Ancient history. I have just been reading a contemporary race report of the 1949 Belgian GP motorcycle meeting. There is passing mention of two serious accidents, leaving two dead and two severely injured. I cannot find any other mention or reference to the possible identity of the victims. Would anybody be able to add more detail? Or was the report simply wrong?

Re Doug Nye's query about the 1949 Belgian GP, there was an accident at Blanchimont on the first lap of the Sidecar race.

Edgar (?) Bruylant, a Belgian rider on a Sarolea outfit, went off and was fatally injured, as was his passenger whose name I do not have.

Giuseppe Prati, riding a Guzzi, rolled it in avoidance and broke an arm - his (anonymous) passenger suffered minor injuries.

I have no record of any other big accident at this meeting.

Incidentally, this sidecar race was the one where Eric Oliver had a breakage of a fuel banjo union on his Norton on Lap 1 - Denis Jenkinson, passengering in what was to be their World Championship year, did his little Dutch boy act and held the union together for the whole race.

In spite of DSJ having to "stay in" for the whole race, and not working at all, they won by 25 seconds from Franz Vanderschrick (Norton) with Ernesto Merlo on a factory Gilera third.
