I took this shot at the Mike Hailwood memorial day at Donington Park in 1982. Its the Honda Six that was swapped for a Gold Wing as they wanted a 'more modern' bike to display in a local museum in Canada after the GP at Mosport Park, or something like that and Tom Faulds duly obliged. up.gif

Its the first time I have looked at it closely and it looks like Bob Smith is standing in the background... smile.gif

Think I have solved it with this pic, same year same day, same meeting!! Bob Towse?

Barry had a big off at the IOM. I think he hit a milk truck or something when out for ride, not racing. Along with Stavros, he is the funniest guy I know and e shared some good times. Spoke with him a year or so back and all was well.

Thanks for that Stu. wave.gif ..he was brilliant on the 400 Yamaha on the Island...I wonder if he did any GPs?

I can't remember whether I've posted these before; anyway, they are from 1982:

Again one from http://www.philread.org/ Chaps, Is it possible to distinguish a TR2 from a TD2 - If so which is this?
Ray Oldam
Russel,

They are virtually identical, and with a black and white photo we can't see the colour of the plates!! The expansion chamber sizes would definitely be different, the TD2 exhausts I think reach just past the rear spindle, but the TR2 ones extend nearly to the back tyre?? Difficult to tell from a three quarter side on shot but I think it's a 350 TR2.

All the best

Just returning to my post #18478 above; no.58 is Barry Woodland on a Mk6 RG with the trendy hand-fairings (I fitted one of those fairings to my X7 250!) and below is Stu on his Mk7.

Personally I love black and white and this TR2/TD look''s so clean and precise
philippe7
It is my understanding that the main difference between the TD2 and the TR2 is that the TD2 still had the vertically-split crankcases whereas the TR2 had the horizontally-split crankcases that became common to the 250 and 350 production racers from the following model onwards ( TD3-TR3 ) . A major difference from a technical point of view, but one which I admit is rather difficult to spot in a pic of the machine in action ! lol.gif

Based on the size of the expansion chambers, I do agree though that chances are it's a 350.
Coupe Kawasaki
It appears to have the fins of a TR rather than a TD2, the TR has more square heads although the fins are curved out ward so that looks like a TR to me smile.gif I've got some heads from a DS6 and a YR1...I think the frame was different on this bike anyway and the brake looks the same.

David
7okai
Yep, 350 TR2.

Longer pipes and square fins. The other difference was the chain on the 250 TD2 was on the right hand side. Same rear hub, fitted the opposite way round.

I also notice the Girlings, which must have been an improvement over the original units.

A fabulous photo.

Hi gents, not directly related to the Yam question, but I think that's the meeting where lutonboy gave the Weslake twin it's one and only outing, which ended after a couple of miles..

Great to see that old Manx on the grid next to Ago's MV. I think I can solve this one!
The bike is one of Jeff Boniface's Manxes (Jeffs Motor Spares) which were so ably ridden by Paul Selleck, Brian Hussey and I think, Tom Newell, in the seventies. Bemsee regulars from that period (Mick Robinson?) should remember them. Motors were prepared by Phil Kettle, and despite their scruffy appearance, they were quick! They were transposted in an equally scruffy, huge pink box van called the "Pink Panther"!
I'm pretty sure it's Paul Selleck in the photo, but I will consult with a friend of mine (Dave Jose) who was very much part of that circle, for confirmation.

(I remember a small picture painted on the seat of one of the bikes - of a tap, filling a kettle with water - for "Phil Kettle"! roflmao.gif ).

Talk (well mention of) Tom Newell. My first Manx in '73 on my trusty ( down.gif ) Greeves Silverstone saw me awake all night prior to the first practice (Monday morning) laying, trying to sleep, a sleeping bag in a tent in the Paddock Hotel hoping for rain and an excuse not to go out. The morning dawned, eventually about 11 o'clock, but we were on the grid, well warming ( frown.gif ) up area in rain and fog at about six fifteen.

I tip toed accross the mountain slower than a final assent on Everest, when in a thunder of noise and spray Tom came surfing past up the mountain mile on his Norton. R cool.gif espect
