Just the '76 series in general, Cameron and rider Pierce were given a start at the Moto Journal 200 at Paul Ricard, then got a lift in Cliff Carr's van to England for the Transatlantic Series. There is also a mention in that story of a crash Sheeney had at Oulton Park, where he crashed his 750 Suzuki but refused to let go of the bars for fear of more leg damage, hung on and "waterskied" the bike through two corners, pulled it up, remounted and finished the race...... then, upon getting back to the pits, climbed on the 500 and went out and won a support race.... cool.gif

Found this, a lap of Chimay a few weeks a go, what a circuit!! some of you may have raced there in the 70,s?
I know Rob Hall was there a few weeks ago, I was looking for those videos Rob, posted on YouTube of the 250/350 race, can you put up link if they are to hand?
Meanwhile take a look at this!

Crikey, that was a blast!
But which configuration is the circuit? The below site says the current track is under 3miles long, but that must be a longer one in the video?

I was lucky enough to have ridden the old Chimey circuit (1960 - 1984 version, which was 10.5 kms long). The circle (at 0:30 in the vid) wasn´t there then, and neither was the bus stop chicane (at 3:07). Also, when I was there, the pits were on the short straight exiting the village, and not around the following corner as it is now.
It was very, very fast, and needed very precise timing in order to get those blindingly fast sweepers spot on. Certainly not for the feint hearted, which, beside the fact I wasn´t very good, was another reason I never shaped I suppose lol.gif.
Great fun though.

Hi Rhodie & others . IIRC At Chimay there was a corner( cant remember the name?)by the church yard that you had to lift your head and put it under the bubble other wise you would hit hay bales?

Don´t remember that Julian, although, to be fair, I would probably been on a different line to the fast boys. blush.gif
I think the most vivid memory I have of Chimey was an incident that occured in, I think, 1979. A rider in the 750 race fell off his rotweiler entering the fast right hander that led onto the short pit straight, but the bike somehow recovered and continued around the bend. Obviously, with no rider aboard, it didn´t straighten up on the exit of the corner, but rather, continued with the same angle of lean which took it directly into the pit wall ( there was no barrier between the road and the pits) where all the mechanics and helpers were standing, this at around 180kph. I was standing about 30 meters higher up the pit wall and remember seeing the bike exit the turn without a rider aboard. It missed Frank Sheene and, I think, Don McKay, who was working for Barry at the time, by a couple of inches, but the unfortunate fellow next to them was hit by the bike, with fatal consequences. It really brought home the fact that the whole thing wasn´t at all well thought out by the organizers. It could well have been this crash that resulted in the change of the pit location.

It was run this year on the old circuit which is approx 6 miles long. We were averaging approx 110 mph laps which is some going on a tz 350 as there was one 1st gear corner and an almost dead stop chicane that is put in just before beachamps corner as otherwise you would approach this corner flat out in top and it is totally lined with armco (no runoff at all ) so any problems with the brakes or get it wrong and I think you would feel quite lucky if it just hurt a lot !!!. Would love to take the 750 round there and it gives you some insight as to what a lot of the old gp circuits must have been like.

I remember that - tho think it was earlier than '79, poss '76 or 77. I was signalling on the pit wall ( not that there was one - just a piece of armco, I think, and about to walk back across the pit lane (again, such as it was) and then a TZ750 tank flies over my head, shortly followed the bike on its side on the deck at 100mph. I remember Franco broke his leg, but a guy lost his - sorry to be brutal but it (the leg) was lying in front of me. Remember my Dad running over, taking off his shirt and covering it. Thing that most sticks with me tho, was the chap who turned up two hours later lookig to return the shirt - needless to say it wasnt in a condition to be accepted.

Sorry if that s a bit horrid, but it just came to me reading about Chimay again.

