the race led to a lot of confusion on the hillsides. The car switch was made quite late, and with the usual inability to hear anything on the PA system unless one was standing immediately below the speaker, confusion reigned. Those of us who had been in the paddock knew of the switch, but the majority of fans did not. As I walked about the track I overhead many fans express surprise that the unknown Richard Shirey was running right up with the leaders. When I pointed out that it was Alan Jones in the car, and with a close look they could identify his helmet, heads nodding knowingly.
The next round was at Mid Ohio, and Theodore Racing gave it a pass, with no car available. They were back at the following round, which was Road America's second of the year, with a brand new unraced car which was lovely to look at, so clean and unblemished! Jones was busy in Europe with the Dutch GP so Derek Bell drove the car, but was a DNF with new car blues in the points race. Bell did finish third the following day in the non-points Handicap race.

Theodore Racing were at Mid Ohio. They'd got hold of yet another T332, the ex-Guy Edwards/Embassy Racing car (HU34). Jones finished third in his heat, but had gearbox problems and couldn't start the final. According to Gordon Kirby in Autosport, this particular car had modified rear suspension, so the team found they couldn't fit their spare gearbox. The next round was at Mid Ohio, and Theodore Racing gave it a pass, with no car available.

Oops. I just looked at the results box of the final, not the heats, did not see Alan's name there, so assumed that they gave it a miss. I wonder if that could have been modified to get Tony Brise's knees to fit at Long Beach in '75???

He would have to have extraordinary long femurs. I know the McLaren M10s had the option for a long-range fuel tank in that position....I wonder if that could have been modified to get Tony Brise's knees to fit...

I know Brise was very tall, but you sure could be right.
Man, those were some really brave boys. I'll bet not a one of them could even spell "Latte."

The alloy spraying of the headers was hardly new even then. Speedway cars were doing it in 1970 with good results, better than the ceramic coatings used now. I now of a set still in use that were done in the late 70s!Looking through my fathers old company magazines ("The Bridge ") - Arnolds of East Peckham ,Tonbridge ,Kent saw this so i guess it might interest someone somewhere ! Date was June 1970 Does the car still exist ? And off topic ..Walter Arnold the company founder was the first fella to get nicked for speeding in the Arnold Benz "Adam" at 5mph i believe ! That car is at Beaulieu museum...

Never knew Lees ran in that series, in fact didn't know they admitted F1 cars(assuming it's the Mario Delotti car that Lees ran in the 1978 British GP qualifying and Aurora series).
Many thanks for posting.

It was N175 MN04 from 1975 that was owned by Jack Kallay & sponsored by Mario Delotti and Teddy Yip. I spoke to Jack this morning & am meeting him in a couple of days so I'll ask him more about it.

That has to be fun to see oneself from so many years ago (regardless of hair or bell bottoms!).... I find myself checking every parallel resource I can, even crowd shots.... but alas, no E1pix thus far....Just realised that I am on this photo. My profound apologies for the haircut.
There's so much hair in this shot that you certainly don't stand out.... nor would you look much different than others such as myself!
Now that you've opened this can of worms, I mean hair, some of us are pondering "Which hair belongs to Elan?" My guess is the tall hairdo above and left of the Cortina, now there's a look best "departed!" (answer not necessary! )

Sheepskin (or was it cheapskin?) jacket behind the guy in red overalls! I think I had a Midget at the time, the heater never worked too well, to turn it on/off you had to open the bonnet and turn a little brass-wheeled valve on the cylinder head.
