I'll second that - it's a classic! Devil's Elbow at Mallory if I'm not mistaken. It does look like a Yamsel to me - forks, front mudguard and swinging arm are definitely not standard Yamaha. Some good old 1970's duct tape on there too!!

If you are still stuck with the frame numbers, one of the guys in our microlight syndicate runs the company 'Tramper', who make cross country buggies for disabled people. I am sure Chris said one of Eric Cheney's old employees now builds the frames for them. You never know, he may be able to help. Let me know if you need me to track him down.

The only racer I knew was Barry who id seen on the telly... By the time of the Trans at brands I thought I’d met most of the whose who of the racing world.
Our caravan was the business centre while we were away for Ruth, while having tea this bloke comes in and starts chatting to Ruth.. Along the lines of, I need you to give me a bike and crew for the tt...will this chat got rather heated and after an hour she told him strait there was no bike for him and she didn’t care what he had done in the past good bye !!!
When he had gone I asked Ruth who was that old bloke?? She looked at me and pissed herself laughing Phil Read you dick...

From what I can remember she came across as a very nice person even as a team owner, mind you Mr. Sayle may have a different view!!
What I do know is that her hubby had the biggest train set you can imagine lol we did a press launch on the train ... sure I have seen a pic with all the guys in front of it with Ruth.
Back to Mr. Read I’m not 100% sure was there not sourer grapes over comments made in the press or a book about Barry??
Must admit Phil came across as a person who lived on passed glories ... and yes he had every right to!!

I've revived this thread in order to ask a question following a story that my Dad told me.

My Dad lived in Harlow when he was growing up. He told me that a house near him was occupied for a very brief period by someone who parked a van outside which had "Phil Read Motorcycles" or something similar painted on the side. Unfortunately he never got to find out who it was. Is there a chance that it was the great man himself? Or might it have been someone connected with the race team?

Where did your Dad live in Harlow? I dont remember seeing it but the Harris brothers are from Harlow so connected to them maybe?

Phil Read was-still is- a great rider. Pity the competitive edge extends where it should'nt. Frank Melling had to ask him to leave a Thundersprint- I believe for charging for autographs when under the guest attendance terms this was not allowed. I do love Phil's Quote when he was seen trying the then new mobile phone from Oxford Products at an NEC bike show. The question asked was "why do you need one of those Phil?" He replied " It should be useful for talking to potential ex wives!"

I thought you blokes were joking when explaining that Phil asks for money for autographs and/or photos with him. Jeez, he can't be that hard up, can he?

Vernon Glashier lived around there might be to do with him?

Have to say , Russ , iv'e never seen him refuse , or charge , for a piccie or autograph , indeed , I have a few going back to the 60's , and the most recent on one of his caps , with no extra charge !!

It would have been about 1973, as a young lad of probably about 13 years old, I was at Cadwell eagerly hunting autographs in the paddock, as I walked up from the old cafe to the top paddock I spotted him strolling along on his own, there he was, one of my hero's walking down the hill towards me!!

I whipped out my autograph book and as he approached I politely held out my book and pen and asked if I could have his autograph, he stopped, stared at me for a second, then said, 'no, go and wait at my van with everyone else' he then stepped around me and walked off, its not as if he was about to go out on track, or was in any hurry to go anywhere, it was just downright rudeness.

I went home that day and took his poster off my bedroom wall, unfortunately people remember things like that for the rest of their lives,

That is South African Peter Aitken, taken in 1970 when Luton Boy and others visited ZA for the South African TT held at the Roy Hesketh circuit in Pietermaritzburg.

Very nice Peter?, is that one of Steve Wheatmans? If I was being a bit picky (which I'am not! ) the three coloured stripes are to thin.

Not that were picky but yes that to Mike, if this is one of Steve's, I don't actually think it is ex Read, its just wearing looky likey clothes? I seem to recall in correspondence we had, that that was the case? What ever still a lovely bike & job.
