I think a lot of riders etc liked & rated Bob Smith too. When we left that terrible day, it was bloody awful driving away with his van still there in the empty paddock, very sad.

What was he 2 or 3 times British Champion, and I don't recall him on any type of Works bike, even a one off? Why?

Mr Fu all the above is just about right . I likened him in a lot of ways to Joey Dunlop and I believe Bob was on the verge of moving a further step up the ladder as Joey did .

No Mike, I think we need to remember these guys who were friends & idols, I am glad you shared it with us, it puts it in to perspective that the sport we love can be cruel at times, but gave/gives great pleasure & enjoyment, even to the ones lost doing it, as well as to people like myself.
But as in many things in life, its best to try and remember the good things that have happened, and not dwell on negative things.
Sorry if that comes across as a bit personal, its meant just generally.

Not much wrong with that in my book ,I had similar feelings twice---both at Silverstone for Kim Newcome when I saw his deserted rig who I didn't know and then for Norman Brown who I did know and wrote about that fateful day a while ago
