It is the Varsselring at Hengelo in 1981, tight/narrow ? not for guys like Boet van Dulmen who learned racing on the N.M.B. (Nederlandse Motorsport Bond) streetcircuits mostly half as wide as Hengelo.

If you like to see more than 100 Dutch circuits have look at www.wegcircuits.nl from Rob Semmeling.

I used to come across Ian Ratcliffe when I bought my Avgas. He used to be one of the bosses at Popham airfield Nr. Basingstoke, and as far as I know would propably still be there if any of his old mates wanted to catch up with him.
(Just another piece of useless info.) On that note does anyone know what has happened to Phil, he hasn't posted for a while, and the humour level has dropped a bit!

Hi Dennis, it would have been during that period too, I finnished racing in 96. He took over operations after Charlie Church, who owned the airfield, was killed when he crashed his Spitfire.
Ian Was the bald headed guy that would walk around with the air traffic control radio.

Stu following Boet V D. Didn´t see the race, but no way Stu won lol.gif . Nobody beat Boet or Jack on those tracks, not even Stu. wave.gif clap.gif
Thanks for that, I have not got any pics from the Dutch Street Races and it was a big part of my life. It wasnt to difficult for me as we were brought up on NZ road circuits. You are right thou, Boet and Jack were unbeatable and if you had, the crowd would have probably jumped the fence and kicked you!!

Was that Linda from Suzukis husband, Ian?

Bobo did me some damage once. We were at Spa in 82 and he had run out of brake pads. He begged me for a set and I gave him my last set of Ferodo's. He came back to my caravan with a couple of beers to say thanks. I decided to share one with Mark Sale and at the same time show him how I could take the top of without an opener. Head broke off the bottle and stabbed me betwen the thumb and first finger. Of to the notorious field hsopital at Spa and 5 stitchs with out anesthetic, lovely. Then back to the paddock, cap in hand, to work out with my mechanic how to shape a handgrip so I could still race. Chased Rocket Ron on the NSR500? 4 stroke the next day and did ok. It had a lot of power but was a bitch to stop so all went well..

Oh, all right for some!

Just had a look at your site too Mike, awesome work. One thing I did notice was how the car guys designs were much simpler, with bold colours, as opposed to a lot of the bike decals with air brush style transfers that seem to be the go these days and unless you are really up close can not see them anyway.

Thanks Nigel and yes, the old style in cars was different. I do believe you're correct too, as the complex stuff is less visible & distinctive. The trends that started in Motocross soon followed into Road Racing, yet the car helmets have lagged behind. From the moment the helmet manufacturers turned to transfers & decals, although better for them economically, I knew there were problems ahead!

If you think about how we can id riders in some of those tiny photo "WWW" on this thread, I'm sure we'd struggle to do the same with the current lot sad.gif

Wow, this site is amazing. I knew Ron Kirkham. Somewhere in the dark recesses of my memory, that pic stirred a dulled brain cell. You´ve seen that guy, it said. Nah, said my other brain cell. Then, when you told us who it was, the wall between my two brain cells crumbled and I remembered. Ron Kirkham, dear oh dearie me. Wonder whatever became of him? lol.gif

That's fine Graham, so the first rostrum (with Lucky) for Cagiva was Mugello 1978.
I find this interesting as I can't find one single reference in any of the Motocourse reports for a Cagiva & all the stats show both riders on Suzuki. There are a few colour shots of the bike with the elephant on the side. I think it odd, considering all the others are either Yamaha or Suzuki, the reports don't make a mention of a "new" Italian bike. Off to look in the 79 issue.

As it happens, I have the programme for this race, so I can mark your answers...

The Cagiva: The sources I’ve been looking at describe Lucchinelli’s 1978 bike as either a Suzuki or a Cagiva-Suzuki. I think you’re right and it wasn’t yet the real deal.

OK, right so far:
1 Alblas* (not Agostini), 4 Cecotto, 9 George, 15 Hartog, 21 Länsivuori, 22 Lucchinelli, 23 Newbold, 34 van Dulmen, 38 Williams (not Ekerold)

* A hint here is that a lot of the numbers seem to have been allocated alphabetically.

Looking at the 78 book reminded me Steve Baker rode for Nava Olio Fiat that year Suzuki in the GP, but I think a TZ750 in the F750 series - did you go to the round at Brands Graham?
Baker was Canadian - wasn't he? Just that on the Highsider he's down as American.
subh
11 is not Ferrari, but you have identified him correctly - it looks like an 11 but is 12 on the bike.

Same with Herron - not 47 but it is him and number is 17.

No need for guesses on 2 Roberts and 7 Sheene...

If I remember rightly he was supported by / run by Yamaha Canada in 1977 (and quite possibly before that too) but was from the US.

Thats what I thought Mike but I read about this in Classic racer and it says that he rode in the Canadian Yamaha colours because of his connection but is actually from the U.S. :\

Yes Andy I was convinced but then I remembered "Bellingham" for some reason. Trivial pursuits lol.gif The other part I forgot was that Yamaha dropped him at the end of 77. I wonder what that was all about?

Agreed, they always had the "pure Yamaha " paint jobs. My pal was at Spa recently for the the classic meet and had some video which he brought round last week. Baker looked like he just popped out of the Yamaha production line the day before..going back a few pages I reckon Sarrons Yamaha 250 has the most beautiful lines as did the Pernod. Far better looking than the current 250's..

Hi,

Børge W Nielsen from Denmark (number looks like 24) is behind Tom Herron and almost next to Katayama (number 8?), in the right side of the picture it looks like Max Wiener from Austria number thirty something.

Can’t find myself behind the wall roflmao.gif , I was there did not qualify in the 250 and it was also the last year on the long street circuit.
