What a fantastic thread.

So many great photos that I have never seen before. So much history.

It is also wonderful that there is input from some of the riders that were actually there, doing it, during what I regard as one of the Golden Eras of racing.

Of course, I read the whole thread in one sitting, all 148 pages so far, and joined up, just in case I get lucky and can answer a WWW.

Being in Oz, and seeing that quite a few Australasian members, makes it even more comfortable. I have always been a fan of Stu Avant, Jeff and Murray Sayle. Once, I even mahaged to finish in front of Jeff, back in about 1987 at a wet Symmons Plain meeting.

It has been a while since I have seen you guys, but it is great to catch up in the virtual world. up.gif

To give a clue, here is a pic from the distant past. Another clue, Jeff was probably halfway along the next straight when the pic was taken.

Quick Jeff, close the window, I think I heard Strat pull into the driveway roflmao.gif

Thanks for the welcome.

GD......you must have known, sooner or later, that I would turn up. Good to see you here too.

Philippe....I have never been to New-Caledonia, I understand that it is quite the paradise, you lucky man. I'm slowly sinking my teeth into the other thread. It has everything that I am interested in.

picblanc....it certainly was a big session last night. Worth every minute, though. We used to wait months for the magazines to arrive in the newsagents, just to pore over the "latest" photos of the racers.

Incredible place, wish I had found it earlier.

As I said, I don´t know who it is, but I have a feeling it´s Guy Bertin. I can´t say why. Possibly because of the design of his hat. In later years he had something similar, not exactly the same, but very similar.
I´d like to correct that end result. It was worrying me, and then I remembered a pic Greg gave me of the podium of that race (I posted it up about a year ago) and it was Patrick Fernandez who completed the rostrum in third place, and not Katayama as I originally thought.

Hello, sorry I was asleep while you were having the fun ( that's the issue about living in the south pacific , I can only play "live" with the aussie/NZ gang )

My first feeling too was that it was Guy Bertin, or maybe Philippe Bouzanne - but I wouldn't bet much on that . And my period magazines which could help are in France. Sorry I can't be more definite - hopefully Antony will know ?

Oh and by the way, I didn't remember young Randy had taken part in that race . Thought he had only started full-time the year after ( 1979) with Bimota-Adriatica , then Serge Zago.

I´ve only now realised why I thought the rider (#42) was French. The fairing on his bike was a French version of the TZ fairing. Look at the destinctive hand cowls on the bike in question and also the one in the pic of Guy Bertin that Mr Fu posted. So, if it´s not Guy, Philippe Bouzanne could well be right. Also Mr Fu, Paolo Pileri was on the Morbidelli´s in 78, I´m almost certain.
Randy did several races for Bimota in 1978. I recall seeing him in Misano again that year at an international where he finished 3rd in a race, oddly enough, won by the afore mentioned Pileri on a 250 Morbidelli.

No punters on the Ditchburn pic? OK, it was taken in 1976 in the Imola 200. wave.gif

Being Southern African, and knowing about the great contribution made by the Aldridge family to SA racing, I decided to pop in on them one day while passing, primerely to say hallo. I also heard there might be a few riders there which I thought would also be cool up.gif
Unfortunately, I didn´t get to meet Mr Aldridge, but these likely lads and lady agreed to pose for a pic before I departed. lol.gif Anyone know who the are? wave.gif
