Here are some pictures I took at the Pontedecimo - Giovi regularity hillclimb that was held last week in Genoa. This event has an heritage spanning back to 1920s, with 28 races taking place between 1922 to 1967 on the challenging route that starts from the city outskirts to reach the top of the hilly ridge separating the sea from the mountain region up north.
Italy being Italy, someone had forgotten to ask for the right authorization for the first day stage to take place in the harbour area near the airport, so the event had to be cut short: although it seemed, at first, that the authorities had not cared about the lack of paperwork, Genoa being Genoa an old lady ( - sigh -) complained about the noise (which is at least a peculiar objection, since the cars were on a pier between the airport landing strip and the shipyards :drunk: ) and the whole thing was shut down until the following day.

Ford P100s weren't the only pick-ups to go racing. Julien Motre's Alfa 75 version. During the early laps it was a contender in the Alfa race.

This looks just wrong and I can't decide what's worse: turning an Alfa into a pick-up or painting it in french racing blue...or the combination of both.

I'd rather go with an Alfa 75 pick up than a P100 any day even in French Racing Blue :rotfl: I know Alfa have done commercial vehicles in the past was this one of them or is it simply a car that had its roof trashed by an over zealous Alfa driver ?

I first read Ford F100 instead P100....I would also go with that Alfa after I checked what a P100 is. I've never heard of it before.

There was a short-lived series in the UK contested by P100s, which were pick-ups based on the Sierra. Some photos by Simon Arron have been posted recently on the British Club racing thread. The Alfa in question is a saloon conversion

You guys have presumably never spent a day in a 1.6 litre P100 pick up truck hauling god knows how many hundred weight of leaf springs of various sizes, give me the French racing blue Alfa 75 pick up any day, it looks like a most welcome change, you never know when N Piquet Jr runs out of venues to race he might bring over his NASCAR Tundra now that would be fun... if he let his old man drive it :-)

No; that was Greta Car, bro!

Alan, you noticed I like the event, slightly. It is simply magic, imho, something for everyone.
This year I was asked to concentrate on the behind the scenes aspects (managed a few action shots too).

Here is a 4x4 2CV- don't see one of those every day.

Purely by chance I happened upon the 10th Vintage Car and Bike Rally in Volterra the other week. Unfortunately we were there on Thursday, so missed the parade. There was however, a rather delightful display in the Palazzo Pretorio.Posted Image

There appears to be a fairly well established hillclimb, judging by the video footage and wall displays, unfortunately Mrs Swintex's eagerness to find somewhere suitable for lunch (successfully accomplished) precluded more serious historical research.

Do they or have they raced bikes there ?

Yes, they have. There are two different layouts at Bikernieki, usually called "the circuit of speed" and "the circuit of skill". The first has been used mostly for car racing, the second for motorcycle racing.

Why not next year, especially since it will be most probably held not in September but in August, so there won't be any time coincidence with the Goodwood Revival :)

I am looking into it, do you have any dates for next year Alexey ?

How difficult is it to get to Kaliningrad from Riga ?

If I am in that neck of the woods, I might make a grand tour of one or two other places I have on my list of places to visit :-)

No dates for next year now, and I think they wouldn't be exactly known before spring 2011. Perhaps my friend Ziepars - if he reads this thread - can give more reliable information.

Not sure if the Mini Festival at Castle Combe a couple of weeks ago counts as historic, but since the model is 50 years old I guess it must be close enough.

Here are some snaps of the on track action, members of the Super Mighty Mini's were giving rides around the track in aid of the Jay Ryles Fund.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

I am afraid it's twenty years since I have seen any Mini's racing so I have no idea who the drivers of these cars are, though David Kirkpatrick looks like a good guess in one of them.

Posted Image

After the event I learnt that the Minisprint owes part of its existence to Castle Combe this being the track where Geoff Thomas and Neville Trickett met and after 'a ridiculously brief discussion' agreed to go ahead and build these fabulous little cars. I noticed from the Minisprint website that Neville Trickett is resident in France I wonder if this him in his own car ?

Posted Image

I can't remember the last time I saw a Mini Marcos, this one appears to have come a long way to join in the fun.

Posted Image

Thanks to Dean of the Moke Club this car has been tentatively identified as an Andersen variation of the Moke theme.

Posted Image

There were many hot mini's to be seen some with super charger installations that appeared bigger than a 1275 block !

Posted Image

Posted Image

Finally I a couple for the hard core commercial vehicle fans on this thread

For those who missed my Mini Festival blogs last week click on my blog link below and scroll back a couple of days, you should find some pics from the Castle Combe paddock.

Nordic,
The "Alfa TZ2" in the photos is actually a Sprint Zagato coda tronca, based on the Giulietta floor pan. The TZ2 is a different beast entirely. The captioneer seems to have got carried away.

On the subject of 'are they the real deal' .... this Alfa may be the real thing, but most unfortunately one or two Japanese owners of Alfa SZs seem to have been sold misrepresentations of the real thing produced in Italy and Germany in the 1980s.
Nick
