Fu,

Could it be Snetterton 1975? Can't get anyone from Pic 1. Pic 2 there's Mike Trimby in the Shell leathers and white helmet, and Roger Keene on his right - orange fairing with red helmet - number 176? Pic 3 Mick Patrick on Harold Coppock's 350 Yamaha (easy one though, his name is on the seat!). As for the chap on the barrier - looks familiar but can't think of the name.

It has to be Tony Mang then, although I must confess I don't recognize him at all .

No offense meant to Tony, but is there a reason ( outside of his multiple world titles) why he was called to take part in the Saarinen tribute ? Unlike Nieto, I don't think his path crossed Jarno's in the Grand Prix.... the earliest Mang appears in the results is at the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix, and - strangely enough - on a 350cc "SMZ" ! Any details on that 350 SMZ , Renn ? Was it an updated/overbored version of the famous Maïco-based V-twin 250cc SMZ that he and Sepp Schögl had built for Dieter Braun for the 1971/72 seasons, or a totally different machine with just the same name....

No not me I was riding a 250 in that year, but I can see Julian Soper on Willy Ryans' Crescent, blue/yellow leathers on an orange bike with high level exhausts. Mike Trimby on a 750 Yamaha behind him, the blue twin with the single disc is, I think, the Raceway with a rider I should know usually rode a 500 Kettle Norton. Not Peter Clifford, the red bike is Alan Benalack. Your 'James May' is in fact Ed Curtis brother of Chris and now Newmarket Club chairman.
Just been through my programs for that season of Natonals at Snetterton, Revetts and Hubbard TV Rental and cannot find a set of race numbers that tally from 31st March, 25th May or 13th July

Hi Philippe, don't know why he took part, probably he is representing more or less that era for most of the people over here and he ist still well known ....and he was part of the "circus" as Braun's mec as stated by Mick. The 350 SMZ is a little bit of mystery, because I don't know why they digged it out in '75 again and ran it in the 350 cc class. As you know, it was quite promising in '72, making a fine debut at the 250 German GP, where Braun gained 2nd place ahead of Saarinen, but after that they ran into a lot a minor teething troubles and abandoned the project at the end of the season, at least for the GPs ( I remember faintly that Mang rode it in the junior championship in Germany though ). Quite interesting that is was quite competitive in the 350 class 3 years later on such a fast track as the Salzburgring is ( or at least was)

In '72 didn't Dieter run a home-built watercooled 250 in the GPs? I think it may have been a sleeved-down 350A as the customer TZ 250 wasn't available until the following year.

I well remember him on the SMZ in '72 at the Nürburgring and I'm quite sure he finished the season with that bike. He changed to a Yamaha the following worldchampionship winning year of course. In '72 there were no watercooled TZs available, air cooled TD3/TR3 were state of the art IIRC

It is in 1973 that Dieter rode a home-built watercooled 250 Yamaha ( and won the world championship with it ) and the bike, as Mick wrote, was based on a re-sleeved 350TZA engine - the production watercooled TZ indeed only came out in 350 size in 1973 , the 250 version was produced only the following year.

This quite trustable site tells that the 250 came out in June 73...

wave.gif Sorry Renn, my mistake on the year of course, the year of the first production watercooled TZ350A was '72 and the first TZ250 was '73, I'm quoting from memory, ah, how the years fly by.... confused.gif confused.gif cat.gif

It was in Jarno's championship winning year that Dieter ran his 'home brewed' watercooled 250 ('72)

I hate to seem to fight against evidence, but I think the topic needs to be investigated deeper....I'm fairly sure (from memory, of course....) that the 350TZ indeed came out in large numbers very early in 1973 ( so that all riders were equipped for Daytona for instance ) but that the 250 Grand Prix season started with all riders (except of course factory riders Saarinen and Kanaya) aboard air-cooled TD3's , or former "factory" watercooled bikes from the previous years in various importers teams ( for instance Patrick Pons had an "ex-Gould" -I think- watercooled 250 for Sonauto ) , or home-brewed specials like Braun ( who had ridden the SMZ in the previous season ) . If the 250TZ came out later in the season ( June ? ) that might have been in Asia or the US , but most european riders would have already been equipped for the season I think.

Anyway, there are people much more qualified than me on this forum to answer this clue , Don from the US for instance, but I think the matter is worth investigating.

Tom Newall is on the Raceway, a 500 cc twin two stroke. It could be Chris Curtis, right leathers and bike but I don't recognise the hat.

We were at the home of Graham and Roz Godward yesterday for their 25th wedding anniversary. A group of us that had not been together for 23 years but for 19 years previous to that were as thick as thieves (quote only, thieves were never that thick!!!!!!!!). We had loads to reminisce about, of course.
The group photo was taken and as soon as I have it I will post it, so beware and tuck the kids up in bed.

I have introduced then all to the web site.
