Sorry for letting you just hang there guys. But just after I had posted the pic of the Suzuki rider, the wife told me we were off to the sisters place for the weekend. "Can´t you go alone?" I asked, and immediately wished I hadn´t.
Oh well, we arrived home half an hour ago, and I can now disclose that the rider in the pic is not Les Van Breda. Although Les won several, four I think, SA titles for Suzuki, all in the unlimited class, Gillie Cruse was the first star Suzuki sponsored, and he won them the 50cc championship with Les second. He then followed that up with two 350 titles aboard a 251cc twin, and added an unlimited title aboard the TR 500 air cooled twin he is riding in the pic I posted. He then moved to Honda and campaigned a 750 Daytona, but without the success he had enjoyed with Suzuki. Les took over the top spot at Suzuki and carried on where Gillie had left off.
So the anwer is Gillie Cruse.

Gillie Cruse won his first South African title in 1968 and his second the following year. He received Springbok colours in 1968.

Marius, I stand corrected. I thought Gillie won two 350 titles, but it was indeed only one, as well as the unlimited championship a year later. The 50cc title wasn´t an official one at the time I don´t think, so you are spot on.
Thanks for setting the record straight. up.gif

Tony Rutter is for sure, the last one is also quite easy, Assen "de strubben" (spelling ?), '70 is more likely than '69, I agree...

Good memories, 20 yrs old with possibily the best tech of all time ( Mike Sinclair) in my corner. Mind you i was still trying to work out why it was winter in France when it was summer in NZ...we were a tad naive and at the time a bit lonely. thank heavens for the good guys on the circuit, Pat and Chip Heneen, Jack findlay and his lady, Mortimer, Dodds, Penti and so on. I was so lucky to have that opportunity and if not for this forum you would never think about it all. St Joris, for me anyway, was just about Ray Quincey breaking his back ( my year or not?) and not a lot else..thanks guys

If I remember correctly, the last race held in St Joris ten Distel was in 1980, or, it could have been `81 (I really should know, as I was there blush.gif ), and it also bucketed down that day as well.
The meeting is remembered for what happened after the racing was finished, rather than the races themselves. The riders were told their money would be posted to them, and, as many were relying on their start money to get home, all hell broke loose. I think it was Wil Hartog who was called in to pacify the riders, who, after being assured the money would be forthcoming, decided not to burn the place down. I spoke to several riders the following year and none of them ever received a cent evidently. down.gif
I think that last meeting also resulted in the death of several people, one or two sidecar teams, if I recall correctly. Can anyone expand on that?

Thanks for that Rennmax. How very sad.
I didn´t mean to trivialise their deaths by saying the meeting wasn´t remembered for what happened on track. That statement referred to the results, and not to that terrible accident. I hope that is understood. ambivalent.gif frown.gif

Is it my imagination or has it gone quiet on here the last few days?
Anyway, a good reason to rescue us from page 2.
Please forgive the frequent reference to Southern African riders and events, but that is where I was from.
Not an easy www, but quite a well known figure on the continental circus, even though he didn´t actually race outside of his home territory, where he won a national production championship for Ducati.
He gave the then world champ, Rod Gould, a run for his money when finishing second behind him at Kayalami in 1971.

Hi Rhodie,
I thinking of Keith Pietersen but I am really not sure because Keith did race in the UK. Thinking of the Production title on a Ducati and he a rode 600 Pantah for Presto Parcels.

clap.gif Keith Peterson is correct Peter. Well Done.
I should have known you´d get that as I think he replaced you as Jon´s spannerman in 1980??? He´s probably better known for being the man responsible for Ekerold success, rather than for his own racing career though, which is a bit unfair really, as he was a damn fine rider in his own right. Sadly, as you know he lost his life at Kyalami. frown.gif
I must say I was unaware that he raced in the UK. When was that Peter, and what sort of success did he enjoy?
It´s not widely known, but Keith was Offie Howard´s cousin, and travelled down south (a Rhodesian expression for riders going to race in SA smile.gif) together with his older and more experienced relative more often than not. It was in fact Offie who was his inspiration, and if you compare their riding styles you can see the influence he had on Keith. Compare this pic of Offie with the earlier one of Keith. Definitely two of our best riders in the post Redman, Hocking period.
