Nitpicking, I know, but 2953cc, not a special 2.6litre version. Another excellent shot, Norman. Thanks.

Graham Heath suggested to me that this might be "Keith Jones, Formula Junior Lotus 20, Oulton Park, March 1962 (See photograph in the relevant issue of Autosport , March 1962)".

Graham is the major contributor to "A Record of Motor Racing At Oulton Park, 1962, £15.90 incl p&p

No. 23 Ian Burgess 1.5 Scirocco BRM V8 Burgess finished in 8th place three laps behind the winner.
History :- The ecurie Nationale Belge bought three Formula 1 cars from Paul Emery, and was based on the Formula Junior Emeryson design for 1961. Both Maserati and Coventry Climax engines were used without any success, and they often failed to make the grid. The American-financed Scirocco project later took over the cars, rebuilding and renaming them, without improving their fortune

Car No.36 Peter de Klerk (South Africa) 1991cc Porsche Carrera 6 (works supported) The Porsche was easily the noisiest car in the race, and seemed to be having trouble in the gear change department, several throttle blips being apparent on each change-down for Old hall. He also came in several times for windscreen cleaning - finished in 6th place overall

1967 International Diamond Jubilee Tourist Trophy Races Isle of Man Monday 12 june 1967 Lightweight (250) International T.T. 6 laps 226.4 miles
No.14 Phil Read 250cc Yamaha Read had probably the most exciting ride of the race. In spite of being fitted with two steering dampers his Yamaha called for a stranglehold on the grips to keep steering wobble in check. There were blisters on his hands to prove it. Read finally finished 2nd.

As usual, a great atmospheric shot Norman! I loved this period (and the 906 too) and saw de Klerk at Brands. What I particularly liked around this time, was the cars had name plates on them, clearly readable, as with F1 and G7 cars of the time, compare that to the garish paint of the "Earthcar" by Honda! The names used to roll off the tongue, Clark, Hill, Spence, Hansgen, Gurney, Stewart, Rindt.............

I know this is a 1970 photo but I am putting it with the 1960's bunch to cover most of motoring disiplines and a way of wishing everyone who uses this web site a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
The photograph was taken on the Lakeland Stages Rally April 22 1978 in the Greystoke Forest.
Car No. 15 Bill Dobie and Peter Mellor 1.8 Ford Escort RS1800. Dobie and Mellor were the quickest through the forest stages on the Lakeland Rally and finished in first place overall more than a minute and a half in fromt of the second placed crew.

I attended this race, and when I saw the photo, I thought Dave Buckett(IIRC front number plate MC 58), it could be him, but Roger posted the programme to confirm that I was at least on the right track!!!Notice that Matt Neal's dad is in the Equipe Arden car and the late Tony Fall in a Vitafoam Mini.Whizzo is also in the reserve list, I too have this programme Roger, if I can only find where I stored them all.... smoking.gif

Christabel Carlisle, saw her driving many times, her and Anita Taylor were superb racers up.gif

I think the first car is Chris Montague in the Alexander Engineering car, it looks like the ex Tony Lanfranchi blue and white, mini that was also Alexander sponsored.

Elizabeth Jones was also a very quick mini driver, Liz Jones could mix it with the best, unfortunately she appears to have dissapeared altogether,

Norman,
I'm utterly amazed by your collection, absolute gems. Re the 1970's Oulton shots; I must have been standing next to you for some of them!
Please keep posting.

Thanks Norman.
Any Formula Ford 1600 stuff from mid 1967 onwards would be drooled over.
Also Malcolm Barfoot's father was a bike racer of yesteryear. Any of him?

RAC International Tourist Trophy Race Oulton Park Saturday 1 May 1965
N0.21 Sir John Whitmore 4.7 Shelby American Cobra (open version) Entrant Alan Mann Racing Ltd.
Whitmore set the pace among the GT cars, throwing the big open Cobra around as if it were a Mini, cornering in full lock slides with smoke coming off the rear tyres. It was not surprising that he had to stop for new rear tyres and for fuel, and this together with brake trouble resulted in 8th place in the first heat.
Whitmore finished 6th overall in the second part and was the overall winner of the GT category and 4th overall

Norman,
Yet more wonderful shots! I don't think I've ever seen a Lotus 30 fully side on before, didn't realise just how long they were. Hats off to Vic Wilson for managing to go 62 laps in that awful contraption. biggrin.gif

Hear hear. I know the Lotus 30/40 range were absolute dogs, but they really did look sensational.

