I did not know that he was no regular rider for the Johnson 350cc team in 1982 - that makes the thing even more remarkable, as Didier de Radigues was still fighting for the 350cc title at the German GP 1982

Actually, that may well be the reason Stefan ....There's a faint bell ringing in my ageing memory that Espié was hired by Alain Chevallier for the last two races in the hope of helping De Radigues win the world title by taking points away from Tony Mang - he finished 4th in Brno, but failed to score in Germany, which did not matter after all since De Radigues retired .

Funny that at the same German Grand Prix, Espié was also part of the "french plot" which helped Tournadre win the 250cc title, with success that time smile.gif

Yes, they did Rhodie, but what I meant was riders who rode Chevallier's with Pernod sponsorship , which Baldé never did * - but which, I just remembered, Eric Saul indeed did in 1980, when his career had almost stalled and Alain Chevallier called him to offer him to take over his brother's own Pernod-sponsored machines, after Olivier's fatal accident. Remarkable, incidentally, that Alain didn't just pack up and go home after his brother's death, but managed to overcome his grief to continue the Chevallier team in memory of Ollie...

* before riding the unsuccessful Chevallier-framed Pernod-engined machine in 1985 , of course

I remember those chevalliers up for sale at one of the racing shows. The racing and sporting show? used to be held at The horticultural halls just off the embankment and then they moved it. I think (come on brain stoned.gif ) it went to chiswick which is where i saw these bikes. I was interested in the 250 which used the hjkl motor. The bike was a beauty and for sale at a reasonable price. This was in Jan 84 i think. So i went and got a decorite rotax, harris beam frame 16' front wheel etc. Hello tarmac!
Not one of my better moves.
Sure i read they are in france now.

Hells teeth! A Decorite...... mad.gif My mate Phil got one of them, what a load of '@*%##'.
We never got it running right, should have kept with the trusty TZ, but it seemed like a good idea at the time!

The Decorite.
Looked the Bo$$ocks in 84 and i was well pleased when i got mine. It was one of the first beam frames and had the pneumatic powervalves.
The bike went great. In a straight line, easily going around the tzeds. In the corners it was, erm, interesting :\ :\
I fell off mine the first time i ran it, running it in at brands. (weds practice of course). Was taking it easy around druids when the front went, and split the fiberglass petrol tank. Stuart melen (remember him?) fell off his the next lap at bottom bend.
Looking back a lot of the blame could be attributed to the michelin tyres who were the only 16' manufacturer at the time. The wets were just as bad. Frustrating after using the dunlops for the previous seasons which never gave much trouble.
I sold mine after one too many crash and broken bones rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

I know, Mick. But there are a lot of tired, twisted bodies in classic racing. Sure, you CAN run and bump 'em. But after you've used a starter a couple of times.... at first, you can take it or leave it, and friends encourage you to try it......then, you rubbish it, and go back to the run and bump.....then you weaken again.....and again....before long, you are pushing people aside to use it again....

Do you have any pics of Andy watts riding for Decorite Graham? , apparently he had a falling out with the owner of the team, over a....personal incident! (but that is another story!!) and never rode it again.

Can also remember little Barry Utting riding the official purple and white Decorite bike for the team, used to struggle to start it though, with the Rotax cylinders firing together and Barry's short legs! (not a good combination)

They actually look the dogs bollocks. I think thou that at this stage no one had calculated flex into the chassis as being part of its overall operation and they were as stiff as hell, hence the lack of feeling in the front end..
