Another crappy photo, poor light, but a great smile up.gif Nothing before the Kiwi "designs" which was copied by the Arai factory when he rode the Elf etc. Then later on, I think I did a couple of the JPS helmets, Phil.

Trivia question since all you guys are asleep. How does a Swiss helmet company come up with the KIWI name for there helmets?

I would have thought you'd have known - you wore them! Some folk used to think it was funny I named one of our dogs, Kiwi, after a helmet, but they were wrong, I just liked the name...

Just been reading by chance some of the Motocourse from 76, where you made your 500 debut & came home almost sixth, pipped by Palomo it said..

I was being a smart arse really ( I knew the answer ) because I asked them the question when I signed a deal with them in 1980ish..I was ready for the " oh we did it because Kiwis perform so well in sport or whatever". Turned out the staff were invited to enter a contest to name the new helmet and someone sugested Kiwi..bit of a let down for us NZ'ers............ :\ Mike can you give me a link to your wbsite. thanks

And what about the NZi helmets that some of the GP riders are using now, is there any significance to it?

In answer to your question, I´m not sure he would have been their first champion, but he certainly would have limited Roberts domination from ´78 to ´80. I read somewhere that Tom Herron rated Pat as the best American rider at the time, and from what I saw of him, I would agree with that. No disrespect to Barry, but Barry was forced to play second fiddle to Pat at Suzuki before Pat´s accident. I´ve always admired him for taking on the IOM challenge, even if, in hindsight, it proved to be a mistake. His was a great career stopped in it´s tracks by a very unfortunate accident. Wasn´t the first, and won´t be the last. That´s just motorcycle racing.

A couple of recent ( well, a year old....) photos of Pat here :
http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/news/2007/HOFinduction.asp

Good to see him in a crowd , taking part in a public event. He seems to be doing as well as can be expected , considering the seriousness of his injuries.

As to what may have happened in '78 , I think that he might well have pipped Kenny Roberts for the title that year . Not so much because of his two years of experience of the Continental Circus ( I think Roberts had enough talent to compensate for that ... ) but the Suzuki GB team was probably a stronger and "richer" outfit that KR's team which was basically Kel Carruthers and himself with three bikes ( a 250 , a 500 and a 750....)

But who am I to speak...maybe when Stu wakes up down under, he'll give us some more valid insight...if I'm not mistaken, he and Pat started their Grand Prix carreer on the very same day of March 1976 , on a cold and gloomy Bugatti circuit at Le Mans ( and I was there blush.gif , inside the virage du musée, the loooong left hander after the first hairpin )

Barry had an old personal resentment towards Pat , which dated from before Pat joined the Suzuki GB team - and that did nothing to improve their personal relationship - specially when Pat started to be as quick as Barry ....

Oh, you want to know the story ? Barry told it bluntly in an interview I read in Moto Journal ages ago ...something like " I never hid it from anybody that I could not stand Pat Hennen, because he stole Gary Nixon's place in the Suzuki US team in 1975 by accepting to ride for them for no money. Gary is my friend , and anybody who shoots him in the back is shooting me in the back " ....when you know the level of mutual respect and friendship between Sheene and Nixon, sounds plausible....or maybe a bad excuse made up in retrospect ? We'll never know.....
