Avus was on the outskirts of Berlin; that was the track with the huge brick-paved banking which was used for the 1959 German car GP.
Regarding Stu's query about the track at Modena; it was indeed a combined airfield and circuit, called the Aeroautodromo, and was used by Ferrari and all the other teams and manufacturers from northern Italy for testing. There was a non-championship F1 race there in the late '50s and early '60s, but it closed in the '70s when Ferrari built their private test track at Fiorano, and is now a municipal park.
