The Team Shirtfinkle PR lady Betty Swallocks left soon after someone let it out that "The Cock of the North" was a race meeting and not a rider she thought was joining the team.

Interesting how some people have a distinctive style. Even from the back it could have only been Stavros

I preume the bales are covering the catch fencing poles, even so not a great bit of run off there is it! eek.gif

And how hard is Jon Ekerold on the brakes there ? Front wheel buried, and the fairing point near dragging on the road. Go, son !

There is a catch fence running parallel to the wall . The run off area is larger than it looks like. I rarely have seen a rider making it to the catch fence. Anyway, the corner has been reshaped to a kink 2002 - now there is a giant tarmac run-off.

Yip, I was there that day, but in the tribune on the exit of the Opel curve (the one before the pits). Those shots were taken at the corner exiting the motodrome, after the pits. I posted a shot of that race that I took, on the old thread.
Really odd that first one. Ekerold appears to be looking at someone he knows up in the stands.
Oh, and only one bale fallen down to expose what looks like a solid enough steel pipe fencing pole. eek.gif They weren´t heavy into the old safety in those days, were they.

I think the poles of the catch fences were made of wood - at least it looked that way when I saw smashed examples after a car went into the fencing

Don't be surprised, Mr Fu...Gert Bender self made a 125 at +/-90%, frame and motor..He was a genie like H. Bartol who were some excellent racers-constructors

Just found those pictures on the site http://www.classic-motorrad.de/

The pictures are from 1970 and I am amazed by the amount of hang-off the rider (Adolf Ohligschläger) is applying. Did that style of riding really start that early ? When did the first riders use hang-off ?

What great shots. Knees out and bums off the saddle were common from the early to mid sixties. I've a theory this was due to either the perception or reality that Dunlop triangular tyres were not as grippy, or perhaps lacked feel, as compared to the Avon racing rubber, which had disappered from about 1963. Number 57 rides the TR/D2 much like Paul Smart did around the same time.

Great contrast in style don't you think. The leading rider has the old Mick Grant style and the second is setting a trend as this style is still common today..

The rider in front is Ferdinand Kaczor, by the way. A very promising pilot who sadly lost his life at the Salzburgring in the early 70's. frown.gif
