Thanks Graham,

I knew Roger fairly well. I don't think I ever met a more enigmatic character in my time racing. He built my motors for me from the early TZs in 1978 until the RG in 1982. His bikes were so clean and well put together but whenever he rode, which was very rare, he dug out those scabby old leathers and helmet which were, even then, years old.

I remember him co riding an RG with Steve Henshaw at Brands in an FIM 6 hour race. Immaculate RG, Steve H well turned out and Roger in his manky old leathers! They finished 3rd if I remember rightly.

Roger had the habit of being so blunt he was often downright rude but you couldn't help really liking the guy. A proper character who would have no way on God's earth fitted in with modern racing. Fond memories.

I'd forgot that - thanks for reminding up.gif
It was 1979 & the RG finished 4th. There's a photo sequence of the start in Motocourse 1979 where you can see Steve climbing aboard from a low Q position & standing away from the track the familiar figure of Roger Keen. IIRC it was an exercise to prove a point about the durability of an RG motor. Sonauto had also used an OW31 in another round. Quick & perhaps not so fragile as you'd imagine?

Graham Godward and I were the circuit commentary team out at Westfield for that endurance race.

I kept a lap chart throughout the race and had the RG as third when they were officially credited after the race with 4th place. They used my lap chart to protest their 4th place and to the best of my knowledge were eventually credited with 3rd.

I'm, sure you're right Tony, I just looked in Motocourse results, incidentally list the riders as Lee/Henshaw rolleyes.gif There's a tendency to believe what you read - but we all know about that wink.gif
picblanc
How do Motocourse get from Keen to Lee? Or was Roger a sub for Mr Lee (Alan?) Must admit Mike if I read it in Motocourse I would accept it as "true" perhaps it is as fallible as every other publication? ohwell.gif

I partnered Simon Buckmaster in that race on CB900 Honda sponsored by North London Motorcycles, IIRC a Sonauto TZ750 practiced for the race but never started. Rocket Ron was'nt a popular boy that day, he passed me up the hill out of Dingle Dell and then dumped the Honda Britain F1 he was sharing with Alex George right in front of me at Stirlings. As you would expect they were leading by a country mile at the time, I think me and Simon finished about 13th or so.

Well, it seems that "tout vient à point à qui sait attendre" , meaning "everything finally comes to him who can wait"......Many years ago - 6 years exactly - I asked a question on the original nostalgia thread which I never managed to find the answer to ....

QUOTE (philippe7 @ Jan 6 2006, 13:15) *
I've always been wondering something : as we all know , the components of the engines of the 750 BSA Rocket-3 and of the 750 Triumph Trident were basically the same , with the only difference ( apparently purely for marketing reasons....) being that the Triumph cylinder block was strictly vertical, whereas the BSA cylinders were slightly tilted forward . Does anybody know wether those technical difference were kept on the RobNorth framed racing bikes , or if the racing department only used one single engine base for the racers, with only a different branding ?

And yesterday, on the french pit-lane.biz forum, the following article by Mick Woollett was posted

Hallelujah ! Now, I know, and I'm happy... smile.gif
