An unexpected summer news came up from the International Motorsports panorama. As Italiaracing.net can reveal, the International Formula Master will be called GP3 and Race alongside Formula one in at least 5 rounds during 2009. The details are not yet public, but the series, created by Italian Mauro Sipsz, appears to have finalized the talks with the FIA. The International Formula Master will retain its regular partnership with the FIA WTCC in the remaining rounds.

The agreement will also allow the IFM to capitalize the relation with Honda, racing under the eyes of Honda F1's Ross Brawn. Is to remember that the 2008 Champion will have the chance to test an Honda RA108 F1 racecar, building the experience needed to get a super licence.

IFM is also trying to attract even more teams, starting talks with ART and Raikkonen Robertson Racing.

Interesting.

So how long before F1 becomes GP1, then?

Nevah!

They're welcome to create a new series, but the name 'F1' has been long around for any1 to mess around with.
All the history and champions/championships fall under the Formula 1 name.

What are the technical details of this series?

Well, anything before 1981 is not in fact part of the Formula One World (Drivers' and Constructors') Championship(s), but of the World Drivers' Championship and the International Cup for Constructors, respectively. But that's a whole different matter...wink.gif

See lustigsons point, and then remember there was life before 1950.

2.0 litre Honda powered 250HP, full specs here .

Class was designed in 2007 to compete with F3, this way Ecclestone gets one over Max and his F2 plans.
At least this new series already has actual cars and contestants.

And that the Drivers' World Championship hasn't always been run under F1 rules...

Is this the beginning of the end for F3, I wonder?

It gives F1 a structure like Moto GP, which has the GP, 250 and 125 categories racing on the same bill.

Plus that they will likely change the 2-stroke 250 cc class to 4-stroke 600 cc, for 2010, I believe, which could be called MotoGP2.

This seems to be an exercise in pointlessness.

First off, let's confuse the public with:

F1
GP2
GP3

Makes no sense to jump from the F-word to the G-words.

Now let's confuse the public even more by adding in:

F2
F3

And don't even mention the myriad other series sniffing around between F3 and GP2 level such as World Series by Renault, Formula BMW, A1GP and that stupid new Superleague football thing (which mercifully will be gone when the footie team money disappears as soon as the teams lose interest in ooh let's say a matter of months, or have poor seasons and need to make cutbacks).

Have I forgotten anything else?

Granted, F3 is definitely an entity in itself (i.e visibly slower than all of the rest) but you could easily lump GP2, A1GP, Word Series by Renault and Superleague together as relatively close series and GP3, F2 and F-BMW are clearly sniffing around on the fringes of that level.

I can't really see the point in having all of these similar series happening at the same time, unless it's all part of the whole 'divide and conquer' routine.

No.

FBMW is below F3.

It is an entry-level series for drivers out of karts.
