I remember staying with Kel Carruthers in about 76, he had the bike Saarinen won Daytona on, i sat on the bike and could not for the life of me work out how he could ride it with the clip ons how they were.

Obviously suited him fine

all these pics are BRILLIANT,but got me thinking whether all pics should be of racing,OK i'll try to explain what I mean,to me some of the most evocative pics are those that show mums, dads and mates(some of whom will no longer be with us)with cars, tow vehicles and other competitors in back of shot. These really remind me of my early days at race meetings when money was tight, bit like now really......Anyone else agree ?
Regards to all.

Hi carrotcruncher, these pics show most of the above mentioned things (my mum, my dad, his mates, trailers, cars etc...and more importantly me, as a brainwashed 6 year old love.gif )

Brilliant pics Nigel!! up.gif
I thought at first the rider with blonde hair looked like Mick Patrick, but seeing part of the front of his face not so sure now?
Len, can you remember who they are?
Must of been exciting growing up in your household Nigel!!? biggrin.gif wave.gif

Morning Nigel,

I remember that damp and foggy day at Silvestone only to well!!!

Great pics Lambo, no wonder you're such a victim, being indoctrinated at such an early age ! Same for me, life was simple until I was subjected to a major assault on the senses, a tight, round-the-houses road race, a field of snarling, unfettered British bangers, and a healthy waft of Castrol R..... gone, irretrievably..... clap.gif at age 7...

Of course it was exciting for him, what did you expect!!!. (lol) It's me with the blond hair, Tommy Thirwell is the rider on bike No 9 ,my wife Kay sat on the bike and my mate Pat and of course a very young Nigel.

Did the Transits have York or Perkins Diesel's? My Tranny aged me 10 years with its York Engine refusing to start and slowly bellowing smoke and oil all over the UK and Europe. Can laugh about it now but bloody hell it was a heap of shite.. lol.gif

This was on the old thread along time a go.....but it sums up the world of Club racing in the 1970's, the bike, the van, the rider inside, and you can just see his little baby sitting probably on his wifes knee!! 1976?

It started earlier than that for me, with the Norton Command that my dad raced a few years before that.

Previous to that, my dad had to sell his AJS 7R when my mum was pregnant with me, to buy me a pram!...what a terrible thing to have to happen to a racer!

Hi Stu, my dad had an old Thames van, that they had to leave the internal bonnet off, so they could pour the oil into it whilst still travelling along!
We had an Iveco 60-10, that decided to crap itself in the paddock entrance at Donnington when I was doing the support race for the Brit GP. Luckily dad managed to get it going again, but spent nearly all of the first day of qualifying fixing it.

Hi Barry,
Is it not so much the colour of the rose rather than the 'variety'? Could it be Richard Rose at Cadwell Parks mountain?
Cheers,
Dave

I struggled to get good transport in the 70's and always wondered how my Australiasan forebearers got on. i eventually heard the story that the trick was to hire a Transit or similar for the weekend, head down to Dover and on arriving on the continent give it a "Team Paint Job"..on occasions "borrow" some French/Dutch number plates and "Bobs your Uncle".....new Transporter for the year. cool.gif Must have been a great time if not a little dishonest ( all in the name off sport)..