Just for the record the unfortunate rider involved was Belgian Hervé Regout , whom I remember being a member of the big Sarome sponsored team with Orban, Mortimer and of course Katayama - so I think 1977 would be about right.

yes well said Dennis I feel very much the same ( count it a privilage to have been on the start grid with him) , didn't really appreciate his greatness ( although always respected him), but was not over awed by him at the time. perhaps with hindsight I might have felt more humble at the time but if I didn't think I could win I probably would not have got to the grid in the 1st place if that makes sense

A great circuit, I think we were there 83 & 84?, flat nearly everywhere on a TZ250 average around 125mph
if I recall correctly. Sheene was the outright lap record holder at the time at 135mph.
The time keepers had myself & Kim Barker mixed up at one point in practice (same colour scheme), breaking the outright record on a 250 !!
We enjoyed the publicity until they realised the mistake.
The video is great, thanks to whoever posted it, brings back good memorys.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OGTDGiLfGUE
I recall (prior to some chicanes), at just after 3:12 (on video), we took the right hander & just cut into the forcourt of the garage on corner, still there I see!
Then it was flat for the quicker guys all the way down to the right (3:50), before the start line.
The Belgium version of the NW200 wink.gif
Nice to see use of the original track, shame about the chicanes though :\

Yes the place must have been excellent without the chicanes. What was the first corner like???.
It,s now a roundabout but not only is it quite tight but it has a hump in the middle so you have to take it at a speed that allows you to turn the bike after the wheels are back on the ground. The garage forecourt is still there at beachamps but is now very bumpy (as is most of the circuit ) so it limits the speed through there. The track is still in good condition after the village of salles and the run up past the chapel is excellent with the fast kink at the chapel and the flat in top left hander afterwards. I just wish I had ventured out of the UK when I was racing in the seventies and done some of these meetings when I was a young man but what the hell its a bonus to be back racing now and be able to enjoy my racing all over again !!!.

Great lads, still both in Lincoln area, Paul has done some track days recently.
We all grew up in the same village & yes your description is accurate lol.gif
Paul started on Vic Camp 250 Suzuki & Kim straight onto a 125 Honda (Water cooled I think).
Both were impressive at the early club meetings & went on to the Honda 125 championship rounds.
Kim won at least one Pro /am race & Im sure they were both in the very first race at Donington. Which I
Sat at home & watched on TV, mesmorised drunk.gif What a race, would like to see a video of that one again.
Won by ???? Im sad to say Ive forgotten his name, he lost his life at Mallory soon afterwards?
Kevin Wrettom ?

I remember at Chimay, they used to turn on the Paddock PA (local radio) at about 5:30 am, until
Paul threatened to cut the wires. Did the trick though, the organisers took note & did turn it on at a more reasonable hour clap.gif

On another subject - Today, Ive been training a class (Gas Turbines, boring stuff really),
However at the end of the day one of the Guys, said "You may know my dad - Graham Wood!!!"
Be nice if someone Had some pics of the ex Fowler Yamaha star? As I recall he had both TZ750 & 500.

Very old fashioned sit up style he had?

Steve, do you remember the 1983 Powerbike Int televised Saturday race, MCN/Shellsport? when Graham & Wayne Gardner had a coming together on the first lap, Graham's bike went over the fence if I remember right on the exit of Clearways!!
Race was stopped and then restarted without them, causing heart attacks to the people making the SpaceRiders film, as Gardner was supposed to be Freddie Spencer!! eek.gif (who in the film was a Japanese rider..name forgotten again!! Mike help!!!?)

I cant recall that incident, but was probably quite busy with 250 heats, final & pro/am.
Been up in the loft !!!!
The World of sport race saturday (international Gold cup 16/17th April) Won by K.Huewen, 2nd Bob Smith
3rd Digger, then Rob Mac, Mark Salle, Roger Marshall, Stavros, Graham Wood, Mick Grant & Joey in 10th.
Cris Guy has the fastest lap 1:15.38 ............I gues he crashed ;)
Found another programme from July & there was also a Televised race on Sat, unfortunately no results marked. frown.gif
That April Meeting was a big learning curve for me, dicing for the lead with Donny Robinson, Alan Carter & Steve Williams. Donny & Steve were just that little bit better than Me & Alan & started to pull away, there pace was awsome. I was already lapping nearly 2 secs faster than I had ever done, I was very much pushing my ability at that time. Alan put up a chase (fresh from Winning the french GP), but he (we) were outclassed that day. Alan ended up with a spectactular highside at Coppice. Donny & Steve were world class that day, with steve getting the new lap record at 1:17.55. I had a great dice with Donnie McLeod & just pipped him for 3rd. I learnt a great deal from the dice with Donnie, he was so quick into Macleans, it was scary!
Anyway...just waffling now lol.gif

Waffle away!!...its great.wink.gif

Always thought Graham Wood was a very underrated rider.

