Barry seemed to have a special affinity with the French riders. I suppose that was partly due to his linguistic abilities.

....and everybody will have noticed that Barry is riding a french Yamaha in this picture smile.gif

It is....and I wonder if the old boy isn't his former speedway riding uncle, Albert, or whatever it was ?

Looks like a mk1/2 Transit, the bullnose version with the wheezy York diesel engine were popular, although slow. I've seen a few which had a 3 litre V6 petrol transplant, quite a bit quicker but very thirsty!!

Just to add: In pre-Transit days when the Thames was the transport of choice, a few hardy folk swopped the 4 cyl Consul motor (1622cc I think) for the 6 cyl Zephyr engine, about 2600cc IIRC. This involved a bit of work with changing engine mountings, moving back the g/box crossmember and shortening the propshaft, but was a pretty speedy race van for its time.

Hi,

Yes it was transporter and camper at the same time!
The picture is from 1975, taken at Ring Knutstorp in southern Sweden, horrible paddock back then, now a day it’s a really nice place.
The Mustang belonged to some friends that came from Denmark to spend the weekend, hence the crate of Carlsberg next to the Transit drunk.gif

They are some hospitality suite the old transit race van, waking up in the morning freezing and soaking wet from all the condensation dripping from the roof, trying to squeeze into ice cold leathers that are stiff as cardboard for half an hour till your body heat warms them up.

My one had a lovely red stripe down one side, only one side though cos my dad ran out of paint........................priceless lol.gif

How are you getting on with your project Leif?....any more pics?

Only if you could get the bugger to start (York) 2 batteries and a liberal dose of easy start helped, but no guarantee!!What a pile of crap that motor was.One of my old transporters was an old VW camper, painted a horrible shade of green, but it started to rain before it dried. It looked like it was suffering from an incurable malady, with pock marks all over it.The paint was anti infra- red detection stuff donated by an ex army mate.Supposed to by anti radar or something.Meant we could turn up at meetings and nobody knew we were there(and confirmed by my results).Of course the van was then nick-named Rommel!

It had been gutted out when I bought it, plenty of room inside though with the high roof.

On the subject of 'Easy Start' it's said that once it's used, an engine gets addicted to it, which is true. It dissolves the carbon deposits on the piston crowns and combustion chamber, which reduces the compression even more.
