That's fine Graham, so the first rostrum (with Lucky) for Cagiva was Mugello 1978.
I find this interesting as I can't find one single reference in any of the Motocourse reports for a Cagiva & all the stats show both riders on Suzuki. There are a few colour shots of the bike with the elephant on the side. I think it odd, considering all the others are either Yamaha or Suzuki, the reports don't make a mention of a "new" Italian bike. Off to look in the 79 issue.

According to the programme for the Dutch TT, which was held a week before the Belgian race, Lucchinelli rode a Suzuki with Cagiva listed as his entrant. I can only assume that this arrangement continued for the whole of 1978.

The 1994/95 edition of Motocourse makes reference to the first Cagiva appearing in 1979, although this was based upon a Suzuki. It was rumoured that a crankcase had mysteriously disappeared from the Suzuki headquarters in 1978 - the 1979 Cagiva used copies of this crankcase surmounted by various production RG500 components.

I think 39 could be John Woodley, and 14 looks like Jack Findlay. I'm pretty sure that behind Findlay in the yellow & green colours (28 or 29) is Franz Rau.

The Cagiva: The sources I’ve been looking at describe Lucchinelli’s 1978 bike as either a Suzuki or a Cagiva-Suzuki. I think you’re right and it wasn’t yet the real deal.

OK, right so far:
1 Alblas* (not Agostini), 4 Cecotto, 9 George, 15 Hartog, 21 Länsivuori, 22 Lucchinelli, 23 Newbold, 34 van Dulmen, 38 Williams (not Ekerold)

* A hint here is that a lot of the numbers seem to have been allocated alphabetically.

Make Ekerold #48 then but still in the same place. 3 above Boet V D wave.gif

OK it might be a "Suzuki" inside but not much else was? and Cagiva is on the paint work, so maybe not a 100% Cagiva but not a Suzuki either? :\

I believe the first GP ever for an authentic Cagiva was the 82 Yugo GP in Rijeka. I´m not sure why it was debuted so late in the season, as Rejeka was in the second half of the championship year.
It was a square 4, designed by, I think, an engieer named Mascaroni. Don´t know his first name. I found this pic from that race in Manfred Mothes great site. I hope I´m allowed to reproduce it here.

Michael Scott wrote the following, which pretty much confirms what you said:

“Cagiva’s racing history is littered with strange tales hinting at technical piracy and secret liaisons with supposed rivals: the charge is that they caught up with the Japanese (eventually) not merely by copying them, but by actually using the same component dimensions. This suggested a more or less covert exchange of drawings or even parts, especially with Yamaha. It is common knowledge that many intimate parts of their second-generation 1987 V4 - parts such as crankshafts and pistons - were interchangeable with Yamaha components; there were also parallel chassis developments, notably the banana-curved arched swing arm of 1988, that seemed far too similar to be a coincidence.

“Claudio Castiglioni, the brother with the higher public profile, was always staunch in his denials that there was any link whatsoever with Yamaha, or with anybody else. Yet tales of skulduggery had been with Cagiva right from the very start, including a persistent belief that the disappearance of a works Suzuki crankcase from the team’s British headquarters in 1978 was closely linked with the appearance in 1979 of the first ‘Cagiva’, which appeared to have copy square-four crankcases, surmounted by a collection of freely available Suzuki RG500 production racer components. The bike was ridden by Scotsman Alex George, managing a couple of 13th-placed finishes before disappearing into history.

“They were back in 1980 with the new Cagiva painted in the proud red-and-silver colours of the old MV team. There were other MV links too, including team boss Arturo Magni, who now filled the same role at Cagiva. This was a different machine, but still not entirely their own. On top of an in-line four Yamaha crankcase they’d put their own cylinders, without exhaust valves but with reed-valve induction. This was an early use of a system that took three or more years to become the class norm. But the bike was raced only once, at the Nürburgring on 24 August, in the hands of Virginio Ferrari. He qualified 25th, well off the pace.”

You’re doing well for Belgium 1978. More right answers:

8 Katayama, 10 Coulon, 14 Findlay, 24 Nielsen, 28 Rau, 30 Rougerie, 39 Woodley.

Yes on Rossi (29) and Wiener (37) and Ekerold (40 not 48 but they are difficult to see).

Someone suggested Ireland for number 46, but he isn’t in the programme and the entry goes up to 45. Could be a late entry, or maybe it’s the number 45 rider you’ve seen?