Wonderful picture of Basil Davenport and Spider.

Forgive me but I would query calling it a Brooklands Special. Surely it is THE most important "Shelsley special". I don't think the car has any Brooklands connection per se.

QUOTE (hardy @ Oct 28 2008, 08:56) *
Phil De Banks lived near Aylesbury in Bucks, he raced an Anglia for quite a while.
I believe he once worked at Alexander engineering.

You are correct - Phil de Banks raced as Aylesbury racing out of a cow shippen near the village of Hardwick. In 1965/66 he ran a yellow (with matt black painted interior) Anglia with 1650 Twin Cam and what I used to think of as enormous sized tyres - mainly in club races at Silverstone - quite successfully. He rented used race tyres by the weekend from an outfit in London. In 1966 he also raced my Group 2 Anglia with 1200 engine at events like the Martini Trophy at Silverstone and the Grand Prix meeting at Brands. I lost touch with him after that.

You are correct that he previously worked at Alexander Engineering porting heads. He told me that on one occasion some royalty figure was visiting and when he came to Phil said "Ah - so this is where the work is done". I believe he later raced Minis quite sucessfully - as mentioned on other threads.

I'd love to get in touch with him again. Anyone know where he is now - he'd be well into his 70s - even I am. I heard some years ago that he was running a Guest House or small hotel in a south coast town. The guy who told me this just happened to stay there and was intrigued by the various trophies and a polished crank in the display cabinet - but couldn't remember the name or address. Derek.

Sorry, no idea where he is. His birth was registered in Aylesbury in 1937.

Spoke to his brother today - Phil died last September (2009) -RIP.

There is a chance we might be able to access his scrapbooks and maybe post some of the information and pics - who is the best person to evaluate how worthwhile this is and/or where to post it?

Following pic shows Phil leading and winning at Ingleston in April 1966. I don't think that Anglia was ever at his workshop near Aylesbury at that time - maybe he drove for someone else or rented a ride - he had a knack for making things happen.

Hmm - how do I post a jpeg from my own files? Can some one post it for me I email it to them - thx.

I knoe that this is not an 1960,s photo, but I thought I would give the Rally Fans some photos from the early 1970,s. The photos are from the 1973 Daily Mirror RAC Rally and taken in SS 40 Grizedale Forrest. This shot is car No. 35 of Eeva Heinonen and Selia Saaristo driving a 1986cc Volvo 142. The ladies team finished !st in the ladies section.
I have something like 7,000 rally photos from 1971 up to present day from The RAC, National Breakdown, Cartel, Talkland, Audi, Pirelli, York, Cumbria, Lakeland, Mintex, Malcolm Wilson, Gibson's of Brock and last but not leased The Roskirk Stages Rally.

Hi Norman,
Reference above I used a Mini Clubman 1275GT Reg No GTL 430N on the Mintex 1980, Rogers Carpets 1980, Tour of Cumbria 1980, RAC 1981 and before me Bill Barton used the same car on the Mintex 1977 and Mintex 1978. Do you have any photo's of it?
I also used a Mini Copper S on the 1977/1978 and 1979 Catsrol Autosport Championships. Do you have any photo's of that?
I will gladly pay for any that you have. My email is petom@btinternet.com

Awesome Norman, looking forward to seeing where this thread goes, since my folks 2nd car was a brand new Escort circa 1969 I always had a soft spot for them, wondering if you caught anything of the '68 London to Sydney or either of the 1970 or 1974 World Cup rallies ?

Anytime my folks went to order new cars there was always something new in the showroom from these events ie Roger Clarks (?) Lotus Cortina, Mikkola's Escort FEV 1 H and Andrew Cowan's White Horse Escort, which I am guessing were in a showroom somewhere in Central London.

I got to sit in the '74 WCR V8 Morris Marina in Aldershot during some sort of military open day and '74 P76 Leyland (also in a show room) in the days before ordinary folk had camera's on their personages 24/7 as we all seem to do these days :-)

Any pics from these events would be thrilling to see :-)
