Jeff, what were those Armstrongs like? They looked like mouth watering bits of kit, and bloody fast as well, even if they were a bit finikie I think. I recall Steve Tonkin winning the junior in the IOM around 81/82, so they mus

t have been pretty handy. Mind you, Tonks was no slouch, especially on the Island.

They weren't too bad, not rocket ships, but they handled pretty well, had lots of little problems and never the same thing all the time. If i recall ignition problems were the main problem, can remember 2 occasions where the ignition packed it in on the warm up lap, both times at GPs. That was frustrating, but looking back not a bad bit of equipment.

I didn't realise Andy Bond rode one of those TZ500Js, I take it he didn't have for many seasons!
The only people I can remember doing more than one season with them is Stavros, with the various Mitsui adaptations, Steve Williams (Fowler DTR) and my old mate Royston Keen.

Do you have any photos of these guys on their J's Graham?
picblanc
Only got Graham Wood in 1984, so I presume its a J? they all look the same to me!! rolleyes.gif wave.gif

Yeah, thats one. They were the first model that had an inline four, with 2 cylinders facing forward, and two back.

Graham Wood must have packed in pretty much after this season? would I be right in thinking that?

Andy's bike at the pre-TT brands meeting in '84:

Stavros on the ex-works OW version at the same meeting:

Steve Williams at Mallory in '87 IIRC, with a beam frame rather than the alloy twin-loop ridden by Graham Wood:

Hello! wave.gif
I have been watching this threads for over a year, in fact it has become my first port of call as my laptop hits my ..... lap, every evening. Very good entertainment, thankyou!

I am going to get up to my dad's and dig through his 70's and 80's photos and get some for you to ponder at.
I know that between him and I we should have plenty, including [especially for Nigel] a good few from the good old North Glos days.

Thanks again.

Well, wonderful Wiz, welcome.
Mick Robinson
Tony(Golly)Harris rode a TZ500 exParrish for a couple of seasons, winning the very last "proper" King of Brands. He got a lot of publicity because John Webb didn't want to give him the trophy partially due to Golly looking like a "pikey" !! He eventually was crowned some weeks later due to pressure from the press and solicitors!!! PS Graham, have you any shots from that meeting?

Well Mr Sayle,

I can safely say that you are to blame for at least 30 odd of my many broken bones, my countless bank account emptying crashes, and around 20 odd years of trying to race GP Bikes.

All I have to say to you is:

clap.gif Thank you very much.... I would have not missed it for the world. I used to watch you as a kid, and I guess that is why I got into racing. clap.gif

The guy who owns/runs Celtic racing in the US (they ran Chaz Davies in '07) owns the AKAI Sheene bike and had it on display at many of the US races last year. It is nicely restored but I dont know if he ever runs it.
