Ah ! I get a chance to play before you all wake up in Europe

This is a fairly rare shot of frenchman René Guili on his RG Mk1 in 1976 - René was a fairly big fellow ( he still is today, even bigger actually ! ) and was not much at ease on anything smaller than a 750TZ or a RCB941 Honda .

René is a survivor, he suffered twice very severe head injuries, the first one at Rouen in 1974 when he lost his helmet and ploughed head-on into the guard rail - after a couple of days in coma he woke up and made a full recovery . A few years years later, while riding in the Paris-Dakar rallye, he was found laying in a deep coma besides his crashed bike, was carried for hours - more like a body than a badly injured person - on the roof of a competitor car in the desert and, when found to be still breathing when the car arrived at the check point, was put into a medical plane and flown to a hospital in Paris, where he amazingly woke up ( again ! ) many weeks later, and made a decent - if not full - recovery . He's been seen riding a TZ750 again in various classic meetings those last years - like in the picture linked below, at the 2002 Coupes Moto Légende at Montlhéry

Thanks for the story Philippe. Yes, I too remember Rene. Am I correct in saying he was French 750 champion in 1974? BTW, his Rouen crash was a year later if I recall correctly, in 1975. I didn´t know about his other near miss though. Lucky lad.

Do we know what time of year this was, just trying to work out why i would have had a plain white fairing?? Apart from the obvious, i must have crashed somewhere before and did not have time to get it painted??? Or i had no money!!!

You're right Rhodie, the bad Rouen crash was in 1975 - ironic in a way, since Rouen the previous year was the place he really surprised many people by being the only one able to follow - and challenge - Barry Sheene for the lead - a feat he repeated a few weeks later at Magny Cours for the "Trophée du Million " - as I said earlier, it seems that he had found in the new TZ 700 the bike ideally suited to his size, weight...and talent !

Its also a cool pic from our era that proves that even on old cross ply tyres we used to hang 'em on the deck. Great shot of two racers going for it in my opinion...

Absolutely Stu, especially there, at the start of Clearways. I found that a point where you could lose the front easily if you didn't get some power on early enough, and if you were too heavy with the power easy to hi-side! sad.gif

Barry Ditchburn fans will be interested to know he's back in action again this weekend, he's entered in the 500 post-classic class of the Historic roadrace nationals at Barbagallo Raceway, Western Australia (Wanneroo ),on a 3-cylinder "Broad Yamaha" in a Seeley chassis, instead of his normal Suzuki TR500 Seeley, and he's built up an identical one for his son Craig, they look lovely, and seem to be going well too. Also of interest is the addition to classic ranks of newly-crowned World Superstock 1000 Cup winner Brendan Roberts on a G50 Matchless, ex-World Superbike campaigner Robbie Phillis on a GSX1100 and a TZ350, Australian champ Dave Cole on a McIntyre G50, and Australian sidecar and historic solo champ Peter Guest, on a Norvin and a Z1R. Those wishing to follow proceedings can do so on the net, each race result will be entered as the finishers cross the line on natsoft.com.au. With a 200-bike entry, it promises to be a ripper ! cool.gif
Patrick Fletcher
Wish I was there GD66 but we have to keep the competitors happy back at Base Broadford.
Hope that all goes well for a great meeting.

Thanks Patrick, same to you. Maybe we can have that TNF Australian get-together at the Island Classic !

Saw an advert in the current Classic Bike mag last week - someone was asking for "offers between £75 - £100" for 175 road racing programmes from 1960 to 1980! I was too late - they had already been snapped up frown.gif . What a bummer! (There are some interesting ones popping up on ebay at the moment - maybe it's them?). I sold my own collection (1965 - 1975) a few years ago and bitterly regret it now cry.gif

Hailwood , Ago , Lutonboy (BTW where are you ?? ) Ivy , Renzo Passolini , Scheiddeger , Mike Duff , Remo Venturi etc etc BUT cannot find Daytona + IOM progs mad.gif

I kept all mine (1979 Powerbike excepted, what a plum!!)
I cant match the great Hailwood, Ivy, Passo, Scheidegger etc, but I have Barry Sheene a few times, Phil Read, Agostini, Ballington, Hennen, Katayama, Carr, Dave Potter and a couple I really treasure Phil Haslam & Piers Forester, amongst many others. Got a few modern ones too, though not keen on the habit of putting their number after the signature, though I can see the benefit with some that are a bit of scribble!!

This was a rented cottage after a split up with a previous girlfriend . the estate that I rented it from told me that it not been ihabbited for several years before I moved in, but supposedly sorted the electrics and damp out. Well the water imersion heater was right in the roof, and after being their for 15 months the water heater shorted and set fire to the thatch. The Fire brigade recloned the thatch had been burning a full 24 hours before the wind got up and then the roof burnt down within 3 hours! rolleyes.gif ( had 6 fire engines and 3 water tenders in attnednece, the local tv crew askied me how i felt, well apart from wanting to ram the mike down his throat, I was very tempted to say "gutted" what do you expect? mad.gif
dogs and I got out fine . lost 3 Goshawk chicks that died of smoke inhalation, had been trying to breed them for over 10 years rolleyes.gif also lost nearly all my stockfor my business and my worldly goods I could not get insurance House hold or business at the time on rented , thatched properties frown.gif any way that is all in ythe past but you can imagine , I get a little nervous whe ever I smell buring straw eek.gif
