Great pic, Murray ! Well, although I won't say I "recognize" anybody for sure, if I apply some logic this would be yourself, Gregg Hansford and Rick Perry somewhere in Australia, sometimes around ....'76 or '77 ? ....and maybe Jeff following on one of his first rides on a 750 TZ
philippe7

A tight chicane, that is, I was going to say Salzburg but it looks even too tight for that .

Pentti Korhonen leading from Paolo Pileri (?), #8 Patrick Fernandez , #22 Matikainen (?), Roland Freymond behind #22 , Michel Frutschi behind Fernandez, #43 Etienne Geraeerd partly hiding Sadao Asami, #37 Donnie McLeod, and #30 Eddie Stöllinger on a KR Kawasaki.

#31 jeff Sayle
philippe7

So, Mc Leod and Stöllinger, I think I read "Donnie Pascoe" on the arms of #31 so would that be you Murray or maybe Jeff, #9 looks like a factory Bimota for Eric Saul (?) , Eero Hyvarinen with #56, Alan North #23 and Ollie Chevallier #10

Oh, and the year 1979 maybe ???

edit : oh yes, and Christian Estrosi's helmet at the very back ( said Christian having just been re-appointed as a minister of the republic on the occasion of the recent french government re-shuffle , after a few months off )

Murray Sayle leading, Gregg Hansford and Rick Perry all on KR750 Kawasaki and Jeff Sayle on his Yamaha TZ750D, 1977 Last Corner Oran Park. Jeff's TZ750D was from Donny Pask in Queensland.

I led for half race distance then the ignition died, Gregg and Jeff raced together to the finish line, Gregg beat Jeff and Rick third.

Jeff may correct this post if I am wrong.

Terrible chicane that was. It was introduced to slow the bikes down as they entered the village after the pit straight in Brno. I drove through there a few years ago and couldn´t believe that before that chicane was introduced, the riders hurtled through there in 6th gear. Scary stuff.

Yes Brno first village flat out in top gear, thats why I think it was the last time they used the track before the new track was used.

Hi Murray,

The track was still used for GP in 1982, found this clip on youtube, if you look good you can see Jeff in there on his Randle Armstrong I found myself there just at the start, remember that after a few laps the ignition on my Rotax gave up, finally when the truck came after the race and picked me up and I came back in the pit, my wife was a nervous wreck, all she knew was that I was missing, we had done some laps earlier during the week in the car, so she knew that it was a bad place if you dropped the bike.

Mats it’s not me with number 56, I wasn’t there in 1979, was there in 1978 though.

Holy moly, I'm not surprised the wife was a wreck. It doesn't look the most forgiving place to lose the front... Racing round there you must have rode <100% surely? It looks more dangerous than the Nurburgring?
Just amazing footage.
And look how many people were there! Incredible crowd.
Sends a shivr down my spine though...

From the same guy, rare footage of the 82 Nogaro boycotted race. Chris Guy, Frutschi's Sanvenero, Paci, Ekerold and Leliard are the obvious spots, I bet you guys can get more...

Yes, a splendid series of clips..... perfect for a rainy sunday morning ( yes, that does happen even in our south pacific paradise islands....)

I like Tournadre's brilliant ride to second place at Brno, with his bog-standard TZ , on a "rider's" circuit.... so much for those who consider his 1982 world title was not really deserved .

Yeah, reminds me of the hay-wire circuits in WWI.. but seriously, I don't reckon the Maico as outright ugly, I think it's a home made special since the cylinder/cylinderhead looks a little bit too big for a 125, and there were no 250 cc Maico production racer.
This one

looks a bit odd to me with the kink in the top tube and the meagre front brake, but the beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or owner)...

I think it's the "classic" Maico scheme

rather standard looking, with the exception of the muffler of course

Edit: Fred Launchbury had quite some success on Maicos in the UK. Does that name ring a bell ?