I just checked out the Chimay track on Google Maps.
50°3'19"N 4°18'14"E should put you on the start line up.gif

The first corner "Roundabout" simply wasnt there, as I recall just flat from the start &
There was a bit of a blind rise.
I do remember the fast left before the village, a lot of people were slow round there, & a good place to make up time. The next right was a bit tighter I think, & taken with a little care as run off was a curb then wall!
The rest looks as was, without any of the chicanes.

Going back to Jeffs comment, I too think Graham Wood was underated. Certainly at the time I was surprised
he retired when he did, end of 84??. Being a young pup I was a bit naive to common sense etc. why would anyone stop racing lol.gif
Will have a chat with his lad tommorrow, I may even ask for his autograph wink.gif

Wow, bringing it all back now, as people have said, keep waffling, please.

Just popped up to the inner sanctum. Allow me to elucidate on the July WoSport race.
Top 10 were Gardner, Marshall, Huewen, Bob Smith, Salle, Grant, Parrish, some bloke called Avant, Slingham and Yer Maun in 10th again. FL to the Big H at 1.14.92, 94.05 mph.
The Sunday boasted a top quality international field and gave wins to
250 - Teryo Fukuda from Ivan Gray and John Brindley (didn't TF have a good run at the Silverstone GP that year?)
F1 race - The Burly Humbersider hinself, from Granty and Digger
350 - Donnie Mac from Graham Young and Ivan Gray, with Herve Guilleux 4th, and Kenny Irons 5th. Roger Burnet 6th Alan North 7th Trevor Nation 8th and Phil Mellor 9th,and Steve Wright 10th. What a top 10! Add to that a certain number 84, who retired in the race but went on to much greater things on 4 wheels. No peeking at the prog now.... Quite what happened to Carter my prog doesn't recall.
Shell 500 - Marshall, Roche, Smith, Pellandini, Avant, Sheene, Lingham, Hyvarinen, Alan Irwin and Steve Henshaw. Philippe Coulon 12th.
250 - Carter, Mcleod, North (replacing J Sayle) Guilleux, Williams, Mcgregor, Fukuda, Paul Tinker, G Young and Wright.
F2 - McGregor, Des Barry, T Rutter, B Smith

What a day....
GD66
And a fair chance that's Sheeney's mechanic Ken Fletcher that Jeff's passing in the pits, not many others had a skull of rust like that. wink.gif

Must be Damon Hill?

Fukuda was one of the 11 riders in the incredible 250 race at Silverstone 1983

Ref Suzuka's description of Donington 250 race. It was scary for me as well - I was there (on the track) !!

Been reading the forum for a long time and posted a few times. It is brilliant, with so many familiar names posting with so much knowledge and great pics. Been reluctant to post too often as I don't have any pics to contribute.

Good to be reminded of some of the characters in the paddock back then (e.g. Paul & Kim Barker). Try this link
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mi4tllF499M&feature=related.

Also brought back memories of Chimay. Raced there once (probably about 1982/83). Facilities were a bit basic and corners a bit fast! Myself and Mark Salle asked the organiser when the showers would arrive (as promised in the regulations). He said about 6pm. Sure enough it rained VERY hard at 6pm!! Showers never did arrive.

Don't want to introduce myself just yet. Thought it might be a bit of fun to get the 'experts' guessing!
I raced against Suzuka (Steve ), Jeff (Sayle), Yendor and possibly Rob H (if he ever raced at Elvington). Probably been at same events as Stu, but can't remember being in same race.
